Beautiful place by Heidimauve
10 / 10

I stayed at this hotel for two nights on a business trip and thought it was wonderful! The weather was gorgeous which obviously helped but the grounds were beautiful, food was excellent and the staff were attentive and helpful and extremely professional even at 2 am when a crowd of us were still up chatting!

My room was a little old fashioned and, as other reviewers have mentioned, the bathroom could have been nicer but it was spotless and comfortable and I have no complaints about that.

My only disappointment was the practically raw porridge that I was served 20 mins late in my room one morning and I didn't get a decent cup of coffee during the three days I was there! It tasted like dishwater despite being served nicely!

I also understand that there were a few minor problems with our room bookings and the conference organisers had to stamp their feet a little to get what they'd booked but from an attendee point of view, it was a lovely place to stay.

I may even take my husband there at some point for a romantic weekend!

Mixed Feelings by atg1

Hotel from the outside is wonderful, beautiful grounds and woodland to walk in.The Reception desk is tiny and there was a queue of people checking in when we arrived, then our room was not ready,we waited about ages before it was.The room itself was very ordinary with a view of a brick wall and the carpet needed a good clean,Hospitality tray was very sparse, enough tea and coffee for one cup each,no sherry as advertised. We used the gym and pool, both are extremely small, luckily only a few people were using it.We ate dinner in the Terrace Room and the food was excellent, there were several families with very young children eating and the noise was horrendous, breakfast was excellent as well.We enjoyed our stay but didnt think it as good a Hotel as some of the reviews suggest.

Lovely but need updating in places by SJS22
8 / 10

I recently stayed in this hotel overnight with my other half and thought it was beautiful. It is set way back from the main road in fantastic grounds, with a woodland walk and it's own par3 golf course. We were lucky enough to have great weather during our stay and so spent a good few hours walking through the grounds. The swimming pool was lovely although avoid mid afternoons unless you want to be jumped on by several screaming children! We ate in the Terrace restaurant as I don't eat meat so it offered more choice than the more formal Bridge restaurant. The atmosphere was lovely and we enjoyed a drink outside on the terrace before eating. The food was faultless as was the service and particularly of note was the sharing platter of desserts which was a plate of miniature versions of 5 of the puddings on the menu, amazing! We relaxed in the lounge for coffee afterwards before turning in.

The only (very minor) things that I would improve are mainly in terms of the room itself. Whilst it was very clean and quiet (away from the wedding that was taking place), it could perhaps do with some modernisation. I loved the wooden furnishings but things like the chairs and wallpaper were a little shabby and some of the tiling in the bathroom was cracked in places. The bed was very comfortable though and there was a personalised welcome letter which was very helpful.

You can have breakfast in either of the 2 restaurants although it makes no difference to what you get. Good choice of hot meal options but I have to say we found the buffet a little disappointing and sparse. Also we had to prompt the staff for tea/coffee and toast a couple of times.

The front desk check-in wasn't perfect as there is one tiny table behind which there were 2 members of staff talking over each other's shoulders to serve people and it did seem to take longer than necessary, and we weren't offered help with our bags which the couple in front of us were.

Minor points only though that didn't ruin our enjoyment of an otherwise really great hotel.

DISAPPOINTED by Whitemouse
6 / 10

Although this was a business trip I was really looking forward to staying at this historic hotel and I had high expectations, especially having read previous reviews and having been made aware of its reputation. Disappointingly I felt it didn't live up to this.... My room (36) was very dark and dreary. I expected a more 'quality' feel and higher standards. There was a musty smell and a shabby feel to it. I think it could have retained its tradiitonal look by modern twists and better lighting. The bathroom was clean with plenty good quality towels on a heated towel rail, but it had a chipped bath with a basic shower attachment and an average feel. There was no trouser press or radio/alarm clock - although an iron and board were supplied. There were no robes or slippers. The bed was large and comfortable. The room generally was not very welcoming with a poor view. The food was good quality, although a colleague sent their breakfast back and ohers complained of it being cold. I found the staff to be quite indifferent in their approach and not that friendly. The look of the Hotel, a moated 12th century manor house would be ideal for photogaphs for a special occasion and there were nice walks around the grounds. Beyond that the area around the hotel was not that special. The health club (seperate building) had a much more quality feel to it. This is not suitable as a business hotel and they seemed ill prepared for our arrival. I would suggest it is more suitable for a romantic week-end away. However, from my experience and having seen the other reviews, I would recommend you booking a suite or ensure you have a better standard room and then you may not be as dissapointed as I was.

Medieval castle - magnificent, if a little faded in places by karasch
10 / 10

New Hall looks just like a little castle from the outside. It has a medieval pedigree and a moat to match. The property sits deep within forest and ponded parks with ducks aplenty.

Inside, the hotel is a warren of rooms, hallways and stairs, decorated in a tasteful mix of Victorian-style furniture in rooms with definite medieval origins. Exposed beams, dark wood panelling, grand fireplaces, deep armchairs, the little semi-hidden door under the stairs. It's rich with history, and a few prints on the walls give you an insight into the property's past as the manor of a medieval alchemist.

We stayed for one night in a junior suite. When we arrived, the receptionist (very professional, if a little cool) advised us our room wasn't ready, so we had lunch outside in the cafe garden. The food was excellent although a little pricey. We were hooked, and committed to dinner at the hotel that night. New Hall chips will likely be forever our benchmark. The surroundings were lovely, overlooking the gardens, bridge and moat.

Unfortunately, there's no official source of help with luggage, but a very helpful passing staff member saw us struggling to get our load up the stairs and jumped in to assist. There are no lifts, and we had three flights of stairs to deal with.

Our junior suite was amazing. We were right in the middle of the castle on the top floor in a large loft room. The room was so big, you could actually work up a full stretch sprint running from the door to the main window. We had windows on three sides, with the main overlooking the entrance. The room was furnished in an eclectic antique style, but some pieces seemed like '50s updates. Great, comfy couches with cushions embroidered with a dedication to the Prince of Wales. We also had a table and chairs, minibar, drawers, iron and fluffy bathrobes. The tv was pretty good, with up to date pay per view movies; a welcome relief to us after a spate of whirlwind travelling. The room was very comfortable, and although it felt a little faded and old, it was well-maintained. I couldn't place if the bathroom was from the '50s or the '70s, but it had a little interconnecting door which gets a bit disconcerting when you can hear slow footsteps on the other side. The bed was great for size and comfort, and the sheets were pristine clean, but the bedding itself was musty. Still, we loved it. The room was grand, faded, clean, aged and just perfect for pretending you're some minor lord on a guest weekend in days gone by.

The room service food was excellent quality (although expensive to my thinking at 70 pounds for 2 x steak, chips, salad and a soft drink), the service was always prompt and helpful and usually very friendly. We enjoyed the full english breakfast that was part of our tariff. The food was faultless. The room rate is extraordinarily cheap for the experience, although the food cost certainly levels the field a bit. This will be one of our most positively memorable hotel stays anywhere.

Another Great Hand Picked Hotel by HarleneQ
8 / 10

We stayed at New Hall for two nights in July to celebrate our 2nd Wedding Anniversary. We had got engaged at another 'Hand Picked' hotel, Ettington Park, so had expectations of our first stay at New Hall and we weren't disapointed.

The hotel itself is very impressive, complete with a moat which fully encircles the building. The grounds are extensive (including

golf course, woodland walk and a walled rose garden) and provides a great post-dinner walk. The hotel spa has a well equipped gym, swimming pool and offers beauty treatments (need to be booked in advance as they get quite busy).

Our 'room' was the Princess Elizabeth Suite which actually comprised of four rooms; a large lounge, dressing area, bedroom and bathroom. The suite was large (taking up one of the wings) and well equipped and furnished, though a couple of the carpets are a little faded/stained and could be cleaned/replaced. The bed was very comfortable and room felt very cosy and light. There was free WiFi access though the strength was poor and varied depending on the position in the room.

There are two restaurants: The Terrace Room restaurant was quite informal but the food was well cooked and presented. The portions are a good size and choice ranged from locally made Bangers and Mash with Onion Gravy to Sea Bass with Chorizo and Chickpeas. If you want a special dinner though I would recommend eating in the Bridge Restaurant. It is a more formal dining experience and provides a romantic setting with beautifully presented food, stained glass windows, silver cutlery and excellent service. In all we had six courses including canapes whilst reading the menu, 'amuse bouche' (small beetroot and smoked ham jelly), starters, main course, pre-pudding dessert (small lavender mousse), and dessert. The food was imaginative (first time I've heard of avocado sorbet - delicious with the crab!) and eye-catching!

We'll certainly be going back again!

Fantastic Hotel by denyse86
10 / 10

The New Hall hotel and spa is well worth a visit. We originally picked this hotel due to its close proximity to the Tamworth Snowdome where my boyfriend had booked a lesson, however we now plan to retrun to the hotel solely for a relaxing break.

The staff at the hotel are excellent, especially those in the terrace restaurant who are extremely attentive and offer excellent customer service.

The food was also excellent and I was really impressed with the choice on offer with our "dinner, bed and breakfast" package.

This hotel exceeded our expectations and we will certainly be going back for another stay (also to collect my hairdryer which I left in our very clean and spacious room)

Wonderful Hotel by mangolady
10 / 10

Stayed for a romantic break end of May, and must say that out of the many Handpicked Hotels we have visited this was the best by far.

We were greated by friendly helpful staff, checked in and shown to our room quickly and efficently.

Prebooked the table for dinner prior to arrival as we were adivsed that it does get very busy.

Took advantage of swimming pool, sauna, and steam room, really relaxing.

Great walks around the gardens, mini lake accomodating ducks and swans.

You would never beleive that you are on the outskits of a large city, it was like being miles away in the country.

Had a little concern as there was a wedding party due to arrive, but was reassured that this would not have any effect on the other guests in the hotel. There is a fantastic marque in the grounds equipped with all that the wedding party would require, we hardly saw any of the wedding guests at all.

Food was really good from snacks to a la carte resturant and breakfast, not even thinking about the calorie intake!!!

If you are looking for a quiet, intimate, romantic place to stay for a weekend this is the one for you - loved it.

One of the best Friday nights I have ever had! by flbrit
10 / 10

One of the best Friday night's I have ever had! A Fantastic building in a sublime location, wonderful food and excellent service, it was perfect.

The above paragraph says it all really but if you would like to know more about my stay then please read on

Having spent all week staying in a London hotel, all I wanted to do when I got back on Friday night was to stay at home for the entire weekend and not leave the house. My lazy plans were foiled when I got home to my girlfriend and was greeted with an already packed suitcase and an "I thought it would be nice to go out for dinner and stay overnight"

I didn't really feel like it but went with a smile as she had obviously put in lots of effort and it was a nice surprise.

At around 7.15pm we pulled into the long driveway and saw in the distance a very picturesque building lit with soft floodlights, it looked great. The reception staff were very friendly and checked us in efficiently whilst explaining opening hours for all the facilities.

The suite we stayed in (room 56) was amazing, large open sitting area, separate large bedroom and en-suite bathroom. 2 televisions, lots of antique furniture and a wonderful view over the moat at the back of the hotel. There was a small glass pot of homemade biscuits and a decanter of Sherry waiting for us on the table, perfect to set up a small nap before dinner!

We made our way to the Terrace Restaurant for dinner where we were greeted by very friendly staff who sat us down to allow us time to browse the extensive wine list and choose what we would like to eat. We had a bottle of South African Merlot which was very nice and reasonably priced. Dinner was excellent; I had Eggs Florentine and Sirloin steak which was perfectly cooked. My girlfriend had a goat's cheese starter and then organic cod for a main course. The atmosphere was very relaxed and after the second bottle of red we retired for the evening.

Breakfast was equally nice with a choice of cooked and/or continental. After checkout we had a walk round the grounds and had a peak at the leisure facilities.

I don't know how much the bill was as my girlfriend paid but I do know that it was one of the best Friday nights I have ever had and completely not what I expected. All in all a perfect end to the week and an even better way to start the weekend, I would recommend this hotel to anybody and it will certainly leave you wishing you were staying another night.

I would like to thank all the staff who made our stay so enjoyable and in particular a very cheerful duty manager who introduced himself as 'Matty'.

I have never written a review before so didn't really know how to structure it, the best way I thought was to describe the stay as I remembered it, hope it helps.

Sean
