Holiday from Hell

Sep 2010, ahhhhhh

We had a few giggles on holiday, the best one being when we came home and found the literature for the holiday and re-read it. If only!!!!!!!
I am not generally one to moan about hotels I’ve stayed at and, yes, this was £2,300 for four of us for two weeks, but to be honest, I’d have rather put more money in and had a holiday, or stayed home and saved for next year – we were shattered when we got home mainly because we couldn’t sleep, people being noisy late at night (not their fault, they are on holiday), but you have to sleep with the patio doors open to try to get even a little bit of air as it is sooo hot and there is no air con.
Even having a few of the all-inclusive alcoholic drinks didn’t make you sleep any better because, apart from the wine (okay after your mouth has gone numb other than that it tastes rank) and the San Miguel (a bit of a strong taste for me, but the 13+ year olds seemed to get drunk on it), we are assuming that it is alcohol flavoured syrup. Reason being that me and my friend are real light weights when it comes to alcohol and after 4-5 big paper cups of half Malibu and half Coke, neither of us felt even slightly drunk. We went out to town one evening and bought a bottle of wine and after a couple of glasses each had a great night’s sleep. If you want a later drink you have to go into town, as they literally clear you away from the drinking areas at 12 midnight.
There was noise wherever you went – too many people crammed into a small space. I couldn’t even sleep on the sun beds (which I had to get up at silly o’clock to reserve because people were putting their towels out at 1am) as there was no shade. I know you shouldn’t reserve sun beds, but if you don’t you won’t get one until at least late afternoon! This problem exists because there are not enough sun beds for the amount of people staying at the hotel.
The three pools there are lovely, but again very crowded. The best time to get in is at 1pm when lots of people are going in for lunch. Problem with that is that there is only one Lifeguard on duty each day and they have their lunch break at that time and get no cover. Just hope your child doesn’t get hurt in the pool at that time.
Another thing with the pool are the wasps. Hundreds and hundreds of them. They hang around the drink dispensers, the sun beds and on the floor around the sun beds while drinking the drinks that have been spilt. My daughter got out of the pool and was coming back to her sun bed when she trod on one. The Lifeguard came over and is so used to people being stung, has a supply of cream to stop it hurting so badly. However, when my other daughter trod on one, the Lifeguard was at lunch and my wasp spray didn’t seem to do the trick, so she stayed in pain until the Lifeguard got back from lunch.
The problem is that there is a huge wasps nest by the Archery and apparently one other nearby, but they don’t know which are bees and which are wasps and they are not allowed to kill bees, (as rumour had it) the manager doesn’t like to spend out, so it doesn’t get sorted out.
The entertainment team worked really hard and long hours, but when they weren’t using the main hall (again too small for the amount of people at the hotel), it was locked. If it rains during the day, there is nothing else to do at that hotel, they only have 4 computers and you can’t get away from it in the main hall, because it’s locked.
The maids are brilliant, there every day and very polite, I only wish they wouldn’t put the clean towels in the bidet.
The restaurant is, again, too small for the amount of people in the hotel, and it takes 3-4 sittings to feed everyone. If you get there early, you are queuing, if you get there mid way through, you have to walk round and round trying to find a table, there were 8 of us, so that was quite difficult, but eventually you find one, you may have to clear it yourself, but at least you eat. If you get in there later, again you have to find a table, but bang on clearing up time, they clear away the food, regardless if there is a queue of people trying to get some food. The little chef looking guy with the white hat and moustache in the restaurant hates everybody, I used to smile at him just because I knew it annoyed him, but the rest of the staff were really nice.
I am a vegetarian and so I lived on chips and vegetables. All the pizza’s apart from the occasional one in the pizza restaurant (but you never know when it’s coming) have some sort of meat on them, so do the pastas, apart from the plain pasta which is laying in oil and just about everything else has meat in it. Salad is meat free, but the only edible bits for me were the tomatoes and the grated carrot. Breakfast is actually pretty good, I was the only one in our group who thought so though.
We went out for a meal in town to Little India, that was really nice, but the best meal was at the Venecia Restaurante – Pizzeria – Calas De Mallorca. Lovely food, fantastic service and good prices.
We did feel quite stressed on that holiday, mainly because of all the pushing and shoving you had to endure every day and the amount of people and noise everywhere. We think that people were so rude to oneanother, because they were feeling the same. We went for two weeks, three days would have been a better length of time spent there.
The only other thing I would say is that if you can find the third star on that hotel, you’re doing a better job than we did. Three Star, I don’t think so!!!!!!!!

myself, husband and son aged 4 went to Club Callas Romani for 1 wk in Aug 2010 and I can't belive half the reports on here about this hotel, It's fantastic for kids of ALL ages loads and load of fun and games all day and night and even games for the adults! The evening shows were brill and always got the holiday makers to join in-some of evening shows- Animal show, fire show, singing comps, Club Romani got talent and loads more. You help yourself to larger, wine, fizzy drinls, slush, water all day and night and even cocktails are in AI , the food was fine always some thing to eat, pasta, meat, chips, pizza and then spanish night, fresh fish, sunday roast night loads so people who say they had nowt to eat need to go more upper class and pay more for a different holiday because we paid £1222 and got what we paid for .Always cakes and icecream for the kids. Staff are great very friendly and the security are fab(lost my purse with £100 euro and safe key) they tracked it down and got it back for me (yes, every thing was there) pool area very clean and rooms are cleaned every day how ever they are small and basic ...but your only wanting to get washed and ready!could do with air con but hay ho.there is always a q for dinna and tea but it goes down in seconds. we have booked for next year but for 2 wks as we felt we didn't want to leave . A great family holiday. Caroline, Garry and Tyler Nicholson from Newcastle

Had a week here from 28/8/2010, the hotel was clean and tidy with great swimming pools. lovely views from the rear of the hotel of the local countryside. The reception staff were efficient and helpful but thats kind of where it stops unfortunatley. The room was clean, although it needed air con. No kettle for tea and coffee, but it had a full dinner set in the cupboard with no knives and forks! Why bother??? The all inclusive deal was ok for the ice cream and soft drinks for kids and the san miguel beer *(not for the kids, although some parents didnt mind their 13 year olds drinking it!!), but the food was very poor, never quite warm enough. Not a very good choice. Ok if chips are always on your regular menu! Wife is a vegetarian, had pasta twice a day for 5 days, on the sixth day they put meat in the pasta sauce!!! Luckily she likes chips!! Its cheap, and ok if you like to lay by the pool all day with bored kids. The town is small with not much going on. Hire a car or pay the extortionate excursion prices. Went on the very good local bus service to Caves of Drach and paid entrance fee there. saved over 150 euros on hotel price!!

Just returned after my 4th visit to Club Cala Romani

Just returned yesterday after my 4th visit to this hotel, and can honestly say,, even after some changes have been made (not all for the better)I will return again.
Lets start with the changes: Self service pool bar - really good idea, has cut down all the queing (not that it was ever bad, but now even better).
Snack Bar - This is now only bread, rolls, cheese ham & lots and lots of chocolate spread. Previously this included a range of hot foods and was much better. The microwave is still there, which seems pretty pointless now and I think could do with being replaced with a toaster. As a very fussy eater, and not always wanting to eat at restaurant times, this was not a welcome change.
Restaurant - No change here, and no compromise with food. Although a fussy eater, still plenty to choose from. Cannot understand anybody complaining about food!!
There is now a lack of staff, which was very noticeable (I guess the cut backs have affected everybody!!)and on the odd occassion did have to clear my own table, however, a 2 minute job, no hardship!! Staff work really hard and are always running about.
Pool Area - The best ever!! 3 pools all next to each other, so if you have children of different ages you can watch them all. All pools are walk in too, no stairs, great for young children. In previous years it was quite acceptable to arrive at the pool area around 7.30am and get sunbeds in the front row. However, this year, if you wanted a front row, towels had to be out by 5.30am!!!
Rooms - I have never booked a room in the main hotel as I have children, but have heard complaints over the years about how small they are. Cannot complain about the 1 bed appartments, you get 2 seperate rooms, fridge and seperate bathroom. All kept very clean. Huge balconies with 2 double patio doors. No air conditioning, which many people complain about but I can honestly say that this has never caused me any problems. After visiting many countries previuosly, I have never had air con anywhere except America. However, I have been told that this is something that they are considering for next year.
Entertainment - There are lots of activities going on all day, for kids and adults. There used to be music all day around the pool area, but unfortunately not this year. Entertainment every evening, but cannot really comment as I'm not an entertainment kind of person. Only went in once last year to see the hypnotist show but cant even comment on that as some how I got involved and slept through most of it!!! I was told it was very good though!!
All in all, this is a great value for money holiday, but it all depends on what you want out of your holiday.
I am amazed at what people complain about. This year I took the oppertunity to visit other neighbouring hotels, and will definitly say that none of them came close, especially for the surroundings!!
If you want table service, and expect 5*, then pay for it!!!

The worst thing is lineing up for your meals . The meals are good by the way . The staff are very nice . the beach is 15 mins walk away and very nice bay . most people would enjoy there stay at this hotel . We arrived at the Club Cala Romani on the 11th August with my wife and 2 children aged 15 and 12 yrs.
First impressions when entering the complex was it could do with a lick of paint and the room we were put in was a little outdated but huge, 2 rooms, 1 with fridge and cooker.
No aircon but keeping the 2 patio doors opened helped when sleeping of an evening. Pool area great and not overcrowded, clean. Sun loungers, still plenty at 8:00am, but best pool areas taken a little earlier. Food good with plenty of choice, no complaints, queing in the dining area reasonable.
Hotel staff we as English was OK. Loved the Self Service on Kids drinks at the bar and also the Sangria and lager. Only queued if you wanted spirits at the bar. Cocktail bar on the balcony by receiption brill, did kids coctails. In all we found Calas de Mallorca nice but expensive on public transport. Beware ! because of overcrowding on the buses and if you cannot get a bus back from Palma to the resort it will cost 70 Euros in a taxi. Booth in Calas de Mallorca opposite Samoa Hotel will do Aqualand cheaper than the hotel 10 Euros less.
All in all for the money we paid it was a good holiday.

Fantastic pool area
5 / 10
Aug 2010, Fam. Magnussen DK

The hotel is somewhat worn, but there are nice clean in most places.
No air-conditioned rooms.

Pool area is fantastic and there were sunbeds enough for everyone.

There were many families with children, and therefore some noise and bustle.
The staff was not very service-minded in our view.

The food was no culinary experience and it worked a little as if you just had to be fed and could not get time to sit to enjoy your food and relax.

There was not much life in the city itself, beyond the usual souvenir shops and there were not many opportunities to find some good restaurants or bars, especially after midnight.

The town itself is far from everything and it is absolutely necessary to rent a car to get anywhere. We travel quite safely back to Mallorca a second time, but it is somewhere else on the island.

I know this a budget all inclusive option so I will be as honest as I can. First the positive:
Pool is fabulous - safe and cleaned well every day. Great play areas for kids and lots of activities for them so if they are happy parents can relax.
Very multi national which is good for mixing but bad for the fact everything had to be repeated in 6 or more languages.
Food is fine for the price - not the horror story some reviewers say, plenty of choice - in 11 days we had: pork, lamb, veal, beef, turkey, fish, hamburgers, beef stew, Paella & Chilli ( you get 3 options at dinner and at least 2 at lunch). Fresh salad bar, pizza and pasta available every day on top of the other meat options. Always one fresh vegetable and 2 types of potato. It is a bit canteen and it is busy with queues but to be fair that depends on the gusts being sensible and spreading their demand. They rarely did and often started queuing 20 minutes before opening like starving idiots! Breakfast also, loads of pastries, fresh fruit, cereal, bacon ( pretty fatty), eggs, sausages ( mainly frankfurter style) beans, tomatoes, bread, rolls, and the European ham, cheese dried fruit etc as well. It is no more greasy than any other hotel we have ever stayed in. Bit misleading to call it a snack bar which implies a variety of different foods but it was just cheese, ham, bread etc. In short plenty of choice but it is not A La Carte because you do not pay A La Carte - little to moan about really.
Ok - having been fair the rough bits.
Rooms are very dated and cupboards damaged and jaded although well cleaned by hardworking staff. Bathrooms are fine. BUT it simply is not acceptable not to have air con 3 star or not. I have stayed 3 start many times in Majorca and they have all had air con.Fans are available to rent but hideous price and what a cheek - at least supply them freeif you are not going to invest in updating! I got the impression that the poorer rooms were reserved for English guests whereas others for the better rooms and views ( we overlooked the flat concrete roof of the restaurant and that's it!)It was likely that they are biased towards other nationalities and perceive English guests as less than equal.
Reception staff bloody awful, slow, rude and totally without any concept of customer care ( with the exception of the English guy I have to say who was great). They can easily take money during your night time arrivals but apparantly cannot refund your deposits if you leave before 8.00 a.m. or after 11.00 p.m. These rules are printed on the BACK of the deposit slip and were jabbed at by a finger when I asked! Nice moneyspinner.
Entertainment - oh dear that is not an appropriate title. Mini disco for kids is great - after that forget it. It's like a 1970's Butlin's camp - outdated and awful except for the single evening of professional entertainment by the Kenya Boys which was great. Unfortunately the poor apartments and rooms mean that you don't really want to return there either. All that meant we were in bed by 9.30 some nights unless we wanted to go into town and spend money on drinks and entertainment which we could not afford ( hence booking all inclusive). Still the 9.30 start meant that we could get up by 6.15 ( necessary if you wanted half decent spots for sunbeds with some shelter for the children). By the time we left many beds were being bagged by 5.30 a.m.!
There you have it - an honest review. It is satisfactory ( just) for the budget we paid but only because the pool area and kids are well catered for and the food is OK. If you book it knowing this then you can't really complain!

Fab Relaxing Holiday

We have just come back from 9 nights stay at this hotel. There were seven of us from the age of 17 to 62 what a fantastic time we had! Plenty for everyone to do.
The Hotel is very clean, the rooms where cleaned everyday and clean towels where supplied daily. Very friendly staff throughout the complex they worked very hard and it never bothered them still giving service with a smile and having a crack with the teenagers!
Lotsa drinks to choose from beer, spirits, cocktails, slush and pop, water is also supplied in the all inclusive and daily ice-cream if wanted just ask at the bar. We never found any problems with queuing for drinks, there is a self service bar and we thought this was brill.
Entertainment was inside, and some people say there no air con in there, there is air con but not very powerful. We watched the entertainment some nights but found it was more for the little ones but there is another bar in the main hotel you can go to with music playing, which you can sit indoors or outdoors, Juan Martinez funny man!
Lots of different food to choose from, does get repetitive, but doesn’t it in any all inclusive holiday!
They only things we found that let this hotel down was the queuing at meal times, you can work around this like we did, we went for a late breakfast and late dinner and late tea so there was no queuing. Maybe if there was more staff on the restaurant floor cleaning the tables after people had eaten there would be less queuing outside, 9/10 we went into the restaurant and cleaned the dirty dishes off the table what the previous people had left, and put a clean table cloth on, we didn’t mind as we are all adults but the ones with little ones was a bit of a struggle for them. So please Cala Romani get some more staff on the restaurant floor!
The rooms do not have air-con but we found it ok sleeping with the patio doors open.
All in all we all had a pleasant stay at this hotel and found it was a Beautiful relaxing location.

Just returned from a 10 day holiday 5 of us (3 kids, 10, 7 and 5 yrs). Had a great time. Pool was fab, very clean and loads of sun beds. Cleaners excellent and very polite. Bar staff good. Reception staff excellent. Rooms basic, could do with air con although you can hire fans - you need them!!!! Entertainment at night, ok but kids loved it, the staff really try and work very hard. Would def go back. Last couple of days getting a bit busy, you had to queue to get in to restaurant and found it hard to get a table for 5. Pizza bar at lunch time was good. Food a bit boring, but always something you can eat, chips, pasta, salad, fish, meat of some kind.
