We are a family of four (two boys 9 and 11) and were looking to ski on a budget in Tignes. We travelled by Snow Express coach direct from London Victoria to Tignes Les Brevieres.
We would highly recommend Chalet Chardons for anyone in this situation. Like any chalet, you need to be sociable. Be prepared to share a table at dinner and take a chance to chat about your day's ski-ing. The food is excellent and there is lots of it. The bar is small and friendly. A large beer is 4.5euro (3euro in happy hour). This is reasonable in comparison to other bars in Tignes.
There is free self-service tea and coffee available all day and afternoon home made biscuits, cakes or scones for when you come back from ski-ing. Packed lunches can be arranged the night before (5euro each) which save a fortune compared to eating in mountain restaurants each day.
The chalet staff are young and very helpful. They have a definite can-do attitude which is refreshing.
The romms and the upstairs decor is basic. However, we had a room for four (double and bunk beds) which was ideal for us with lots of storage space and a window overlooking the lake. It was warm and cleaned every day. Bathroom and toilet was ensuite with a normal-sized shower with lots of hot water.
The chalet is above/behind a ski shop which is handy if you have any problems with equipment.
The bottom of the pistes is about 200 metres away, down a slight hill through the village. There is a free drag (poma) lift which is about 400 metres long and ideal for beginners as you can get off where you want and progress further up to the top as you learn. It also means that beginners wont need to buy a lift pass for a couple of days at least, even with ski school. There is also a chair lift which takes you up to the village of Les Boisses from which there is a free ski bus to Tignes Le Lac and Val Claret. This chair lift is free for pedestrians or if you explain you are a beginner and want to ski on the beginners slopes in Le Lac or Val Claret (two free lifts in each). For anyone wishing to explore the Espace Killy, a gondola from Les Brevieres, then a chairlift takes you above Tignes Le Lac from which you can access the whole area.

  • Advice: Recommended for travelers on a budget wanting to ski in the best ski area in Europe.

Easily the cheapest deal in Tignes/Val D'isere

I've stayed at the Chardons many times as I ski several times each season. I find them very flexible which has allowed me to ski many long weekends. The accommodation and food is as described on the web site without any pretensions and the food is actually pretty good for the price paid. Location wise, yes it is in a smaller part of Tignes but I always find the quiet 'home' runs to be a great way to finish the day. Chuck in some bad weather and this is the best tree area in the whole of the Espace Killy. For me price is everything as I'm on limited budget. If you want a luxury chalet holiday then this is not for you and you'll pay through the nose for somewhere in Val D'isere. If like me, you are on a budget then I'm pretty certain that you won't find a better deal and if you factor in that you can arrive mid-week using cheap flights then you'll save a bundle. I've always found the staff to be friendly and sociable. It's an old building and sometimes things go wrong. Once reported, the staff just get on with fixing it. The tea time biscuits seriously suck so we always pick up some nibbles from the supermarket opposite and instantly acquire loads of new friends!

  • Advice: Unbeatable price and very flexible

Third year running

Have just booked up to go back to Chalet Chardons for the third year running.
Reasons Why:-
1.Espace Killy is an awesome ski area with one of Europes best snow records.
2.Chalet Chardons is 100m from the Sache Bubble Lift giving direct access to Tignes area.
3.Friendly staff that love boarding and skiing themselves.
4.Good wholesome breakfast and 3 course evening meal, a must if you are on the mountain all day.
5.Excellent prices mean more days boarding per season (you will not get cheaper in this area 2009/2010 prices I think from Er269 for a week, half board, including a 6 day lift pass)
6.Excellent transport links, direct bus from London (if on tight budget), 30-40mins transfer from Bourg St Maurice high speed train station (over night train means 2 extra days on slopes.
7.Full of people who are there to board and ski as a priority and not just pose (if want that go to Val up the valley and pay 5 times as much.
8.Own bar out the back (The Underground Bar) for party orientated folk.
9.Only place we have found in Tignes that can do mid week change overs and short stays, for when the powder falls and you can get just a couple of days off work.
So in summary if you are a proper boarder or skier who wants good value for money in one of the best ski areas in Europe with plenty of wholesome food, friendly staff, good atmosphere right next to a lift this is the place for you.

Tignes Les Brevieres is a fab village and its such a short walk to the lifts. The hotel was great for the money and the bar really is the cheapest I found in the whole week. Considering what I could have spent to stay in Val D'Isere I reckon I saved about a grand. Excellent stuff guys, I'll be back next year.

Not a place for the older fuddy duddies like your reviewer below. Very cheap (by far the cheapest in Tignes) with friendly down to earth staff and a party atmosphere. Rooms are basic but clean and mostly have en-suite or at least a bathroom in them. We had a great time. The only problem was getting up after too many vodka shots. village is great as is skiing. The company running the hotel have other chalets and apartments which are quieter for the less adventurous or older mob. Higly recommended if you want a cheap and fun ski or snowboard holiday... Can't fault it for the money we paid considering an average ski holiday is over a grand in March in both Tignes and Val d'Isere. We paid about a fifth of that and I can put up with a few drunken guests for that!!!

Basic, friendly place more akin to a backpackers and priced accordingly. The staff were without exception pleasant and easygoing. To Mr. Jones above-you get what you pay for and I'd suggest you go and stay somewhere for E1000 a week(or better still stay at home, save us all from your whining and leave the cheapies to those that might not be able to afford to ski otherwise).Spending money in places like Brev keeps it alive. It would be a shame to see it go upmarket and out of budget.I stayed in one of the long stay rooms which was a bit bigger but a bit messier than the others. I'd go there again as its cost means I can ski for twice as long and thats why I'm there. They are flexible with arrival/departure dates which allows you to make use of cheap midweek flights.

Feb 2008, Mr P Jones

I only gave this 1 as that is the lowest possible. This place is a total dump, the main building smells permanently of stale beer, ashtrays (even though you aren’t supposed to be smoking there are ashtrays in all rooms) and some other vomitous stink. The rooms were so shabby I wouldn't have stayed in one as a student (which appears to be the sales pitch though without the associated price). The ensuites are a joke - they don't have toilets (the actual toilets are pretty scuzzy affairs down the corridor with a door about 2 inches from the loo seat meaning you spend any seated time with your knees jammed against them) and the 'en suite' showers are self-contained plastic affairs that should be in the Guinness book of records for being the smallest ever created. Generally the finish was awful and also they cram you in. Food - started awfully (couldn't understand what the first meal was and the second was burnt/raw depending on the item selected and the tea and biscuits comes in the form of tea with a bowl of broken biscuit bits) but got better (5/10 maybe). Service - rubbish, no welcome despite our being a group of 15 plus we didn't have a room key for most of our first day as the 'manager' was snowboarding and others had to wait a day to move from a particularly stink infested hole. Location - pretty crap really - this part of Tignes has few bars/shops/restaurants and as a result it is hideously expensive (try 46E for 3 chips and 3 chocolates) also it takes ages to ski back everyday from the more interesting parts of Tignes - OK day one but soon loses the attraction. Overall, I cannot condemn the place enough - it's just a shame that the local council doesn't condemn it too then nobody else would have to spend time there (the analogy with a prison stay not being overstated). Oh and don't get taken in by the 'refurb' line - this was already underway when we arrived and all I can say is I hate to think what it was like before!when we arrived and all I can say is I hate to think what it was like before!

Management response from Kath Staniland, Resort Manager 08 Dec 2008

Having checked our detailed customer records this reviewer did not stay at Chalet Chardons. They stayed in another hotel in our resort. The booking was passed on by us as Chalet Chardons was full at this time. The comments made thus refer to another establishment and not our hotel. We're sorry if the reviewer found that aspects of this property outside our control such as cleaning and smoking policy did not meet our usual high standards and we are reviewing whether we will pass on any more bookings to them via our website. However this reviewer did not stay in Chalet Chardons during February 2008 and their comments refer to another establishment, even if the booking was passed on to them by us.

Very lively young chalet. Food pretty good. Tignes Les Brevieres is very pretty with easy ski-in/bubble access to the main resort Tignes Le lac. Gorgeous ski back via ex country roads. Ski Schools and hire all based in the village.
Would definitely recommend. Saves a lot of money staying away from the main resort, but with easy access.
