Rude and immature staff
We were bitterly disappointed with our visit to The Red Lion which happened to be on my Wife's birthday, this "hotel" also holds sentimental value as my late Father-in-Law regularly stayed here in the seventies. A particular aspect which stood out was the age of the staff. One barmaid in particular was rude, sullen and sarcastic. When it was later pointed out to her in a friendly manner that the Beer was off, she attempted (and failed embarrassingly) to prove otherwise - cue more sulks and comments to her colleague. In short, this... more
Nice but too expensive
This hotel is located in the centre of Salisbury. The ambience is beautiful. But it only lives from its past. the rooms/bathroom are clean. The floors are uneven. The other facililties in this hotel are poor. Too poor for the price you pay. I'm sure you'll find better places for that money.
Faded plush
The Hotel is steeped in history and unfortunately trades on this and has not moved with the times. OK, the courtyard is lovely, it is centrally situated in the town and has a certain " olde worlde charm", but the rooms are dowdy, the security system antiquated , the public rooms are like a back-lot set from Merrie England , there is no on-site car parking and the evening restuarant on one visit was appalling and overpriced. The staff were willing and the breafast was above average. Probably better as a summer venue than in the depths of an... more
FANTASTIC hotel!
We were so impressed with the staff and the hotel! The room was so special and had everything we needed. Very comfortable and I felt like I was truly in England!! It was charming to say the least. The hotel courtyard is a great place to sit and relax with a cup of tea or a pint of Guinness! What a lovely place!! Don't miss this hotel on your travels!
Adorable Hotel
I've stayed in this hotel twice - once in 2001 and once February 2005 - and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who prefers an old-fashioned comfortable family-run hotel. Its location is perfect and it has the added charm of consisting of four or five buildings of varying antiquity grouped around a courtyard; its composition is extremely eccentric, lots of winding corridors, exposed beams, two steps up and five down etc etc and no two rooms are alike. The first time we stayed we had a gorgeous room (the one they put on their post... more
Jewel in the Crown
We have tasted the phone in ALL the places to eat in Salisbury and can say this is the best value for money. We stayed for our wedding anniversary treat and felt like royalty.Left to do as we pleased but with a member of staff on hand to extend service of a extremly high standard when required. We recomend all our friends to use this place and our now regular attenders of the restaruant. If you want cheap and easy forget this place. If you want class and service this is the jewel in Salisburys crown.Les and Pam Blake
Staff Needs Attitude Adjustment
O.K., so it's a Best Western, and in the United States we don't expect much more than courtesy and friendly assistance from the front desk--after all it's not so much about service as it is about a convenient and good place to stay. Here, we checked in and my impression was that the staff was put off because they had to deal with us. I should have apologized for the interruption. The front desk clerk was not efficient but curt. The "porter" walked off in the direction of our room, leaving my wife and two kids to scurry after him with doors... more
Shocking
Found the place very snooty, unfriendly and shockingly over priced. Payed £150 for a double one night in low season. They said one price and increased it after they had a hold of my card. Would never go back. Advoid!!
Delightful
Don't let the Best Western sign scare you. This is definitely a family managed hotel with personalized attention to each guest. What a delightful and comfortable place to stay. The staff were very helpful, the food was excellent and the bar was friendly. We had lunch in the flower filled courtyard and dinner in the hotel dining room. Both were excellent. The rooms were clean, cozy, comfortable and charming. Down pillows and duvets. The location is perfect for visiting the area around Salisbury. We will definitely return to the Red Lion. May... more
Christmas in England
This is the quintessential English hotel. It is a 13th century coaching inn, clad with Virginia Creeper vines, lots of old, black beams, uneven floors, superb service and great food. The Christmas tree was set up near the main fireplace, and we were able to leave a few treats from Santa under it for the kids to open on Christmas morning. The kids even left carrots, cookies and milk for Santa, thanks to the staff. Since the hotel was closed to all except those staying in the hotel, it was a bit like a large family gathering. Staff were... more
