Berkeley Hotel

Very dissapointing stay. The rooms are extremely shabby and one of my colleagues rooms had a distinct smell of urine! The hallways smelt like an old people's home. Breakfast was disorganised and cold and we all woke up in the morning itching from sleeping in the beds. NOT recommended!

Room with sea view was lovely. The food was below average. The halibut I ordered was tasteless and chewy - how can you manage to do that to a beautiful fish like halibut? The wait between courses was very long. Trying to speed thing up, on the second night we both ordered fruit salad as soon as the main course plates were removed. 25 minutes later it arrived! Such a shame as it is in a really good position on the sea front but I don't want to return as food is important to me on a leisure break.

The receptionists were well hot, only if they had been my room service. Also the hotel was good I only stayed for a few days, but the food was good, they were friendly, it is seconds away from the beach. It was good no brilliant.

I have stayed in this hotel on a few occasions the last time before this one being in September 2004 at the time of my father's funeral. The staff were most helpful on that occasion providing a quick early lunch for my brother and his family when they arrived from out of town and being quite sympathetic in general. However, this month I found the place completely different. While the reception staff were courteous and pleasant they were very noisy discussing hotel business in voices loud enough to be heard all over the reception.... more

Just got back from staying one night at the Berkeley hotel booked two. Room was shabby - carpets throughout corridors and stairs very grubby. Hotel in need of total refurbishment. Food disgusting

It was just OK. The room was small but just about big enough. I had asked for no smoking but found myself in a smelly smoking room. Felt it was too much hassle to change. Wanted a drink in the bar after dinner out with colleagues but it was completely dead. Breakfast was OK too but the service was hopeless - toast never arrived. I wanted to check out early but the staff were inflexible insisting I check out after breakfast. Service was non existant

Stayed at the Berkeley with my Girlfriend who was on business. Hotel needs to be refurbished from floor 1 upwards. The rooms are really old fashioned, full of damp and are damaged. Such a depressing place especially when the weather is bad. Rooms on the front have poor windows that let in the wind and traffic noise and do not all open. Cooked English breckfast was not cooked, cold and totally disgusting and potentially dangerous. Staff not willing to take on complaints. Service awful. This place charges 20 - 30 quid more than comparable hotels on the same street but it beats me why. Room was shabby - window sill needed painting, carpet needed replacing, wall had been damaged, not even any freebies in the bathroom. was woken up by a chambermaid who could not speak english and just stood there saying time, time?...eventually realised she wanted to know when i was leaving the room. Service staff at breakfast were surly and unhelpful. Don't bother....there are better hotels with better rooms and better staff on the seafront.... more

I stayed in this hotel in early Feb 2005. It was an annual party for a club I am a member of. The hotel is a bit run down, The automatic doors at the front entrance are still not fixed. The room was small, but comfortable, the shower was very temperamental. Perhaps most surprising the hotel sent us all of to bed at 1 am when the party was just getting going. First impressions were not good. The "automatic" front doors were not functioning and there was sign a advising you to prise them open to gain entry! Stayed here recently on a business trip. Room was extremely small, very cold and depressing. Room and bathroom decor needs a complete overhaul. Do yourself a favour and stay at The Burlington. In comparison the rooms are modern, well equipped and the heating actually works.
