We booked 2 weeks self catering in a studio appartment 5th Oct 08. It's a great base for exploring the surrounding area but you really do need a car to get the best out of it. Lovely location halfway between Polis (town 2km) & Latchi (fishing village 2km) you can walk to... more

Akamanthea village is situated in the quiet area of Cyprus. Fantastic swimming pool and great staff. The brochure describes exactly what you will find - unless it is in black and white Olympic holidays disown knowledge. Self catering means no cooking, not enough for the... more

A very relaxing, peaceful place, the Akamanthea Holiday Village is very good with nice views of surrounding countryside, excellent facilities and friendly staff, we could not fault it. Situated between the towns of Polis and Lachi in northwest Cyprus. Both towns have nice... more

Firstly, what a fantastic part of Cyprus! I wasn’t sure what to expect because I had booked it four weeks before going on a late deal. I couldn’t have picked a better place. The hotel we stayed at was only in its third season and it was lovely. We stayed self catering... more

Good base, but......
We booked this resort via KLR Resorts - a timeshare having got a free week in April 2007. Heavily touted as a "luxury" studio, it had air con, cooker, fridge/freezer, toaster, washer, dishwasher and a plasma tv. Anyway, we were given a downstairs, twin bedded room at first (131). When i reminded the girl that we had booked an upstairs double, she said she could not re-allocate rooms. She called Sandra and as she was not available, we waited, suitcases and all, at the pool bar. Not even a complimentary drink was offered! Waited an hour and was given an upstairs (218), but no double was available until later in the week. Worth mentioning that this property does not have many doubles as such! We sort of unpacked, due to the fact we were going to move. First proper day was 21st August and we were told that we had to stay for 3 days until the Saturday to move, not ideal. We had lots of ants in this room, the sky tv was not set up and the cleaning really did leave something to be desired. We moved on the Saturday and this room was spot on (210). Cleaning was not good to start with, but a word with Sandra soon sorted that out. Beatiful sea view from the balcony, but it's a pity my wife and i caught a couple "playing around" below us. You saw everything the guy had. Reception were informed and the couple left of their own accord sharpish. Just as well as this is a family place. After this, we started to enjoy the holiday, although it's fair to say that after talking to people, lots had cleaning issues or had been given the wrong room type. It would appear we got the best room type, so don't book a basic room! Peak time and plenty of shade & beds were available most of the day. Pool is ok, and food at the pool bar is fine, although if you want breakfast, you need to be down early to avoid bullet beans. A car is a must for here and Polis in the square is the best to eat . Savvas Cafe is good, Chix Chox very nice, but a little pricecy, Finakas was ok, but devoid of atmosphere. The best place is Moustakallis Restaurant. Very good indeed. I actually went to Latchi harbour to eat once and asked for fresh prawns and was given frozen ones- you can tell. I mentioned this the the owner of the Moustakallis Restaurant and he actually went and bought fresh jumbo prawns especiallly for me!! Excellent food and service with reasonable prices too. Overall, a very nice place to stay and reminds me of Paphos years ago. Nice for couples and families and the Akamanthea is a good base, but someone with a bit of vision could really make this a top notch place. Says it's 4 star, but it's a 3 at best.
Akamanthea
We have just come back from a 2 week stay at the Akamanthea in Prodromi. I was travelling with my partner and our 2 children aged 8 and 4. We arrived on schedule from Manchester and we travelled up to the Akamanthea by small bus that took approximately 90 minutes to arrive, this was ok though as it gave us chance to have a look at the beautiful scenery. When we arrived at the Akamanthea we were quickly greeted by a very friendly receptionist who took all our details and personally showed us to our room (138), once we had put down our bags the lady explained that Olympic guests were not provided with air conditioning but we could rent it at 6 euros per day. Our apartment was on the ground floor and faced a garden area that was large and well maintained. The room was basic but clean with a large double balcony, we had to hire a kettle, toaster and hairdryer as these were not provided even though the brochure said they were. We had a TV that had on BBC 1, ITV and Channel 4 but no DVD player. The on site mini market does not really exist - there is a small room which had a selection of drinks in, which you had to ask the receptionist to open and anything you bought would be charged to your room, the nearest 'kiosk' was about a 10 minute walk away. As the weeks wore on the standard of the cleaners slipped, but a quiet word to reception and all was sorted. The apartments were not 4 star standard, nearer 3, the pull out bed was broken and the rooms were pretty shabby. The pool area was a good size but because the Akamanthea is not near a beach it could get pretty busy, pretty quickly and sunbeds were not always available after 11.00am, the staff at the pool bar struggled to cope most days and service was lax but they were quite friendly. The menu choices were very limited but again you could charge to your room and settle the bill upon departure. The evening dinner menu had to be booked in advance for any of the special event evenings, again limited menu and friendly but slow staff. There was a small play area for children with swings and a see saw also a childrens play room which had to be opened by the reception staff and you signed in and out of. Even though we travelled in the school holidays it wasn't overrun with children or teenagers, more older people and couples. The small town of Polis was lovely it had 5 or 6 good sized restaurants, a handful of shops and and 2 or 3 bars. My favourite was Chix Chox where the waiters were very good and child friendly, the average cost of a 3 course meal for 2 adults and 2 children with wine was about 80 Euros. The harbour area of Latchi was the same, maybe 5 or 6 restaurants, shops, supermarkets and bars and about the same price. I would not recommend staying at the Akamanthea unless you have a car, as you are unable to get anywhere unless you take a 15 or 20 minute walk and not all streets are lit at night so could prove pretty hazardous. The weather was beautiful, the scenery fantastic and the local people very friendly. I would recommend this part of Cyprus to anybody who prefers a laid back, typically cypriot holiday. It is very uncommercialised and unspoilt. We travelled by car to the Troodos mountains and to the Kykkos monastary, both are really worth a visit as is the Waterpark in Paphos. I would go again to the Akamanthea. My only criticism's are the on site mini market not being available at all and the standard of the rooms.
Not set up for self-catering
We booked a late deal for a week for 2 adults with Olympic Holidays through our local First Choice travel agent. I had looked at the resort on Google earth before hand luckily which prepared me for how rural and out of the way the accommodation was. Unfortunately we had a major delay at Gatwick due to an engine problem literally just before we took off and had to get off the plane and return to the departure lounge. By the time it was fixed and everyone was back on board, we were about 4 hours late. When we arrived at Paphos airport we were provided with a shared taxi transfer to the Akamanthea. With it now being the early hours of the morning, we were greeted by a somewhat grumpy english man on reception. Our room looked like it hadn't been cleaned before we arrived as the floor was thickly coated with dead ants and quite a number of live ones. Over the next few days we spent most of our time by the pool, there was plenty of sunbeds most days however there were a couple that were more busy so we decided to go to Latchi beach instead. The pool area is great, plenty of sun and shade (required with the 39c heat) and people were well behaved. The majority of other guests were couples or families with older children. As we were self catering, we ate lunch at the pool bar and made the trip to the local shop a couple of times during our stay. The shop is basically a glorified newsagent with little choice so we survived on bread, cheese, crisps and cereal. Almost all the food at the pool bar comes with chips. Nowhere really sold fruit or veg so the only healthy food was salad. The staff at the pool bar were generally friendly but very disorganised and couldnt cope with serving more than 2 or 3 tables at a time. The music was very repetitive and we found this very annoying especially hearing the dance mix of another brick in the wall every other song! The pool bar doubled up as the evening bar but the themed nights were nothing more than a different CD playing and the bar staff wearing a hat. The cyprus night was 10 euros to watch some traditional dancers but we had a perfect view from our ground floor room. The beach was a very long walk in the heat. We ran out of suncream on the second to last day so bought what we could from the local shop and managed to get very burnt as a result. The beach was near empty so very peaceful. latchi is a mix of corse sand and shingle. We generally didnt venure out of the hotel at night due to the location and not having a torch to find our way back. We regret not taking our driving licence as we were very limited to where we could go. They drive on the same side as the uk and road signs are in english and greek. The day before we left we were called by reception to say that they needed us to check out at 8.30 am rather than 12 and would move us to a courtesy room which we were not very happy about, but actually worked out well that we could make the most out of our last day. We then got a shared taxi back to the airport. More delays, the computers were down so they were manually writing boarding passes. Our flight was late but nothing was announced to say when we could expect it. We then had to wait for final passengers and arrived back in the uk 3 hours late. Overall we enjoyed the holiday, found it relaxing and loved the pool area. Great for those who like to loose themself in a good book.
Nice hotel/apartments but lacked friendly staff.....
Recently stayed at this hotel/apartments, having booked it at the last minute through Olympic Holidays. The holiday village was beautiful: reception nicely furnished, and apartments themselves were spacious, clean, big balconies etc. They have a small gym, tennis courts, indoor pool (which you needed to ask them to open if you wanted to use it). Grounds were immaculately kept and the pool is fabulous if rather cold. Breakfasts and lunches had a good selection (breakfast is CYP3). The only thing that let it down for me was the staff. They were generally British or Eastern European and were clearly there to do their allotted hours and didn't ever want to go the extra mile. For instance, the bar closed by midnight, you had to ask if you wanted the mini-market to be opened, bar staff on occasion appeared drunk. I read other reviews on Trip Advisor that there was a rude English woman but I would suggest that most staff were rude or uninterested with the possible exception of Lyn who worked in the dining room/bar. It is such a shame as the hotel would have given a higher rating if, perhaps, it was a family run business. The hotel charge CYP3 per person if you wanted to reserve a table in the bar during evenings when they had entertainment. Beaches in this area are very stony with dark sand and are not particularly attractive. However, rent a car and go to the Akamas peninsular or up towards the Turkish border and you will see spectactular scenery. Olympic use Hertz car rental which requires you to pay for a full tank of petrol (around CYP30) upfront even though the chances are you will only use around half a tank, therefore paying CYP15 over the odds for the petrol. A good choice for middle aged clients requiring late summer warmth without the liveliness of Paphos resorts.
Only if you want total peace and quite.
A very quite resort, mainly middle aged clientel. Great for the first 2/3 days to relax at the pool side. But can become boring if you want a bit more life at night! If self catering although advertised there is no on -site supermarket, it closed down!. Milk is available at reception. Nearest "kiosk" is a 10 min walk downhill, but 20 mins uphill back! Only very basic items, no bacon and eggs! Nearest supermarket in Polis. So not for anyone who has walking difficulty. Excellent chinese resteraunt, again 10 mins walk on fairly flat ground, but that's about it! On site food is fairly bland. An extra charge of £3.00cyp is made if entertainment is provided on site on some nights. If you want to use the sauna you have to give 1hr notice. Likewise indoor pool is locked, key at reception. On our stay the jaccuzi was out of action! Polis/Latchi are equal distance from resort which is very secluded. Taxi is £3.00 cyp to either town. Latchi consists only of 2 or 3 taverna fish resteraunts. Polis has a bit more to offer, can recommend 4u bar/cafe and the resteraunt opposite this. If you want a bit more life at night, Coral bay/Pathos (25km) is where to go as there is a lot more choice their. A taxi would be £25.00cyp e/way so much cheaper to hire a car. Local hire in polis was good value at £24.00cyp per day including a full tank of petrol and all damage waiver insurance. The resort itself was clean, but beds very hard! We had a "luxury" apartment but the sky t.v was offline, reception said it had been "cut off". Kettle/toaster at reception deposit £5.00 cyp. We had all this in appartment along will washing machine/dishwasher but no instruction manual!! Watch the bath/shower the bath was very slippery when showering as there is no grip on the bath base or shower mat provided! Can be dangerous particularly for the less mobile. Found the female English receptionist a bit rude on our check in, maybe she had a bad day! Lovely views of trudoss mountains and the sea from our appartment. Found the upstairs appartments aircon annoying at night, as the units for all 4 appartments in our block were attached to to the outside wall of our appartment, the other side of our bedroom wall!! Only go if you want total peace and quite and are happy to stay in close proximity to the complex.
Great location...but not 4 star
After reading reviews of the village on Tripadvisor we decided to book a last minute holiday there. My only real complaint was the apartment which were no way 4 star more like 2.Cupboard doors falling off, ants and very bland furniture.Overall the setting though was perfect for a get away holiday, great pool area. Our eating out experiances were a bit mixed. We went down into Latci horbour four times and the food was great, the Steak house was superb. The three nights we went to Polis, two of the nights were a bit poor. One of the resturants we had to leave as we waited over one hour and all we had was a starter. We were told to try Finikas and I had the beef kebab. When it arrived it looked like some party sausages wrapped in bacon covered in barbecue sauce,it was horrible!Anyway dont let that put you off,the place was busy, just dont try the kebab! I wouldnt go back to this complex, but I did like the area overall.
Would go back again
My husband and I stayed here, for the first two weeks in August. This is between Polis and Latchi. 2km in the middle. Both are within walking distance (about 30 mins), although it was far too hot to walk to either in the day. The walk to Latchi is safer as there is a path most of the way, to Polis it is by the side of the road and you have to go down a hill that never seems to end. Polis is the livelier of the two, Latchi is based on a harbour, so lots of fresh seafood! We thought eating out was good value for money, we never spent over £36 (english money) and that included starters, mains, sometimes a pudding and at least 2 drinks each. The apartments for us were great, fridge, 2 ring hob and tv! You have to pay for air con. We were self catering and cooked one basic meal in, wouldnt be able to do anything complicated, not enough room or equipment. I think the food in resort would be a little boring for one or two weeks, but it was ok for a couple of nights. The pool is lovely, very clean and bar is open all day up till midnight, most bar staff are great apart from one miserable woman, but she didnt put us off!! The reception staff were great, always on hand to help with any requests and the rep was OK. The apartments were cleaned every day apart from Sundays and towels and linen changed 3 times a week! We didnt stay in the apartment very much, but it was a great base and we would definately go back. We hired a car for a week, which I think is a must as this area is quite remote. The things we would change if we could would be Hire a car for the two weeks. Safety deposit boxes in room rather than in reception. the mini market open for a couple of hours every day (you have to ask reception to open it for you). Too be honest that would be about it.
Great Holiday in a lovely location!
We stayed in a one bedroom apartment for the week 2 adults and 2 kiddies. There were only 2 reviews but they seemed pretty good and so we went with an open mind! The Akamanthea Village is a lovely small resort set back from the sea half way between Polis and Latchi. The resort is beautifully maintained and very clean. The welcome we received from reception was excellent and efficient. The apartments are basic but comfortable. A/C was available at CYP£4 per day and well worth it. You could not have cooked a huge meal on the hob and the kitchen didn't have a toaster and some other essentials but that did not bother us as the local restaurants were excellent. Pool area / bar and grounds were lovely. Views amazing and restauarant for breakfast very good. Staff were very helpful except one miserable english women who everyone commented on. Dinner by Latchi harbour at night was lovely and you can walk there if not too hot along the sea front. Polis at night was also fab and we ate at FINIKAS resturant on two occasions. Overall we had a wonderful holiday. Great accomodation, lovely island, people and we will return. Don't expect the apartments to be anything too much and you won't be disappointed! We would recommend a car as there was only 1 Taverna and Chinese restuarnant within walking distance and the island has so much to offer - right hand drive!
Much better than we all thought!
If you are looking for a budget holiday in the sun then the Akamanthea is perfect. The photos on the website do not do it justice and we were all very suprised on how good the holiday village is - the apartments inside are basic but clean, the pool area and poolside bar are great, surrounded by well maintained lush gardens and the views from the pool and many of the apartments overlook the coast which is beautiful. The breakfasts are not great (very basic) so we ate our's in our self catering appartments, had cheap and tasty lunches at the pool bar and then wondered down to nearby Latchi for our evening meals. Latchi was quiet in October but there are pleanty of restaurants to choose from but they do tend to all have the same menu!! Latchi also has a fantastic watersports centre (latchiwatersportscentre.com) which can be found on the main and only road through Latchi - we all went jetskiing, parasailing, hired out a speed boat for the day, went on the banana boat and 'Great Big mable' which is not for the faint hearted!! All the staff are very friendly and I reccommend splashing out on any of the above activities! We are all planning on going back next year.
Lovely quiet location
Our family of four have just returned from Akamanthea where we stayed in two separate apartments for a week. Akamanthea is a lovely, friendly and well laid out holiday village. In our experience, the staff couldn't be more helpful. We checked in late and they opened up the shop for us so we could stock up on some water and other necessities. The beach is a short walk away and the views from Akamanthea are stunning. Both of our apartments had sea views and the sunsets in the evening were simply beautiful. Polis/Latchi are quiet, unspoilt areas so is an idea location for those seeking family or just a quiet holiday away from home. Taxis are cheap and the hotel will arrange them on request, however driving in Cyprus is fine. The apartments are what you would expect from a self catering facility. There were pans, glasses and cutlery available for us. It was a clean and tidy apartment with a small bathroom, living room, bedroom and balcony. At times when the complex is busy, it is possible to hear noises from adjoining apartments which can be a little disturbing. Furniture being shifted around and conversations between people can easily be heard. Luckily for us, it wasn't very busy. But apart from that, it was a lovely place to be and we are thoroughly glad we chose it.
