Thistle Hotel Aberdeen Caledonian Reviews

8 / 10
Jan 2008, Mrs A Milne

Near to the train station. Parking available. No access to rooms until 2pm. There is a cafe/bar at the hotel which is reasonable. The reception got a porter to take our luggage to the room which was a nice touch. Our room was large and airy with plenty space between the... more

3 star not more
Service was good all over, just happy faces. Rooms are ok A bit simple included breakfast, but you could order more for a fee. Food was good in the diner, we did not try the restaurant. Next time I think we will book a 4-star hotel.
Food - disgusting!!
Well what can I say!! Stayed previously, around 4 years ago and had a lovely stay and the food was fantastic!! THIS time however, has helped me come to the decision that I will NEVER set foot in this property again! Reception staff friendly enough. Room a bit shabby, but liveable. The public bar downstairs - staff uninterested in customers so we decided to dine in the main restaurant - but wow what a disappointment!! Over priced, bland food that I could have cooked better myself. Thought about asking to meet with the chef but decided against it when we heard swearing coming form the kitchen. Whoever you chef is - needs spoken to regarding his language and possibly assisted with a cookery course to get the basics right at least! I will NEVER be back here again!
4 star prices for 2 star quality hotel
Upon check-in, the hotel could find no trace of my reservation even though I had a print-out from their online booking service. To make matters worse, the room I was eventually offered was so small I could hardly bring myself to stay in it. The price paid was £80 for a double room at a discounted "last minute" rate. After a move to a second room, things didn't get any better. Admitedly, the room was slightly larger, but because the room was situated at the rear of the hotel with only one small window, the overall ambience was dark and oppressive. In the end I was forced to upgrade to an Executive Room at an addition cost of £37, just so I could have a bit of space. On the plus side, all rooms were clean and the breakfast was very impressive. This hotel is rated as 4 Star - the prices may be worthy of a four star hotel - but I've stayed in much better quality 2 & 3 star hotels. Please avoid this Hotel if you expect large bedrooms and genuine 4 Star luxury service.
This hotel was a disappointment
We expected more out of a Thistle Hotel then we received here. The service was marginal and the food was nothing to write home about. It seemed to take forever to walk to our room. Not good for folks with limited mobility.
Single rooms are a joke
I stayed in a single room and was glad to leave. The room was very small - I've never seen a hotel room smaller - and the bathroom was so narrow you could barely turn around. I didn't like the look of the shower (not clean) either. Having said that, the food is very good for the money, and the location is great. The hotel itself looks nice enough - it just seems to be the smaller room that are the problem. Given that there are so few hotels in central Aberdeen, I will go back to this one. I will, however, have to pay for a double room because the single is not worth the money.
Not 4 star quality
Small room on fourth floor, bathroom definitely needed updating (cracked and mouldy shower head), stuffy corridors smelled of dirty hoovers, overall the hotel looked rather worn and shabby and has seen better days. On the plus side the central location is excellent and the outlook at the front over the gardens is green and attractive. Nice restaurant room/breakfast room with a good selection of hot and cold food and attentive staff. Adequate 3 star but definitely not 4 star standard. There's a first-class Italian restaurant just along the street unimaginatively named Pavarotti's but serving excellent food in a welcoming atmosphere.
Elegent hotel, fancy dining, depends on room
We rented 2 rooms- one for us and one for my parents. My room was too small and too hot. Try not to get a room that faces west. A/C can't keep up. My parents room was on east side, very comfortable and quiet. The hotel itself was very nice. Dining area was very upscale and pricy. Pub in hotel was noisy but fun. Hotel in just a block off the main street but on an active street itself. I would go back to this hotel but would insist on another room.
ok.... but
Ok hotel, not a four star quality. a little smelly, but clean. service ok+
