OK for what I needed
Stayed there on business recently for 2 nights. The hotel is easy enough to find, 10 mins from city centre, but a little uninspiring from the outside and with nothing other than Burger King in the vicinity. Having said that for £59 per night it served a purpose together with a pool and leisure facilities. The rooms were clean and reasonbly well decorated, I did not eat there so I cannot pass comment on the standard of the food. Would I stay there again? probably at a price on par with a Travel Lodge.
Great value
We stayed here for an excellent rate. The hotel is only 5 mins easy drive (no traffic queues) from city centre. The room was of a good size and very clean and comfortable. The breakfast was fine, reasonable choice. The staff were not over friendly but very efficient. Will definately stay again.
Thistle Disaster
We were well warned by others that this Hotel could be a disaster but with no other last minute accommodation available in Aberdeen we had no choice. £71 room only internet special rate. Dinner was extortionate at £41 for two main courses and £19.60 for two glasses of house wine. Six East European staff tried to serve a total of 9 people in the restaurant. Everyone thought the other was attending to it so nothing got done. I don't blame the staff but the non existent management!! Check out next day was the final insult which took nearly 30 minutes. Charged £21.95 for two breakfasts which we never had. These were removed from the bill without question. (Presumably one could have breakfast and then deny it or everyone gets charged automatically unless they protest??) Waited for ages for my credit card to be returned and when asked was told that my card had been declined. I was mortified and offered to phone my card company for an explanation but suddenly their excuse was that the card machine not the company had 'declined' my card. Funnily enough it went through on a second attempt and I am given two receipts of card payments one for the accommodation and one for the meal. Having politely complained over the whole experience no one had the grace to even apologise never mind do anything about it, but obviously it is easy money for them whilst Aberdeen booms. This used to be a super Hotel when first constructed and is still a great building with good facilities but since Thistle took it over it has become yet another Thistle Disaster.
Realy good value
I travel fairly regularly on business, my company, who shall remain nameless for reasons of job security, are er.... value minded, we shall say! So usually where available use a travel lodge. I have to say I dislike these very much, after work I like to have a quiet pint and a half reasonable meal, something often not possible in travel lodge. Having protested, I found myself booked into this hotel, actually cheaper than the travel lodge at £50 for the night, Bed AND Breakfast, the facilities were far superior. The "value rooms" were on the ground floor opposite a busy main road; however this did not present any real noise problems. From arrival to departure the staff were very warm and friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them. In the bar I was served by a young Polish lad whose eagerness to learn about our culture and lifestyle and to improve his English was refreshing. Anyway, the eating options were to either have a meal in the bar or to use the restaurant, the prices were reasonable at around £12 for a main course so I chose the restaurant and was very happy with the quality and presentation of my meal. The hotel boasts a leisure complex which is free to use for hotel guests. Overall I would say if you want a reasonable level of comfort with excellent service but are on a budget, this is the hotel for you!
Looks grim, but warm welcome inside
We stayed at the Thistle Altens as we needed a hotel in south Aberdeen with easy access to Stonehaven. Only a 20 minute drive from the airport and easy to find, it looked like a prison, or an office block from the outside, but inside we found a warm welcome. The hotel is a bit tired in places but our room was probably refurbished in the past couple of years. They have got good leisure facilties - pool, spa, solarium, gym etc on site in their OTIUM health club. Access free to guests. We didn't have the breakfast at almost £11 per head - there's a Burger King or a garage with an excellent shop across the street to stock up, and tea/coffee facilities in the room. I suspect this hotel relies on conferences and weddings - neither of which were happening during our night's stay. So we had a very peaceful night. A great advantage to this hotel - ample free parking! Loads of spaces, so even with a function here, guests would have no problem parking. On Expedia, Hotel.com and other sites the stay was an absolute bargain at only around £50 per night for a double room - less than the price of a Bed and Breakfast guest house!
Great leisure facilities for price of room!
I stayed in Thistle Altens, Aberdeen for four nights in August 2006 on business. I booked here because we managed to get a decent corporate rate and as Im a young girl away on business I wanted some leisure facilites and movies. The pool is lovely and the jacuzzi is great too! They have sauna and steam room as well which are also nice. Great value to be able to use that for nothing. Breakfast was nice although expensive. The restaurant is good but quite formal but in the bar which also serves food the bar menu is too basic. The room was nice but shower on its way out, managed to get it to work but was on its last legs. The option to be able to watch a movie was good, quite expensive but if you aren't going out its a cheap alternative to keep yourself occupied. Staff that i encountered were very friendly, I found a spider in my room and felt silly ringing room service but she was lovely and sent a porter over to get rid of the spider! The beds were VERY comfy! NEver slept in a more comfortable bed!! All in all a great place to stay providing you are not paying over the odds for it. The location was ideal for me as our office was down the road. You seem to find the hotels in the city centre and not very nice and usually very cramped, i could never get a parking slot in the centre but here in Altens there was plenty of parking. Ideal for anyone on business or looking for a quiet break.
Dull and Boring
I stayed at Thistle Altens for almost 10 days on a business trip. It started to get boring on the 2nd day. The room is clean, but I spent 2 hours on one night trying to reach the housekeeping to dry up my bathroom floor and nobody was answering. Breakfast is average, it's exactly the same every morning..it is definitely upsetting for someone who doesn't eat sausages and bacon. Room service is good. TV is completely useless..it has 3 local channels and some other locked ones (v.expensive pay per view) We were woken up at 4.00am by a false fire alarm and rushed to the parking area while it was snowing and we all got sick!
hated the place
We arrived late because our flight from London had been delayed. I had booked on line to find they had no booking from me. Very poor reception from the man at the desk who was really not at all helpful. The breakfast was pretty average. The room certainly needs updating. I'm afraid the whole stay was a big disappointment. I would not stay at the Thistle Altens Aberdeen again.
Odd view but comfortable
The staff were very friendly and helpful when we had a short stay here. My wife is in a wheelchair and everywhere was accessible. The room was clean and comfortable but our window looked out on to an electricity pylon. Not exactly the hotel's fault, I know. The leisure facilities were overall good though the pool was a bit small and there was a broken seat in the steamroom. According to a regular visitor, it had been broken for some time. It's real saving grace was the restaurant cuisine. A very spacious restaurant and sumptuous food despite the modern loud music which seemed a little out of place in a formal restaurant. Also, the reception area would be better as non-smoking. It was so stuffy that the staff opened the front doors for ventilation despite the chilly March temperature. This is basically a business hotel that holds many conferences. It was comfortable but lacked the sophistication of a luxury hotel.
Okay hotel
Stayed here as my husband was on business. It is about 10-15 minutes from the city centre and is handy for getting back onto the main arterial routes. Bedrooms clean and tidy, beds comfortable, room service average. Breakfast is buffet style and alright - quite limited. I didn't use the pool so can't comment on these facilities. Looks like it was refurbished 2 to 3 years ago so is starting to show the effects of time. All in all okay hotel and would maybe go back just because it is handy for travelling.
