Slightly lower than average
from Hector8
The location is very good. Other than that there is nothing spectacular. Clean towels are not white even though they are supposed to be (became gray in time) and was when they were made. So; If you want a good location (close to restaurants, bars, nightlife), and if you do not pay much, this hotel is an option. But, of course, if you want to pay more, there are more options.. 2 out of 5 is a fair score for this hotel.
better then expected

IF YOU'RE CONSIDERING STAYING AT THE ALEXANDRA HOTEL - DON'T DO IT! Its not bad as far cleanliness, nice people, food are concerned...the problem is that the hotel is a family-run business, where the receptionists Alexandra, Romina (sisters) have a nice little scam going with the rest of the local businesses. We're experienced travellers, and are quite good at spotting rip-offs, but they are so good at what they do - it's almost scary. We got charged an extra $250 on our credit card - just b/c we stayed an extra 4 nites, and they took advantage by charging us twice for it (the first time i paid in full - the second time, when my husband went to pay for "extra" room service charges - and they put thru the 4 extra nites AGAIN!). We needed laundry done badly - so we got "express" service, it took 2 days to get and they charged us a whopping 92 ML (which is almost $400 cdn) - which they don't tell you until you have to get your clothes back from them!!! A poor german man got a real zinger, when he was told (again at Checkout time) that he owed them $700 DM in long distance bills - he would have to be on teh phone 24/7 for that - what horrible thieves!!! He simply said he didn't have to the money - and they made him sign a "promisary" note to pay when he got to Germany. Another german family also got lost in "paperwork" when they paid 10 days upfront, and then couldn't produce a receipt to prove it - when asked to pay AGAIN at checkout!!!! even small things like their "internet" service - they'll try and get extra money from you - selling you a used ticket for 2 hrs - when really it works for only 20 or 30 minutes - and "oh, they can't seem to get thru to the computer people who own the computers" to get you a refund of measly 2ML or at least, let you get on w/out a ticket. BE CAREFUL!!!! AND KEEP ALL RECEIPTS!!!
Not bad at all, good value for the price

Didn't know what to expect after all the bad reviews but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. OK it is a bit tatty but you really have to take into account that it's pretty cheap to stay here. The staff were very friendly and rooms were cleaned every morning. Breakfast isn't to be recommended although, judging from how busy the restaurant was, most people found it tolerable. Personally I went to a cafe round the corner and paid a whopping £2 for brekkie, no real hardship. The bar was lively later at night with a cross-section of age groups and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and I didn't see any evidence of excessive noise coming from the pool area.
Liked our stay here!

The hotel was very nice, rooms were ok, they clean it every day if you'd like to. The people who work here are very friendly and speak good english, nice atmosphere! The breakfast is nice, plenty of choice and the dinner is good as well if you eat here. Its in the middle of all the shops, bars etc, so there is much to do nearby. I really enjoyed staying here and hope to come back here sometime.
Don't waste your hard earned money
from ANOtherHolidayMaker
Don't waste your hard earned money. For 3 star hotel, read student accommodation and nothing else. I have never walked out of a hotel because of the noise and the sub standard accommodation, but we did after 4 days. It was unbearable. There was so many students staying their - partying all night and the management did not care. The bathrooms and bedrooms were definitely not 3 star quality with damp patches, broken showers and dirty sheets. The breakfast was appauling - little choice of children quality cereals, something which resembled egg, greasy bacon and cold coffee if the drinks machine hadn't packed up. The upstairs pool looked well beyond its due clean. If you stay, make sure you do not look over the lower pool area as the noise is horrendous at night. Doors banging, shouting, 24 hour football on the tv downstairs. I can't imagine any older people wanting to stay here! As I said, we did move out and enjoyed the rest of our holiday at another much better run hotel down the road.
Such bad reviews unjustified !!!

I don't think I have ever been quite so worried about staying at a hotel as I was prior to my stay at the Alexandra. I, along with quite a surprising number of travellers checked the reviews for the hotel only after booking my stay. After reading through many of the "Terrible, do not stay here !" reviews I came close to the verge of cancelling. First impressions of the Hotel on arrival were good, I am very much of the "you get what you pay for" ilk so was not expecting 5 star luxury. Any building work/improvements mentioned in earlier reviews had been completed and there was no sign of disruption or dust. Although the bathrooms are a little dated, the standard of cleanliness in the rooms was very high. Thinking of ourselves as a bit of the eco-traveller, we would only place our towels on the floor when we would like them changed. The cleaning team at the Alexandra unfortunatley didn't seem to be quite as eco-minded and insisted on changing them every day regardless of where they were left. Not so great for the environment but it did mean fresh towels after every shower ! The beds at the Alexandra can be quite hard and at times a little uncomfortable. I found that taking one of the duvets from the wardrobe and placing that on the bed made all the difference and was perfectly acceptable On one occasion we were woken to at 3am due to noise however I firmly place the emphasis on the inconsideration of other guests staying at the hotel that night rather than the hotel itself. Breakfast at the Alexandra wasn't the finest of cuisine but was certainly satisfactory for what I classed as a "freebe" added to the to good value accomodation. The staff at the hotel are very friendly and exceptionally helpful with a great deal of knowledge. I think one of the maltese islands greatest charms are the warmth of their people and this is certainly true of the reception staff at the Alexandra Hotel. I would and certainly will stay at the Alexandra again in future. There will be people who prefer more creature comforts when staying away from home and to those I would remind everything comes at a price. If however, you are looking for a base to explore Malta and want good value for money then I recommend you give the Alexandra a look-in.
Ohh dear where do I start

Where do i start. The hotel had ongoing building works which I had not been told about. There was dust and dirt in the lifts which stuck to your shoes and then trod into the carpet. The noise at night and early morning was unbearable as was the noise from my neighbours who came back from clubbing at 3am every morning and then decided to bonk all night. In the morning I went to breakfast late as i had arrived at 1am that morning, only to find most of the food gone and what was left was stone cold, also they have a habit of herding the guests at one end of the resteaurant Then on the Wednesday about 9.30 hoards of pensioners came in to play bingo! they were noisy and very disruptive. Most of the guests then left there b/fast and walked out. The staff were very nice and helpfull but I would think twice about staying here again. Mr V R Y Dissapointed
Much better than expected!

After reading some of the reviews on this site I was very wary about my booking at this hotel. However me and my boyfriend were pleasantly surprised! I dont understand how the reviews could be so damning. The hotel is basic, but clean and the staff are friendly and helpful. The few problems that did occur were sorted immediately. The name of 'Alexandra palace' may be slightly misleading and if youre looking for a bit of luxury then this isnt for you, but as a base to explore malta this is fine. I would say that it is more suited to young couples or independants as the area has a lively night life and could be quite noisy at peak times, but overall we had a very enjoyable stay, and for what we paid it was good value for money.
value for money

I can't understand what's the complain about Alexandra Hotel is, it's not a 5 star hotel and people know it before they booked I stayed with my daughter in Nov.06 for 26 days, and we enjoyed every minute of our stay, it's value for money, rooms clean, breakfast good and plenty, bar and bistro good and reasonable priced, staff friendly and they go out of thier way to help you. it's close to everything, 5 minutes from sliema and 15 minutes from Valletta, 20cent (maltese) a trip, sure there are better hotels then ALEXANDRA in Malta I cheched at a higher price, I' m visiting Malta again in 2008 with my sister and guese where I'm going to book , Alexandra Hotel.
