The hotel has lake views, but is not on the lake, but it is only a short walk down to the lake where you will find a gorgeous little bar/cafe called the Magnolia tree (and a fantastic, huge magnolia tree) which is lovely on a night as they put up a canopy. The drinks are very good value and they even provided complimentary bruschetta for our party- delicious! The downside of the hotel is the lack of paths outside- be very careful when walking around as people drive like maniacs!
The village is well served by the buses, and if you fancy a moderate stroll the village of Cadennabia is nearby to catch ferries to the lovely Bellagio. The food at Hotel Lario was mixed, breakfast being cold, with cakes, pastries, bread, meat and cheese (very nice) and evening meal being typically pasta or soup for starters, meat and potato and veg for mains and various cakes for dessert. I must say that the portions are small (I get the feeling they are being controlled by the manager) and sometimes the main courses were bland (the palenta dish was truly awful) but largely adequate when catering for a large party such as ourselves.
It would however be nice to experience some traditional Italian dishes- meat and two veg was very English! The terrace outside was gorgeous when it was sunny, with a pool which could have done to be heated but I'm sure in the height of summer would be great. The only thing this hotel lacked was somewhere to sit on a night, as if the weather was not kind, and sitting on the terrace was not feasible there was nowhere to sit as the dining room was prepared for breakfast as soon as the evening meal had finished. If you bring a car there is a very secure underground garage.
I would recommend Hotel Lario for anyone coming to Como wanting a base hotel, but would recommend that you go elsewhere for evening meals!
