Great under pressure
We visited the Gleneagle during the recent Irish Dance Championships - a time when the hotel was very busy with participants and their parents in a state of high excitement preparing for and taking part in teh competition. Despite what seemed like thousands of people running around, the staff of the hotel coped admirably - taking care of us in a very personal way and helping us to make the most out of our weekend stay. The hotel itself is a bit old and in need of redecoration, but for the price we paid, it was very good value.
Management response from GleneagleManagement

Firstly, we would like to thank this Trip Advisor Member for taking the time to provide us with such positive feedback and secondly for choosing to stay with us during the Irish Dancing Championships in February. We were, as always, proud to host the 2007 Championships. This was an incredibly busy week for everyone here in the hotel, as thousands of participants along with their parents and supporters passed through the hotel for the various competitive events. As this Member observed, here at the Gleneagle, we pride ourselves on the personal care and attention to detail we pay each individual visitor. The Gleneagle Hotel is indeed “a bit old” in fact this year we celebrate our 50th Birthday! Having originally started out as a 12 bedroom hotel in 1957, The Gleneagle Hotel today consists 250 bedrooms as well as extensive leisure facilities including a 25m swimming pool, gymnasium, squash and tennis courts, Pitch’n’Putt and much, much more! The legendary INEC (Ireland’s National Events Centre) also forms part of our all-inclusive complex. The INEC has hosted a diverse range of events, from the Irish Dancing Championships to the Harley Davidson European Rally as well as large corporate and association conferences. It has also played host to concerts with artists such as Van Morrison, Jose Cura and the Sugababes to name but a few. We constantly strive to refurbish and improve our décor, in fact we have a large maintenance team including, carpenters, electricians and painters employed year round to enable us to do so. Our bedrooms are currently undergoing a complete overhaul. This is an ongoing project with a further 48 rooms due for completion at the end of the summer. Thanks once again to this Member for their valuable feedback and we hope to welcome them back to The Gleneagle Hotel soon.

Honest impression
I stayed here recently for two nights for a conference. I agree with previous reviewers about the rambling nature of the hotel and the tired look. However, I found the room on the 4th floor to be quite comfortable, spacious and clean. No tea making facilities was a big disappointment. Apparently this is for health and safety reasons. If visiting bring your own kettle. I also experienced on both mornings a wait to be seated for breakfast, but expected this because of the numbers attending the conference and wanting breakfast at the... more
OK stay.
Stayed 3 nights at the Gleneagle. The hotel is very close to Killarney, you can walk to the town in 20 minutes - nice walk after dinner! The hotel itself caters to large tour groups. We ate in the hotel 3 times for dinner and the menus were pretty bland. During one breakfast, they most have been expecting a lot of people because the waitstaff was really rushing you though. It appears the hotel is going through renovations. Half of one hallway had keycards for the doors, the other half had regular door keys. If you go, don't eat dinner... more
Don't bother!
Not a nice place to stay, I am used to booking luxury hotels and my boyfriend had booked the Gleneagles as a treat as he heard it was fab and had a great reputation, so wrong! It looks like it hasn't been re-decorated since the 70's for a start, the carpets are old and smelly and the rooms aren't much better. There is no bar food served in the main bar, if you want food like light snacks etc you have to order it at reception (while people are waiting to check in!) The staff weren't the friendliest either, I think they are just going... more
Adequate, but would look elsewhere for next trip
When our travel agent could not confirm a reservation for us at another Killarney hotel, she was able to get rooms for us at the Gleneagle. So this wan't our first choice and I would look elsewhere if it return to Kilarney. The hotel looks fairly worn. Staff is always around cleaning but it doesn't help worn carpets, furniture, beds, decorations, etc. This is not a dive, but even it its best day this was not a posh hotel. Even though the room looked a bit worn, I slept like a rock the 2 nights we stayed. The front desk... more
