The Marcliffe Hotel at Pitfodels

I have always been sceptical about packages over the Festive period. Today we have returned from a wonderful trip at the Marcliffe and my scepticism has been blasted away. Even though the function was for a large number of people the food was exceptional. Breakfast the next morning was a delight with all staff wishing you a happy New Year as if you were family. We stayed at the Marcliffe for one night in December as we were attending a wedding at the hotel the next day. The public areas downstairs are fantastic. Traditional 'country house' style decor with plenty of big comfy sofas and open fires. We arrived after midnight due to a delayed flight but staff were helpful and attentive, and we were able to sit in the lounge and have drinks from the bar despite the hour. Extremely good hotel. Upgraded to a suite - very pleased. Nice spa shame there was no pool. The restaurant was excellent and the guest living room (bar) was a great place to sit and chill out. Breakfast was good - staff at reception a little bit condescending and did not follow up with requests.

My husband and I visited the hotel for his birthday this July. As he works in Aberdeen I surprised him by booking us into The Marcliffe for a meal and overnight stay. The hotel is set in beautiful grounds only 15 minutes in a taxi from the train station (the journey seems much shorter since the taxi drivers keep you entertained!). Stayed here as part of a party of eight guys on a golf trip to N.E.Scotland. Check-in was efficient and friendly. Room was comfortable and clean, if not spectacular. Shower was hot and the towels were soft and fluffy. Bed was comfortable. Service in the very nice bar and restaurant was first class. Food very good - not overly ambitious but quality ingredients cooked professionally. Nice friendly staff. Good snooker room to hang around and have a few drinks in after dinner. I would recommend this hotel, and would certainly go back.

I live near this hotel and have been there several times for meals, receptions, and meetings. The hotel's description of itself as an "elegant country house" is misleading. This is a large building, mostly if not entirely modern. It's elegant enough, but no "country house" as most people would understand it. The grounds and the situation are very pleasant. Can't comment on the bedrooms.

We visited this hotel as a freebie with my husbands work. It is absolutely beautiful. The room was spacious, immaculate and sumptious. The selection of teas/coffees were brilliant and they even had a small larder with shortbread and cookies for your pleasure. Fresh fruit and mineral water came as standard. This was a special break to celebrate our 2nd wedding anniversary. Everything from the sumptuous sofas, excellent service to the home made tablet made our visit memorable. We will be back!

I recently took a table of 10 guests to a charity function at the Marcliff Hotel, and was dissappointed to find that the red wine had been mistaken for white,and chilled in error. The staff were obviously busy and rather than make a fuss in front of my guests, I wrote to the manager to complain about this. Expecting at least an appology for this oversight, I received an extremely rude reply, and was told not to come back.
