I had to stay in the Best Western City Hotel a couple of weeks ago and was very pleasantly surprised. I know Edinburgh inside out but had never come across this hotel before. It is in the west end of the fairly close to the castle. The hotel used to be an old maternity hospital hundreds of years ago and is set in a residential area.
It must have a couple of hundred rooms and is set over about 5 floors. By chance we ended up having a family room which was great it had 2 separate bedrooms, both with double beds in them. Our room was very big and had the usual tea and coffee (real coffee, not instant). It also had a television in each room.
A continental breakfast is included, if you would like a cooked breakfast it is around £8.50. The cooked food is not buffet style you order it and they will bring it out to you. There was about 5 different cooked dished for breakfast including a vegetarian cooked breakfast which I had.
Overall it is a very nice hotel in a quiet area of Edinburgh so you will have trouble getting to sleep at night. Would happily stay there again.

The Great Western, easily located but discreetly hidden away in a beautiful period building and providing on-site parking, is within a short uphill walk from the likes of the great Princess Street and local pubs and restaurants and offers many up to date extras including internet access from some of it's many very comfortable and cheerful rooms.
Breakfast, a choice of either Continental or full Scottish, offered a great selection of well presented freshly cooked and prepared foods and although advertised until 09:30am, the staff were more than happy to cater for those who had been sampling the local life until the wee early hours.
The staff were incredibly friendly and this is definitely a hotel I would recommend to anyone traveling to Edinburgh.

Got a cracking deal from lastminute which included the hotel and a discount at a lovely little restaurant.
The City Hotel is situated bang in the middle of the City, meaning that we could visit the sites quite easily. Apart from shopping our hearts out we also went to visit Edinburgh Castle which is magnificent.
The Hotel itself looks very grand with its Victorian feel. The staff were OK. Nothing special and not too bad. They were courteous but didn’t seem to go that extra mile.
Our choice of hotel was simply based on the deal we got. If we go to Edinburgh again I'm sure we would choose a different place to stay.
