Big Sleep Hotel

"A design hotel at affordable prices"... hardly. At 109 quid a room, this was barely cheaper than the excellent Design Hotel I recently stayed at in Copenhagen, but the difference in quality was enormous. Our room on the 5th floor was decorated in a modern/ minimal style (that's what 'design' means, right? Wrong!) but cheaply and thoughtlessly executed (think Ikea). I read some of the reviews for this hotel on THIS website before my stay, & was a tad dreading what I may find. In the end, I actually enjoyed my stay, & would definately stay here again. One grumble I had, was because of an ''event' in Cardiff that day'' (U2 @ The Millenium Stadium..which I attended), they doubled the price of the room - which I guess MOST hotels in the area do?. The name is the best thing! We booked "new on the ninth" and paid £109 per room!! We were fed-up on the 5th, although this floor has been refurbed it was disappointing!! Grubby corridor, poor room fentilation/heating, poor/no noise insulation from the corridor and adjacent rooms, the curtains didn't meet and we received a TV wake up call cos the alarm HADN'T been reset when the room was cleaned. It’s a bed – in a room. What more do you want? I thought this minimalist hotel was good value for money. It was clean, the staff were pleasant and efficient, the breakfast was acceptable considering the price, and it is well located. On the other hand – my wife thought it was sparse and depressing. Her idea is that it is ok to pay double for a different hotel. But what does this buy you? An extra chair in the corner of the room is all so is it worth it?

OK, Just to set the tone, I'm a big fan of Hebert Ypma's Hip Hotels series of books and although not lucky enough to stay in most of the quality hotels he describes, as the Big Sleep is on my doorstep and I was having friends visiting for a weekend in Cardiff, I thought we'd try it out. I think the Big Sleep is one of the nicest hotels I have stayed at in Cardiff, I didn't even notice that the windows didn't open, it's clean and staff are helpful and friendly. Big Up the Big Sleep!!!!

No windows to open - feel tapped!!awful place!! stop in cardiff 3 times a month on business - will be my last choice in future. Turn it back into that office block it once was!!

My sister-in-law will never live down the day she booked us a night in The Big Sleep while visiting family in Cardiff. Known for her style and taste....she failed horribly this time round! It was the most disgusting place I have ever stayed. Very dirty, very smelly, very thin walls and the bar is disgusting. There is no parking except for a few spaces. upgraded to "new on ninth" - not worth it! Very minimalist hotel - no pictures apart from the one with John Malcovich (yes I do know he's part of the "Team" - but does he have to be so blatant?). Don't go to the bar unless you want a migraine - what wallpaper!. And the the breakfast room - more like a school refectory - and whoever thought of the colour scheme wants shooting! AND come on! who in this day and age wants to inhale other peoples nicotine while eating breakfast? Get rid of the table for smokers!! Take your own hairdryer... more
