Hylands Hotel

The hotel we had been booked into had a boiler problem on the night of the 5th and had arranged for us to stay in the Hylands as they were friends of theirs. Having been assured they knew we were coming, the older woman on reception at the Hylands was barely civil and claimed she had no reservation and they were full. Checked in and immediately had my credit card charged. I know this is done in other hotels but it simply should be made illegal to charge the full amount of the stay as soon as you check in. The woman who dealt with us was rude, cheeky and extremely curt. Our rooms were cold and damp and the bathrooms were revolting particularly affecting my senses of sight and smell. This hotel is regulary used by our visitors and to date has been fine. This week was a typical episode of faulty towers!! Arriving at the bar only 2 out of 6 beers available, in the restaurant only 4 tables ocupied by a surley waitress who was certainly taking her time. She did not know any answers regarding wines, and indeed the soup of the day. Service took 1 hour before starters appeared and no wine. on arrival of the hotel i was greeted with a very friendly and bubbley member of staff, who was very helpful in giving me directions to the city center and also recommended the hotels restaurant, witch i have to say was one of the best meals i had in a long time, the food was well presented and tasted fabolous. the breakfast was a little dissapointing though. The area of the city is nice and quiet and overlooks a park. Overall was a nice stay and i would stay here again.

From the moment we arrived through the entrance, the foist and smokey air hit us. Had time been on our side we would have certainly walked straight back out and gone and booked elsewhere. The original room we were checked into was smokey, foisty, hard bed, dirty bathroom, infact dirty overall. If there was something less than one star, this hotel would have received the rating. I grew up in Coventry, and went to quite a few function there back in the 70's and 80's. They did a good job back then. How things have changed. I checked in Friday for 3 days. Listed below are just a few of things I can remember 1. The toilet would not work properly. I stayed at the Hylands for 1 night. I booked through Best Western website and got best rate of £55 for a twin. The hotel has plenty of parking and is definitely no more than a 5 minute walk from the train station and up to 10minute walk to reach the city centre. Check in was a bit problematic. As a previous reviewer experienced, the hotel had trouble finding my booking and when they did they had got my name, room type and room rate wrong! A friendly hotel with reasonable prices on the main route from Coventry to University of Warwick. Less than a five minute walk from the rail station in Coventry and handy for the city centre. Ask for a room at the back if you want a very quiet room, but the double glazing means any room should be OK. Breakfast is good with a selection of cereals, yoghurts and the usual fry-up. Staff are friendly and keen to please. Worth giving it a try.

I totally agree with previous reviewers - this place is dingy beyond belief! Hardly anything in the room worked correctly and the staff seemed unable or unwilling to do anything about it. Not a drop of hot water to be found. By the way, this hotel is NOT next door to the station but a 10 minute walk!!! This hotel needs a fortune spending on it to bring it into the 21st century. It's clearly had nothing spent on it for decades. There are so many better places to stay in Coventry. I urge you to try to book every one.... more

This place is really quite dingy. It hasn't has any major work done for at least 20 years and looks shabby. The room was functional and that's about the best I can say. The TV only received one channel - and that was very poor. The shower was cold. The tea cups were not washed properly. The walls between the rooms are so thin you could hear every word your neighbour was saying. Breakfast - which is a further £9.50 they don't tell you until you check out - was basic and chaotic.
