Wonderful stay in Jesmond Dene
My husband I booked a night in this hotel in July to attend my daughter's graduation. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and were impressed by the comfort of the hotel and the friendliness of the staff. Our room was small but fine for our needs with a lovely view across the terrace and out towards the dene. We were blessed with very hot weather and enjoyed cool drinks on the terrace and a pleasant walk in the wooded Dene. Our evening meal was superb, especially ,if like us you enjoy seafood. The atmosphere was very relaxed and welcoming... more
Good food, good atmosphere and worth a try.
We stayed at this hotel for one night recently on a package that included a meal with jazz/swing style music and dancing to follow. Previously, we have dined here but not stayed over. The hotel is an interesting and impressive old building on the edge of Jesmond Dene. The surrounding area is quiet, very leafy and affluent yet a short taxi ride will take you into the city centre. For us, the food was good (new British style) although portions could have been a little more generous. Service was attentive and the evening was very... more
Jesmond Dene House - not quite a home.
My partner and I booked into one of the suites in this hotel, having requested a quiet room, but were somewhat disappointed by the noise coming from below after dinner - apparently a 21st birthday was being thrown downstairs. Dinner was okay in that the food was good, but the service was poor. The wrong main course was brought out , it can happen. The wine waiter seemed more intent on filling our glasses to the brim in an apparent effort to sell another bottle of wine. I also felt that the whole experience was somewhat rushed, in that... more
wonderful 21st birthday treat
I have dined at JHD on 2 previous occassions and decided to go back for our youngest sons 21st birthday. The evening was warm and balmy (strange indeed for the north east even in summer) our table was in the conservatory, but we could have dined outdoors in the garden if we wished...which is very relaxed...but we decided to stay indoors. The menu had a lovely summer feel to it, lots of fish and summer vegetables, I had a broad bean and pea risotto for a starter which was perfect for such a night, light and packed with flavour. The wines... more
Very disappointed
We went to Jesmond Dene House for our wedding anniversary and had been really looking forward to it. It was a Sunday night, and we walked up to the beautiful house to a very frosty welcome. We had booked the table for 8 pm but arrived at about 7 pm for a drink and were harrassed (every 15 minutes or so) to ask if we had chosen our meal. The service was surly, and unfriendly. We eventually went through, and had a very disappointing meal, the lobster ravioli was completely tasteless, the main courses were acceptable but overpriced, and the... more
Substance above style
Jesmond Dene House Hotel, Newcastle Upon Tyne . Every now and then we experience something that stays with us vividly for days after. As we get on with our day-to-day lives there is a process of revisiting the experience and testing it against what was felt at the time. This is what I have been doing after our visit to JDH. Let me nail my colours to the mast, my wife and I had a wonderful visit to Newcastle and what set that visit was our stay our stay at the hotel. It is not just that the integration of the new architecture with the old is... more
cool place in a cool city
If you are coming to Newcstle or the north east , this is the place to stay. It has a rural feel in an urban setting. It blends a cool modernism with its Victorian heritage. It is defined by its innate sense of place, especially in its use of local produce in its excellent restaurant. But what makes it really tick is the sense of mission , from its expert management to its unfailingly friendly and helpful staff. a multi-national team that makes the stay so much more enjoyable.
What a way to enjoy your anniversary
Because our daughter is studying in Newcastle we have made many visits and stayed mostly in Jurys which we have never had any complaints about. This time though our visit to collect our daughter coincided with our wedding anniversary and we decided to indulge in a little luxury and pampering. Let me just say our choice was based on the many excellent reviews the Jesmond Dene House hotel had on this website. OH Boy!! we were not disappointed. From the moment we stepped through the door we were made to feel like royalty the reception... more
Disappointing experience
My wife and I stayed at the hotel on a Saturday night whilst visiting our daughter in Newcastle. I had read excellent reviews of the hotel and restaurant but have to report that I was disappointed with the experience. The room (a deluxe double on the ground floor - £195 per night)) was smaller than I expected, airless and stuffy and affected by noise from above and from outside. Dinner in the restaurant was adequate but not worth the premium prices (£215 for 3 starters, 3 mains, 1sweet and 1 coffee plus 1 bottle of chilean red - £69 for a... more
Fabulous overnight stay
Coming from Germany and visiting friends in the north east of England, my girlfriend and I had an overnight stay at Jesmond Dene House. I heard about the excellence of this hotel and because I know that my girlfriend loves good quality hotels I asked a friend to make a booking for us. To make it short: Both of us were stunned! We had a really lovely room at the rear of the hotel with a wonderful view over the Dene. The style of the room and the whole building is excellent in any detail. My girlfriend loved the generous bathroom and the... more
