Disappointed
We stayed here for one Sunday night as part of a touring around Scotland holiday and I was very disappointed with the standard of the hotel. The reception staff were very friendly and helpful on arrival and the room was very large but overlooked the back of the property and as such was already dark, but there were no voiles on the windows, just blinds which meant having the lights on in the middle of the day or being seen by the office block a few feet away. There is no mini bar in the room, just a 'tuck box' with a couple of bags of crisps... more
Great staff, great place !
We stayed at this hotel as part of a wedding that was taking place there. The staff couldn't be more helpfull ! Our rooms air con failed (You wouldn't think this mattered in Scotland but for once it was hot !) and they without fuss switch us to a new room. Reception staff were great and the bar tenders knew there stuff. Didn't try the famous restaurant as I kept going back to the Italian next store which was the best italian I've tried outside italy ! The hotel is beautiful and the lift is fantastic, rooms are very nice and I know some... more
Frustratingly almost okay
We stayed for one night as part of a family function, and while the place looks great, it wasn't the smooth, quality operation we were expecting. Definitely a matter of style (or aspiration) over substance. Good things: the fabulous lift (we didn't have the problem with the grille that other people mentioned), the great breakfast (both the buffet and the a la carte), some friendly staff, the location. Not so good things: Our first floor, bog-standard room was comfy enough, but small - not much space to put down/unpack bags.... more
Funky !
This hotel, which was featured on Globe Trekker, is in a building which used to be a Social Security office and I simply loved the feel that this gave to it, I could almost imagine the stone-faced civil servants still working here. The room was a top notch design, the DVD player and giant LCD screen TV being a welcome feature. A comfy bed and a toilet which looked like it used to the gents for the Social Security staff, fab ! The only complaint would be the air-con, which wasn't working too well, making the room quite hot and stuffy.<br... more
Could do better
Location – Right in he city centre. If you are ravelling in form the airport on the bus (good value at £3.50 as opposed to £23 in taxi) then get off at second stop – five-minute walk. From he rail station also around five minutes. The building – Fantastic 1800’s building – built as a gentlemen residence & then over the years has provided accommodation to various enterprises. Before Abode the education offices used the building. The abode renovation has been very good retaining most of the original features – the 1900’s... more
Don't book if you want a peaceful night's sleep ...
The only great thing about this hotel is the location which is extremely central however this advantage is also the hotels downfall. We were kept awake throughout most of the night by the goings on in the street below and then when all the club goers have finally gone home the traffic starts around 6am and the buses going up and down are extremely noisey. The room was ok but very basic for the £120+ price without breakfast. The old fashioned gate lift was never closed properly causing it to always be out of order. We... more
just the ticket
Stayed 26th to 28th Jan 2007. Staff friendly/efficient - refreshing, I find the smile a costly commodity these days in most hotels. Great location for everything we wanted. Glasgow remains a top notch city for shopping and a night out. Stayed in a "desirable" room which was small but since in city centre kinda expected it to be. It was what I wanted - clean, with a warm classy feel dans le centre ville. Highlights - bed and high ceilings (does it for me). Didn't try Michael Caine's - but met a couple in the funky Vibe bar who said food was... more
