Connemara Gateway Hotel

I stayed in this hotel in August 2006, and whilst its not tip top luxury, it has a nice ambience. We got a room downstairs, and by all accounts, the upstairs rooms are a better option, as they overlook the gardens. The food in the restaurant was great, but the staff were a bit over zealous, flocking around like seagulls which certainly does not help you relax. Myself and my partner stayed in this hotel over halloween. We had asked for a family room for 2 adults and two children. The reception staff were very friendly but once in the room we realised it was not what we thought it would be. and the photographs on the website were very misleading. Dont know what hotel they showed! The wallpaper was peeling of the walls, the view over the "gardens" showed a bleak field and the decor was generally very old and run down. Staff were very friendly and efficient. However some of the rooms were very old fashioned and poor value for money (I think ground floor numbers 125-130 are older - we had 125 and 126). Old decor and old bathrooms looking nothing like what we saw on the website and with no view. It felt like the heating was just turned on before we arrived as we had a very cold first night before the room warmed up, although when we asked the staff quickly provided a separate heater for us to plug in. The bedrooms in this hotel need decorating. the carpet in our room was filthy. there was black mould round the bath/shower. There was also a very strong smell of blocked drains. On a positive note the meals and service in the dining room were excellent.

Hotel was average. Only complaint was that our room was a little worn and in need of a painting. Faucets in bathroom were corroded, exhaust fan did not work, and there were stains on the walls. Meals were very good.

I stayed here on March 29, 2004 with my group from Celtic Tours. The new management and staff made us all feel very much at home. Our meals were delicious and plentyful. After dinner we were entertained in their pub by a wonderful muscian who played his accordian. He was very versatile and played a wide variety of music for us. If ever I have the opportunity to return to Ireland, I would love to make this hotel my home base. Mick Nolan our driver/guide was right, he said we would love this hotel.

I stayed here with my Celtic Tours group in 3/04 and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The new management is so friendly and accomodating. They have hired a fabulous chef and of all the places we stayed in the seven day trip, I would love to go back here the most. The setting is very quiet and homey.
