Nice, but not worth the price
Stayed here for 1 night in January on business. York House appealed to me because it is fairly small, its not a standard business hotel, and therefore it is more intimate place to stay. It lived up to these expectations, and the Courtyard mentioned in the other reviews is lovely. The rooms are clean and have everything you need. Bathrooms are lovely and modern, with great showers! Only downside on the decor front is that they do feel a little 'made by Ikea' and lack a little something to make them feel more luxurious. Tried the... more
Fabulous - A Hidden Gem
What a lovely place. I was a little worried when the taxi pulled up outside an anonymous doorway in a quiet backstreet, especially as the taxi driver didn't know the hotel and we had to show him the address written down. However, the uniformed doorman was at the car door in a moment to welcome us. We left our luggage with him in the small lobby and made our way up the magical stairway. As other reviewers have mentioned, there are a lot of stairs and they aren't very even so not a good choice if you have any trouble walking. That said,... more
Nice
We had two nights in Lisbon and wanted a nice room. We got it and it was 170 euros a night. Bathroom was outstanding with all of the traveler's needs. Friendly front desk staff, but restaurant staff left us disgruntled. The climb is not for handicapped and there is no elevator. We faced the street above the lobby at the top of the stairs and it was unbearably noisy from the drunken revelers below. Request a room away from the street if you want to get any sleep at all. They kept us up until 4am every night. Breakfast was good for 15... more
How very quaint
Enjoyed a 3 night stay at the York House in June 2007 . Very calming, quaint small hotel on the outskirts of Lisbon. Service and staff were friendly. Didnt sample the evening menu but Breakfast worked out about £10 each, good selection to choose from. Hotel doesnt look much on the drive from the airport and literally looks like just a door so could quite easily be missed driving past. The only downside to the hotel I feel is the location, a good 25 minute walk to the shopping area and everything had to be done in taxi. If you're not... more
Wonderful staff and lovely hotel
This is a beautiful hotel with a lot of character-lovely garden to sit in and great food and wine. But what sets it apart is the staff.I fell on the street and thought I had broken my wrist. The Manager of the hotel insisted on accompanying me to hospital and stayed with me to translate and make sure I was looked after.I cant thank him enough.
What a treat!
We felt like being at home in an amazing environment, specially taking into account that we were pretty much in the city centre. Beautiful garden, great amenities and the staff is second to none: very helpful and friendly. The room was spacious with classy decoration. We will be back!
What a lovely place. Very Romantic
We just came back from a few days in sunny Lisbon. York House is a charming little "boutique hotel", very well located in the center of the old town and right in the middle between Alfama and Bairro Alto, two of the most lively and interesting neighbourhoods. From the hotel, you can easily walk there or to the seafront. The metro station is 2 minutes from the hotel and trams also stop nearby, although Rossio train station is currently closed for refurbishment (so you must go a little farther to catch a train to Sintra or Cascais). The hotel... more
Yes, but
Yes, the entrance is a little difficult - 49 steps, but not all in one continuous flight - but it gives you exclusive access to the charming, shady courtyard of the hotel, where you can rest to catch your breath, and have meals and drinks during your stay. If you would find the entrance difficult, you would find many of Lisbon's streets difficult. Our room was on the street side (all rooms are well above the street level, thanks to those 49 steps) - yes, noisy if you open the windows (especially weekend nights), but very quiet if you... more
Enjoyed our stay but . . .
We had an enjoyable stay for 5 nights, the hotel isn't right in the centre but has good public transport links within a few minutes walk. There is a steep path from the street to the hotel entrance, which is in an attractive courtyard. This isn't made clear anywhere, someone with limited mobility would have problems. The porters were excellent and carried our heavy bags with enthusiasm and were appreciative of a €2 tip. Cleanliness was not up to scratch for a posted rate of €230 per night, although with advance booking that was €100 .... more
Don't go here if you are looking for a "SHERATON"
Travelers say they want charm and atmosphere in a hotel ! In Europe it is very easy to find and the York House is certainly full of these and more. One should not choose to stay in a 17th Century Convent and expect ALL of the amenities one would find in a superior grade major US city Hotel. It will never happen! ! We loved the York House and truly feel that it is our home in Lisbon. Wouldn't think of staying anywhere else in Lisbon. The staff were marvelous, personable, very helpful to us and made us feel like family. The food was... more
