Lisboa Plaza Hotel Reviews

Jun 2006, Mr A P Scougal

We first stayed in this hotel in 1997 whilst holidaying in the Algarve. We hired a car from Auto Jardim in Albufeira and drove from Carvoeiro to Lisbon in about four hours plus. The main highway from the Algarve to Lisbon is a race track, not for the faint hearted, be... more

Quiet Affordable Elegance
My wife and I stayed two nights in mid-March in this boutique style hotel which were close to perfect. Travelling to Lisbon often on business, we've tried most of the hotels in this class at one time or another and the Lisboa Plaza is tops. The staff is professional & proficient, especially the barman, perhaps the first in Portugal who could make whip up a real American-style martini; the public rooms are elegant with damask rose ambiance; the breakfast buffet appetizingly top notch. The bedrooms are small, as is typical for Lisboa, but well decorated and comfy. There are two free internet computers just off the lobby but no wi-fi. We didn't use the hotel restaurant as two of our favorites, Quebra Mar & Ribadouro, are just around the corner. The location is perfect, two minutes to a metro stop, a ten minute walk to the Rossio center of town. The Lisboa Plaza offers excellent value -superb service - we'll stay again.
Excellent choice
We stayed at Lisboa Plaza Hotel for 4 nights and really enjoyed all of it. First noticable surprise is that the taxi ride from Lisbon aiport to the center of the city, where the hotel is located, is less than 10 euros ! Warm welcome from everyone and a glass of port offered upon arrival. Our room was of good size and well decorated. It included a large bed, a sofa, a desk and plenty of cupboards plus a (tiny) safe. Bathroom was perfectly clean. All staff members (cleaning, restaurant, bar, reception, door) were really helpful and nice. The recommandations from the reception/concierge for all kinds of restaurants were perfect. Beakfast buffet was good but not exceptionnal. We had diner at the hotel restaurant (buffet or menu) one night and the buffet was excellent and not expensive given Lisbon standards. Finally, a very good point is the location of the hotel, a walking distance (i.e., around 5 minutes) from the very center of the city while in a very quiet street just along the best upscacle shopping avenue in Lisbon (Zegna, Gant, Vuitton, Boss, etc, are right across the street from the hotel). Conclusion : excellent location and staff ; good room, restaurant, and bar. A place I would recommend and happily choose again.
Treated well at Lisboa Plaza
My wife and I ended up in Lisbon quite unexpectedly. She works for the airlines and we travel stand-by so our plans are often changed at the last minute. Our original intention was to fly to Barcelona, but the flights were oversold and we changed our plans at the last minute to fly to Lisbon. That being said, we arrived at Lisbon airport with no hotel arrangement or knowledge of the city. We secured the Lisboa Plaza from the Tourist Information booth at the airport and took the room “sight unseen”. We were very happy with the outcome. The lobby is gorgeous and the desk clerks were extremely helpful. The room was clean, large and very modern for such a historic hotel. The breakfast buffet was very large and the service was excellent. The only down side was that the bar was a bit pricey, but that can be expected at most hotel bars. I had to laugh at the previous comment as to being far from the shopping and finding a better deal at the Regency Chiado Hotel. The Chiado is approximately 100 Euros more per night . It had better be awfully nice at those numbers. The location of the Lisboa Plaza is fine if you are reasonably fit and like to walk in a city. The neighborhood is great for dining and shopping and gives the tourist a chance to explore real Lisbon neighborhoods. We even had a chance to listen to Angolan music in a cafe just a few blocks up the hill from the hotel. It was a magical evening.
Modern conveniences with nice touches from the past
My wife and I enjoyed our 2 nite stay here, as we enjoyed the city of Lisbon, after our two weeks in the Algarve region of Portugal. Very well kept older building, quaintly located on a quiet side adjunct road, just off the bustling, six lane Avda da Liberdade. Front desk check in was in English, along with my attempt at at least some Portugese...very friendly and professional...we were also able to buy city tour tickets at the front desk...the tour bus stopped right at the front door, and we strongly suggest taking this 3 -4 hour tour ( Belem waterfront, cathedrals, and especially, The Alfama District...what a marvelous ancient quarter of the city, with the famous blue and white Portugese tilework on every building corner)...in fact, you are greeted by some of that fascinating tilework in the small hotel elevator. Room was a comfortable mix of old and new...most excellent was the large (six feet tall) french -window...that opened wide!, with a great view of a park-like area and a very hilly residential area behind the hotel...what a great little slice of life we were able to witness while enjoying room service breakfast at that window. Speaking of room service, we had it twice; the breakfast and some incredible Gazpacho the next night...the really remarkable part of the room service though, was our server! She was a very petite woman in her middle sixties! carrying this huge tray! and boy, she couldn't wait to get out of the room!...now, please understand that my wife was right there in the room as well, so it wasn't like she was alone in the room with me...but, man! a terse Boa Tarde and then a quick "obrigato" (thank you), and, POOF, she was out that door! it was a crack up. The convenient location to the impressive Avda Liberdade meant we could easily stroll to the vast center median strip of the avenue, where we enjoyed a baguette sandwich lunch, with some excellent espressos con leche, right there inbetween all those lanes of traffic ( 3 lanes in each direction)...very imressive and civilized to have that green strip with restaurants right in the road...good experience, both at The Lisboa Plaza and Lisbon in general. .
Not Good
we were disapointed with this hotel as it was too far away from downtown Lisbon where all the shops (Rua Augusta) restaurants and nightlife were. When we returned to Lisbon at the end of our stay we decided to book into The Regency Chiado Hotel instead.Considering these two hotels were both classified as 4 star,The Regency Chiado was head and shoulders above The Plaza ( see review). The bedroom we had at the Plaza was tiny as was our bathroom. There are definitely better hotels to stay at in Lisbon.
good location
We were really impressed with this hotel. It was very central, big rooms, clean, modern, lovely staff and great air-conditioning. It seemed excellent value and we would definitely recommend it.
They should teach other hotels their wonderful hospitality
I cannot say enough good things about the staff of the Lisboa Plaza Hotel -- every single one of them that we came in contact over our 5 days there. Not only knowledgeable, but they were truly gracious and hospitable in every way -- above and beyond what we could ever expect. Their entire staff was exemplary. It would be wonderful if all hotels' staff could be like the staff here. In addition, the rates were good and the breakfasts were very good.
Would highly recommend the Plaza
Just spent 2 days at the Plaza and I'd highly recommend it. Check-in and check-out were fast, efficient and courteous. The staff all spoke English and were friendly and helpful. The hotel and the room were very clean. The location is excellent - an easy walk to downtown and the restaurant district. My room had all the needed amenities - in-room safe, toiletries, even a bathrobe. A coffee/tea maker would have been nice but if you're desparate before the breakfast hour, there is coffee and sweets available outside the restaurarant in the lobby. My one complaint, as noted by others, it that the bed was VERY hard and disrupted my sleep several times. However, all in all, a pleasant stay.
Very Satisfactory stay at the plaza
We stayed at the Lisboa Plaza for four nights and we were very happy with every aspect of the hotel. First off the price was reasonable €120/night. On arrival the receptionist was very welocming and helpful (we arrived very early but were still given a room). The lobby was spotless as was the stairs/bar/ common areas and most importantly the room. It is across the road from Metro stop Avenida which makes all the city very accessible. It is also a pleasant walk (about 10 mins) to the centre. We didnt eat there so i cant comment on the food but Lisbon has so many restaraunts that it would be a shame not to get out and about. This hotel was clean, the rooms were big, the staff were friendly and helpful, the location is excellent and i will stay there again, no problem at all.
It's like returing home
When you arrive at the Hotel Lisboa Plaza you are greeted at the door by friendly and curteous people. It is one of the most cordial and unique places that we stay. We travel frequently, but find ourselves drawn back to Portugal, and of course, Hotel Lisboa Plaza. We have made friends there and I would, and do, recommend it to everyone. The staff is most efficient and always have smiles. You can walk to many attracitons, restaurants, musems, shopping, and subway and train stations. The Lounge and restaurant are wonderful, and we are always glad to stop for a glass of Port, after a day of sight seeing and walking to the Baxia, or where ever our adventure has taken us.
