Sep 2006, Mr M Sellars

The hotel was kept very clean, has very helpful friendly staff and a good restaurant. I would recommend staying here as it is what you would expect from a 3 star hotel but without the horror stories.
The location is very quiet... well except at night as there is a lot of traffic (Get a poolside room).
Los Americas is not far down the road and has a night life...BUT... It is a bit tacky (though the beaches are lovely). Plenty of shops that will try EVERY trick in the book to rip you off, you were warned. The taxi from the resort to Los Americas generally try and charge 15-19 Euros but I discovered that if you offer them 10 Euros before leaving they will generally take you. The buses are frequent and are the best way to travel apart from late at night.
To sum it up.....
The Spanish were all great. The bars and restaurants in Los Americas generally have 'PR's outside trying to get you to use their bar (can get REALLY tedious). There are lots of Africans selling sunglasses and watches (expect to be approached a lot)
Lots of electronic stores (they WILL try and rip you off). Everything is pretty much a copy (cigarettes included... buy from a Spanish run shop!)
BUT, I had a good time... well worth a recommendation, especially if you are looking to sun surf and indulge the Spanish side of things.

Aug 2006, Mr J  Biddiscombe

Ok, It wasn’t my best holiday but certainly wasn’t my worst! When we arrived we were told we were not booked in which didn’t make for a happy start. After standing in reception for about 15 minutes while the guy on reception didn’t tell you what was going on we were given a room.
We walked into our room on the third floor facing the road, it appeared very clean etc, when we opened the balcony door all you could smell was smoke and steam coming from a chimney out of the Chinese restaurant next door! We stayed there one night then had a word with reception and they moved us without a problem to a much nicer room on the 8th floor facing the pool and behind it mountains. There was building work going on but nothing that would irritate.
The Food........
The first couple of days we had very nice food. Inc, steak, lamb shanks, leg of lamb and duck. Then for breakfast there was fish and prawns stuffed in the scrambled eggs!! (what’s all that about) to be honest breakfast was their worst meals.
We ended up eating out for the last three days. however, the hotel did have a couple of good acts in the evening i.e the knife thrower and the magician was by far the best (I mean where did she go!!!) bar staff were very nice, stay away from the lager and house whiskey, I found myself drinking rum and coke all week! Ill leave you with that, my girlfriend wants to write her own about the resort etc.

May 2006, Mrs J Cole

Just got back from Playa Paraiso. We first went to this resort in l993 and have been back 8/9 times since. Our last visit was in 2004. Always stayed at the Oasis and found the hotel to be really nice.
The staff have always been friendly and courteous to us and go out of their way to be helpful. Although we could not fault the service in the hotel we were disappointed with the resort itself. We were surprised to find how dilapidated the place has become with numerous bars and shops closed down. The building works were not a problem but it seems that they should now start thinking of cleaning up the main street which may encourage a few more shops and bars.
Overall, if its a quiet holiday you want with plenty of sun this is the ideal place. If you want a good night life and lots of shops go to Las Americas or Los Cristianos.

The hotel is a large typical 3 star...
8 / 10
Mar 2006, Mr J B

The hotel is a large typical 3 star Spanish Hotel with over 500 rooms on 16 floors, built about 20 years ago. Due to its size it does get busy in certain areas such as the dining room & bar area, particularly at week ends.
All rooms have a sea view except the 4 rooms on each floor that face the road at the rear of the hotel. The best rooms with sun on the balcony most of the day are the ones overlooking the pool area and all have numbers 08/09/10/11.
Some rooms have adjoining doors, and although we did not have one of these, we did hear complaints from guests who said they found this a problem, as they were able to hear guests in the adjoining room through the door.
The rooms do not have air conditioning, just a ceiling fan, which was fine in February but could be hot in the summertime.
Generally the hotel is in a fairly good state for it’s age, particularly the dining room and bar lounge, which look as though they have been renovated recently. The bedrooms are a reasonable size and generally were in a good state, with everything working and when on the odd occasion something did need attention, it was dealt with immediately by the repair team. The corridors on each floor did however look a bit shabby, with torn floor covering and holes in the walls where recent fire prevention work had not been finished off properly.
The hotel only has the one outside pool area, which was of ample size and well looked after, but in Feb/March was a little too cold for most people. I expect in summer this would be fine.
The housekeeping was of a good standard with rooms cleaned every day, towels changed daily and sheets changed several times a week. The other public area and gardens seemed to be attended to daily.
The staff all seemed to be efficient and helpful, without “being over the top” or fawning after you when ever you spoke to them. We were surprised to read other comments from guests who complained about staff attitudes…perhaps this is more to do with the way these guests spoke to the staff! We certainly found no problems here.
The food was good, with a wide choice offering something for everyone.
Breakfasts had all the usual things both hot and cold, from cereals to bacon, eggs etc. The evening meals had lots of choice from salads to hot dishes, and a carved roast joint most evenings. There was also a kids section of burgers, fish fingers etc. We did hear the odd complaint that the food was not very hot, although we had no problems, and there were two microwave ovens available if required.
The restaurant did get quite busy at peak times between 7.30- 8.30, so it was easier to go either early or late if you wanted to miss the crowds.
The entertainment was organised by a team of three staff, Miriam, Gina & Danny who were all-excellent and went out of their way to make sure everyone had a good time. During the day they organised rifle shooting, archery, French bowls, mini golf and various other games that were always well-attended and good fun.
Kids were also looked after with activities provided by both the hotel staff and the tour company.
The evening entertainment consisted of a kids disco at 9.00pm followed by bingo every evening, which is not to everyone’s taste. This was then followed by a good show on alternate evening, although it did not start till 10.30, which was a little late for some people. On the evenings when there was no show, the entertainment staff organised their own shows, which were watch-able and usually quite funny.
Although some guests went out on an evening to the local bars because the drinks were cheaper, we did not find the drinks in the hotel expensive. Local beer was £2 [3 euros] a pint and spirits about the same for a good measure. These prices were still cheaper than home, and as some of the outside bars looked a little seedy, we preferred to drink in the comfort of the hotel lounge.
The area surrounding the hotel was not particularly appealing. It consisted of one short street on a fairly steep hill, made up of a few bars and shops, with two supermarkets, which tended to stock most things people require on holiday.
There is quite a bit of building work going on around the area, although not right next to the hotel. The noise was not disruptive to us, but some people might be put of by the sight of all the cranes working during the daytime.
There are a few good walks along the cliff tops to the adjoining villages on either side of the resort but no real beaches to speak of, just rocks.
Because there is not much to do on the resort the hotel provide a free courtesy bus, which goes to Las Americas, and back three times a day. The journey takes about 15 minutes and the bus tended to get full at busy times, particularly the one leaving the hotel at 10.30 so it is advisable to get there early for this bus.
To sum up, we stayed at the hotel for a month in January/February and thought it offered good value for money, especially when compared to similar hotels in Las Americas or Los Cristianos. We would happily go back again in the future, as we are the sort of people who like a quiet time, but for those seeking a bit more action, particularly lots of shopping or plenty of night life, this hotel & area might not be for you.

Fantastic value for money. We had a lovely break in Tenerife. The hotel was lovely - standard for a 3star but clean & tidy. food was nice - good selection although not always very hot & seemed to have a similar selection each night. By the final night i was glad for a Chinese next door!
Rooms were nice - standard tourist room. Have connecting doors though so your neighbours will wake you as you can hear every word they say!
Pool was nice but very cold in Feb!! Shame that there is no beach but Lado is picturesque. We preferred the pool as it was fresh water & less steps!
Local bars are good although sparse - a mix of local Spanish bars & English pubs.
Open till late so balcony doors need to be shut at night. Constant coaches too. Leave enough time to get to the bottom floor though as 2 lifts for each 7 floors is not enough.
Overall an enjoying break for the money!

Jan 2006, Mr D Pownall

The rooms were clean and cleaned on a daily basis the dining room was geared to non British holiday makers, and the food was not over hot still there was a microwave oven for re-heating the food, as for the hotel well it was a good way out and although there was a courtesy bus into Las Americas it was quite full and on return you had to be in the queue quite early.
The resort was not very active and we found ourselves getting a taxi into Playa las Americas on a night at a cost of 18.50euros and 18.50euros return so over the week we ended spending more than we intended.

Jan 2006, Miss S Swinscoe

This was a great hotel for 3 star. Food was varied and lots of choice at meal times. Pool bar was really nice, particularly enjoyed the pizzas and cheese & ham toasties.
The local beer is really cheap and very tasty... its called Dorada.
Rhythm & booze is great too, this is a pub/karaoke bar just a couple of doors away from the hotel. They do some lovely cocktails and for only 5 Euros.
Make sure you try the steakhouse across the road from the hotel... you get a huge plate of steak and chips with a beer/wine or soft drink for only 5 Euros. Id recommend this hotel for anyone looking for a relaxing holiday with a few bars, restaurants at hand.

Location --------- Playa Paraiso is a...
6 / 10
Dec 2005, Mr P Dutton

Location
---------
Playa Paraiso is a tiny resort about 15km away from the bright lights of Playa De Las Americas. The resort is basically one street comprising of 4 hotels, although there is a lot of work going on and the resort is growing. Strangely, although the resort seems to have grown in the 7 years since we last visited, it didn’t seem anywhere near as busy, though this could have been due to the time of year.
There are some shops in the resort, a couple of supermarkets (the supermarket Felipe being the best/cheapest by some distance), a few electrical shops (I don’t recommend buying ANY electrical items from these shops as the owners will rip you off given half a chance, a particular favourite being the copied gameboy cartridges containing multiple games they buy from Japan for a few dollars and sell to the mums and dads for £40-£50) and some basic touristy type shops. There are also a few restaurants and bars, including a Chinese restaurant and the obligatory Karaoke bar.
Aside from shops/bars, there is also a freshwater Lido (not used it myself so cannot really comment) but, alas, no beach.
Whether or not you will enjoy staying in the resort is, of course, down to personal preference. Some will find it relaxing to be isolated, others will find it boring. Personally I couldn’t stay in the resort for longer than a week, though the free bus to Las Americas put on by the hotel is very useful, and I recommend using it and doing any shopping in Las Americas as prices tend to be a little lower. Los Gigantes is also within easy reach using a local Titsa bus.
Hotel Facilities
--------------
The hotel has quite a few facilities: swimming pool, Jacuzzi, squash court, tennis court, table tennis, pool tables. I have to say that I found that they had allowed the facilities to run down a little, for example, the net on the table tennis table was on its last legs and the tennis court looked very run down.
There is quite a lot of space available for sun bathing, though I think it could get a little crowded when the hotel is full as there isn’t an awful lot of space to sunbathe around the pool. The lower level sunbathing area had also been closed off during my stay, though I’m not sure why.
Within the hotel there are a few shops, and also a wash room should you feel the urge to do your washing before going home (yeah, right!)
Room
------
The room we were in was fairly nice (in a typical holidaymaker room way), but unfortunately we were overlooking the road and the noise was horrendous. Loud music, constant traffic noise etc… Definitely try to get a room overlooking the pool if possible. I was disappointed with the lack of air conditioning in the room, with only a ceiling fan being available (though you can hire air con units from reception). There is also a TV with some UK channels available (Sky Sports 1, Sky Movies, BBC1, ITV etc…) if you choose to pay for them (around €18 for a week), but you don’t go on holiday to watch Eastenders do you?
Food
-----
I found the food to be a little disappointing to be honest. There was a pretty big selection both at breakfast and dinner, but it seemed to always be the same thing.
For breakfast there was a selection of cereals (I loved the muesli), cakes/pastries, fruit, yogurts, breads, cold meats and cheese. There was also the normal “British” style breakfast options (bacon, egg, sausage etc..) though I didn’t try these as they looked like they had been cooked in far too much fat (even the baked beans seemed to be swimming in grease).
Generally at dinner there was freshly carved meats or paella, this was in addition to the other choices which normally included a pork, fish, chicken and beef dish. There was also pasta and some “kids” items (chicken nuggets and omelette generally). Aside from the main course there was also a large variety of salad items, breads and some soup.
I have two main criticisms of the food on offer at the hotel:
1) There was very little choice for vegetarians. Almost everything had meat in it, including most of the pasta and a lot of the salad items.
2) The deserts were very poor. Basically the choice was yogurt (pots), ice cream (pots), fruit (plenty of choice, but always the same), caramel/chocolate desert (looked revolting), rice pudding or some kind of sponge cake with jam/cream on top. The worst item of all however was something that looked like raisons in milk!
A bit of advice for anyone who is considering taking the full board option available in the Portland Direct brochure. DON’T. The price is £13 per day in the brochure for a lunchtime meal, however you can pay on arrival at the hotel to upgrade to one of 2 available options. Option 1 (€13 per day) allows you to get drinks all day (between 10:00 and 24:00) from the bar (national drinks, not just locally produced drinks). Option 2 (€17.50 per day) gives you all the benefits of option 1, plus allows you to have lunch in the restaurant/barbeque and you can also get sandwiches from the poolside bar between 10am and 5pm. So you can actually go all-inclusive by paying on arrival for roughly the same price as Portland want to charge you just to get lunch! The prices are cheaper for children under 16, but I cannot remember offhand what they were. For more information it might be best to look at the hotel website www.fiestahotels.com
Daytime Entertainment
-----------------------
There seemed to be plenty going on during the day, with regular activities scheduled by the hotel entertainment team, rifle shooting, French bowles, pool and water polo being typical examples. Kids seemed to be well catered for too, with activities being provided by both the hotel entertainment team and the Thompson reps.
Evening Entertainment
-----------------------
This was a bit of a mixed bag and to my mind disappointing. The evening entertainment in the hotel generally followed a familiar pattern: 9pm kids disco, 10pm bingo and then the main entertainment beginning at around 10.30pm. The main entertainment was either something put on by the hotel entertainment team (e.g. Mr/Mrs Oasis Paraiso or similar) or an outside act. I’m loathe to be too harsh on the quality of the entertainment, as it must be difficult to find things that will appeal to the various nationalities staying in the hotel, but overall I found evenings there to be a little boring.
Staff
-----
All of the staff at the hotel I found to be generally excellent. The hotel entertainment team were brilliant with the kids and made a real effort to get people involved in the activities. The restaurant and bar staff were super efficient and couldn’t clear the table’s quick enough. Finally the reception staff were always able to help with any queries we had, and weren’t trying to flog us trips like the Thompson rep (we asked for the price of a taxi to the Los Christianos market, which came to €15, and he tried to sell us tickets to go on the Thompson “trip” for €15 each!).
Overall
-------
I would say I enjoyed my stay at the hotel, but I don’t think I’ll be going back. There simply isn’t enough to do or see in the resort. I was also a little disappointed with Tenerife in general, how many more electronics shops, British pubs and tourist tat shops do they think people need?

Aug 2005, Mr K Bird

Pretty good.
The hotel & rooms were clean and tidy, the staff were courteous and always helpful. The buffet style breakfast and evening meal were plentiful, varied and tasty.
Although it was the height of the season and the hotel was fully booked, there were always sun loungers available and the pool was never crowded. Entertainment staff were always trying to keep you busy, but were never pushy. The evening entertainment was also very good.
The courtesy buses, while helpful, were always full and we found it easier to use the local bus service to get to and from Las Americas.
We did find that all the doors in the hotel needed to be slammed to get them to shut, and with people arriving and leaving 24 hours a day, the nights can be noisy. Building work is on two sides at the moment and although approx. 200 metres away it is constant from 7:30am till 6:00 pm. Not loud enough to be disturbing but it is always in the background, especially by the pool. The lifts to floors 8 - 16 seemed to be intermittent and the stairs took a pounding. It was often easier to walk down to the 7th floor and get a lift from there.
We had good weather, high 80's, which did make the rooms warm at night and if you left the windows open the sound of coaches arriving and partying in the bars may keep you awake.
A good holiday is what you make of it, and the good bits did make up for what are really minor inconveniences.

Don’t know where to start about...
1 / 10
Jul 2005, Mr P George

Don’t know where to start about hotel or resort!!!
Hotel is high rise, if you do stay ask for low floor as it will take you 10 mins waiting for lift. The place needs a good facelift, lick of paint etc
Food average, hotel bar prices expensive.
Waiters miserable and rude!
The pool area clean although there is a smell of
Sewage once in a while.
If you want a view of a large building site you have come to the right place!
Reception staff not helpful that is unless you are German or Spanish in which case they will do anything for you..
The Thompson’s hotel rep was rubbish and hopeless at his job but will be happy to book you on an over inflated trip, which you can book yourself for half the price ..well done Thomson’s!!!!
Now to the resort.....about 4 bars one street the worst beach you will ever see
Rubbish all over place, cats dogs mice rats cockroaches out of horror movies...well that’s my opinion. You decide for yourself.
Thomson’s you should be ashamed of yourselves using this resort and hotel.

The hotel is fab!
It is in a very quiet part of Tenerife. There were a couple of shops, restaurants and bars across the road from the hotel but all you need for a relaxing holiday. After a morning in Las Americas we were glad of our choice of resort! We weren’t hassled once.
The staff are great especially the Entertainment staff although when you’re lying by the pool they can be a pain. The food was excellent, a very wide choice to suit all. There is also a lovely Steak house across the road and the waiters in there were great! The bar is large and I recommend watching the hotel shows there because they are surprisingly good.
We didn’t have any trouble in the room with adjoining doors like the other review. Don’t really have any bad points apart from the pool, it’s freezing!
