Swallow Dreadnought Hotel Reviews

Hello there and I am sorry to have to say that the Dreadnought in Callander has really gone down the drain in our opinion. We stayed for 2 nights, 8th & 9th June 2007. The room (number 101) was very small, the carpet looked liked it had not been cleaned for a long time. The... more

Very disappointing
Booked a double room for myself and my partner only to find on arrival that a twin room had been reserved for us!! Staff did not offer any solutions to rectify this situation or even an apology! Decor was pretty shabby throughout and room did not even have a telephone in it so had to walk back downstairs just to complain about the error!! No shower in room either. As for the lift... I have no idea how that passes health and safety law! Under no circumstances would I recommend this hotel.
The Dreadful Hotel
The most appalling and disgusting hotel we have ever had the misfortune to stay at. Fawlty Towers would look like a palace by comparison - we expected Basil to appear at any moment! The staff/management attitude was abysmal and customer service was disgraceful. The quality of food was acceptable, but was ruined by the inadequacy of service, for example the main course went cold while waiting 10 minutes for accompanying vegetables. The hotel suffered further from very drab furnishings and lack of efficiency in dealing with faults, including matters of health and safety. Why defects are not dealt with prior to the arrival of guests can only be left to conjecture. This awful hotel thoroughly spoilt our stay in Scotland and radical changes need to be made in the way it is managed to prevent an inevitable slide into oblivion.
laid-back staff
Stayed for father-inlaws 75th birthday. Rooms were clean but Hotel needs upgrading. Although the senior staff in restaurant were helpful there was a lot left to be desired, I left by toothbrush recharger behind and phoned 3 times for it to be returned to me and am still waiting, the reception staff need some sort of management to get them organised otherwise they were helpful and pleasant but a little laid back. Shan't be going back though.
Very good value
We had a great weekend at this hotel, we went for our anniversary, yes we were fully inclusive but putting that aside the room we got had a lovely view of the high street and the hills behind the hotel, on arrival we were greeted with a warm welcome, directed to our room which was a lovely room but more importantly it was spotless, bedding and towels were of a very good standard, on going down for our meal we were a bit concerned as we believe in you only get what you pay for, and this had not been an expensive weekend, but what a surprise, the dining room looked lovely and the food complimented the hotel greatly, good choice, good quality and good portions. all the staff were polite and helpful. As we had gone on a weekend when there was a big convention we had to eat in the Teith Room, which we had read reviews which indicated this was not good, but we were quite happy, the room was clean and nicely laid out. The only critisism we had was that the hotel could have been a bit warmer, but when we went down for dinner on the first night we asked for an extra heater for our room, and it was there within 20minutes. The entertainment was really good, i went to be with a sore face from laughing on our first night, and we never waited more than ten minutes at the bar and considering the hotel was full i thought that was really good going. Thank you everyone at the Dreadnought.
dreadnought hotel great relaxing break
we go to the hotel maybe once or twice a year and have always found the staff very helpful and courtious . Also we enjoy some of the entertainment thow we would like something a bit different now and again but on the whole we always enjoy ourselves. I think anyone who does not like this hotel is far too fusy we never have to book a room with a shower as all rooms are en suit
Managments don't care attitude
were not told you had to book a room with a shower in advance, there were dirty plates on the tables before anyone sat down to eat the bar ran out of lager only half an hour after it opened , the wait to get to the bar took so long that people were leaving to go to other pubs to get a drink. But most infuriating was the attitude of the managment who when anybody complained basicly gave I a don't care reply.
Abysmal
I have never stayed in worse hotel! The place stank of stale smoke, there was no shower in the room, I had to fight with the rude receptionist to get use of a room with a shower. The towels were so intoxicated with the smell of smoke I was nearly sick. I had to buy a candle burner and oil to try and mask the smell in the room. We were forced to wait 30 minutes in a queue to get a drink. We paid £35 per person per night B&B and had to pay for our drinks but the other half of the guests had been given the same price All Inclusive. On complaining about things the Management told me I'd just have to "deal with it". My partner and I were there as part of school reunion and Valantine's Day. It was the worst Valentine's Day of our lives. Half the guests from the reunion left in disgust after and hour and the band wouldn't go back on as everyone was stood in a queue to get drinks. The Management wouldn't even sanction table service to bring the guests back to the party we were paying them to service. Under no circumstances should you go to this hotel unless you are a glutten for punishment!! It is dreadful, terrible, crap, bad, aweful, failing, poor, abysmal and all those other words to sum that up!! I have written to the parent company to complain. Lyndsey Ross Dundee
The staff made our holiday
I am glad to say my first stay in scotland was a memorable one, a good memory. We stayed at the dreadnought hotel for 3 nights, and although the decor isn't the greatest i have no complaints about the quality of food and service. The staff were all very helpful and the bar girl constantly made myself and my husband smile. A well worth it stay in my books.
Heart of the Trossachs
I was very surprised to read the comments of a Tripadvisor user dated July 10. I have used the Dreadnought hotel in Callander and was most impressed with the hotel and the room we had which admittedly was on the front with a fine view. If your correspondent was so dissatisfied with her experience of the Dreadnought I suggest she voices her complaints with first the management and that with British Trust Hotels, the owners, who operate some fantastic hotels mainly in Scotland but some in England, many of which I have visited and found superb in value and service. In most you get a five course dinner and full English breakfast, if wished, at a very competitive price.
"Dreadful Hotel"
My husband and I had the misfortune of staying at this hotel. We paid extra for the room 'upgrade'. I dread to think what the standard rooms were like if this was the superior room. The room was dirty and had not been polished for some time. We even had to clean the TV before watching it. The food was absolutely awful. The night we arrived (Friday) the hotel had a dinner dance night so those of us not going to this were made to eat in an old room (probably an unused bedroom - not exactly the romantic break I had envisaged!! I was despeerate to go home the following day (and we had to pay to park the car) and I would NEVER return to this Dreadful (not Dreadnought) hotel again !!!!!
