Grand Imperiale Hotel

This hotel was the last stop on our trip, and I wish we had stayed in Tuscany instead. As you attempt to drive up to the hotel you are faced with extremely narrow and windy roads. Thankfully the hotel is at the base of the lake and it is not far from the airport. I would not stay any higher up, b/c it will take hours to drive down to the base. The name says it all: "Best Western Grand Hotel...". Sound like a contradiction? Stayed here for 4 nights in what must be some of their best rooms (see below). I would summarise as follows: The Good: 1. Its in Moltrasio, which is a very quiet lakeside community not at all overrun by tourists. Our second stay at this hotel. Still beathtakingly beautiful location , grounds and pool. We requested a deluxe room with lake view and received an average room with a side lake view. The breakfast and bar staff were excellent, friendly and accomodating. The room was average, a little tired but with all necessities. The downside: We waited over an hour for our luggage to arrive in our room and this was after we called the front desk. Interesting to read the various reviews of the Imperiale on Trip Advisor. My wife and I, have, like many Brits, totally fallen in love with Lake Como, and our second trip to Moltrasio last year (the first being in August 2003) was aimed at using the hotel as a stopover to look for property in the area. However, another week of great service and total relaxation by the superb pool made us forget about looking for an apartment as the whole point of a relaxing vacation is to be looked after, and the Imperiale does this in spades. Our family of four stayed in two deluxe rooms in a building separate from the main hotel, overlooking the pool, gardens and lake. The view from our balcony was breathtaking and a real treat to wake up to. The drawback, as with most European hotels, is that we couldn't get a room to occupy four people, which means you must pay double for a second room. Location, location, location. This hotel has it! A quiet village right on the lake, with a hotel that spans both sides of a fairly quiet road. The hotel is primarily across the street from the waterfront and many of the rooms have good full/partial water views. The pool and one of the restaurants are on the waterside, as are a few very upscale looking rooms in a seperate building. Dirty, old and unfriendly. Two hotel restaurants. High end, which offers a nice setting with pricey food not worth the money. We had our meal come back TWICE cold. Front desk was not helpful or nice. Not accomodating at all. Second restaurant was closed for a group only meals. No options but the bad expensive place. Don't want to dress it up every night. Rooms are dank and disappointing. Walls are paper thin...had the "honeymooners" next to us? Up all night! Bad experience. Left two days early.

A very nice experience. We spent five nights there in September, 2005. Looking forward to a return visit. Take the boat not a cab from Como. The man at the boat dock is one of the most helpful people you will ever meet. If you hike up the hill to the little store next to the church say hello to Carlo. A nice hotel in a very nice part of the world.

I lived in the region and have stayed at the Imperiale. Whoever wrote about "potential" got it right. The original building is a stunning villa and the location could not be better. Moltrasio is a gorgeous village on Lake Como. The problem of the hotel is that it has been gutted of charm by Best Western. Would should be a beautiful hotel and lobby might as well be a large Best Western in Des Moines, Iowa. After the wonderful reviews this hotel has received, we felt it is appropriate to add a few words of caution. It is absolutely true that the location of the hotel is great and everybody in the hotel is very helpful. The food at the hotel restaurant is not very special, but the location of the restaurant at the lakeside is unbeatable. The major drawback for us was the room.
