Alexander House Hotel

Our stay started well, we were welcomed at the desk and the porter was charming. The room was good - well furnished and cosy. But after that it went down hill. The temperature in the spa was cool - not as warm as you'd like. There were tiles missing from the outdoor spa, which looked a bit tatty. I had a 25 minute massage which lasted 20 minutes (this included the time to go up and down a flight of stairs to get to the room, undress etc). The hotel is lovely, beautifully decorated and fantastic surroundings. Rooms are really nice, we stayed in the new section of the hotel (which I was pleased about as apparently the original section of the hotel is haunted!!), we had a great shower, seperate bath, flat screen TV and DVD player, beds are a bit too soft though. The Spa was really really lovely..I'd recomend the Detox Cocoon Wrap!! The spa has a great pool area and a fantastic outside hot tub......great even in this fresh October weather!!!! Booked through laterooms for £99 including breakfast for a superior room. Amazing- rooms are individually designed with claw baths and great showers. The porter explains all your room to you and the staff are very friendly but no too in your face. DVD player and flat screen in all rooms It is expensive (if not booking through laterooms) and upmarket hotel but you feel very welcome and are treat impeccably. It's a funny place, this. Most of the reviews have picked up on something or other that wasn't quite right. For us, that something was the staff. Nobody was rude in the slightest, but they all just seemed a bit out-of-kilter with the luxury feel of the place - I think it's that they're not well-trained by the hotel. So I can't say I'd have anything major to complain of, but there were a number of little things that people just didn't seem to get quite right. Looks the ideal of how an English Country house should look. However, depending on your reason for staying, this hotel is either Nirvana, or just plain over-priced rubbish. For the traveller looking for a lovely place to stay before bugging out from Gatwick (other than the fact it's sodding miles out and there are very decent, much cheaper hotels closer to the Airport) then yes, I can see the attraction. Get up when you like and the chef might have arrived at work by then and you can pootle off to the pool for a dip, followed by a sauna... more
