Duas Torres: I'm going back!
from DublinGulliver
The hotel is of a previous era and looks it's age being surrounded by the latest resort hotels and aparthotels. But don't let that put you off. The Duas Torres has an advantage that the latest resorts don't- unbeatable price for exceptional views! The hotel is built on the cliff edge and it's wonderful to look down at the view that awaits you on the breakfast terrace, at the pool and if your lucky enough to get accommodation with a 'sea view'! It's spotlessly clean and the staff were extremely accommodating. Our accommodation was plenty for two people. The kitchenette was basic- you may want to bring washing-up liquid and pot scrubers with you or buy them in the supermarket as there was none provided. (They provided tea-towels though!) However, we didn't use it much except to make coffee/tea. The only downside was that our air conditioning system broke down and when it did work was a little noisy. But it was a problem that I'm sure is easily fixed. Bear in mind that it is an older hotel and is without all the mod-cons and decor that you may associate with more recently built hotels. The hotel is 3.5k from Funchal centre itself, so if you don't fancy the walk, take advantage of the hotel bus. There's a timetable at the reception desk. The hotel is just a two minute walk to access the newly build Promonade (a cliff walk, which is a must) and the Madeira Forum which is just across the road. The Madeira Forum is built for the tourists (but the locals take advantage of too) and is a large shopping centre which has lots of clothes shops, restaurants (this is why you won't use the kitchenette in your apartment), cinema and supermarket. Enjoy it, we did!
