Old Ground Hotel

We stayed at this hotel last Saturday and, I have to say, that it is the worst hotel we ever stayed at. The lobby smelled of Lestoil and when we were walking to our room there were vast areas of carpet that were totally worn out right down to the floor. The mattress tilted towards the floor. The dining room looked like it belonged in the Munster's.......dark, dreary and not inviting at all. The bar was decent and the food there was typical bar food and it was good. We stayed in the Old Ground hotel on 30 Oct. We had early check in (paid for the room on the 29 Oct., so we could check in early). The hotel was lovely, best bed we had on the entire trip, lovely sheets and towels. The pub is fantastic. We had our first of many pub meals there the night of 30 Oct. The location of the hotel is super, as are the grounds and public areas. If I had to give it stars I would probably call it a good, solid 4 star. Staff was friendly and helpful and breakfast was lovely.

Just got back from a three week trip to Ireland with my wife and without doubt this hotel was the highlight !!!!. From reading Trip advisor we gathered it was not cheap but when we called we got a double room for a stand by rate of USD 150 ( Normally USD 220 ). Ten years ago this would have been extortion in Ireland but now it is great value. Ok first the bad points 1. The Restaurant could not cope with the amount of guests having breakfast and the service was rushed which was totally not in keeping with the rest of the hotel. 2. TV channels... more

We stayed here one night before flying out of shannon the next morning. No real complaints.. our room was nice and clearly had been renovated fairly recently. The staff helped us find a place for dinner. Some of the common areas (eg hallways) and the exterior don't look that great, but the room is all that matters to us. Make sure you get an updated room, because we caught a glimpse into an "old" room, and it wasn't pretty. Based on the positive reviews, I'm assuming they don't have many old rooms.

Just returned from trip to Ireland and spent two days at this lovely hotel. The staff were so helpful, rooms were big and modern and very very nice. Excellent location with 2 choices of pub dining or formal dining. Breakfast was very good. Cannot go wrong with this place. Loved it.
