time warp
I have just got back from Newcastle. We drove back home rather than stay in a time warp. My husband had to go to Newcastle on business so we thought we would make a weekend of it. I went direct to the hotel. Arrived there about 12.30.I walked in and was told I had been upgraded to a suite. How lucky! (Not) I walked through a beautiful bar; restaurant and reception imagined the room to look like the picture on the web site. NOT AT ALL. On leaving the reception I walked into a time warp. I went from oak. Slate and chrome to dirty carpets... more
Does the job, no frills
This hotel is fine - does what it says on the tin. Based in a nice area. Rooms are a good size and clean and tidy. Some of the function room areas are a bit worn, but again, do the job. Superb full english breakfast. No probs with booking, but ring around for best price - I found the best one going direct to them. Good bar directly across the road - great happy 'hour', about 5 - 7pm!
Had a Great time
I stayed there from friday to sunday with a group of friends. Had a great time, Friendly staff and clean rooms. The walk was long to newcastle, but a taxi into newcastle was just 5 pound and the metro is just 1 pound.
Another problem with their reservation system
We also turned up to find out our confirmed hotel room had not actually been reserved by them and by accident they had given the room to someone else!! Despite having the confirmation email the staff refused to admit that it was their responsibility and left us sat in reception and did nothing to try and find an alternative. Another guest took pity on us and gave us a list of other hotels to call through in the area. Very rude and unpleasant staff that totally ruined my weekend. Definitely would not recommend it to anyone Anna from London
Satisfactory
This hotel was OK for the 2 nights I spent there, room was clean and reasonably spacious. Buffet breakfast. Staff friendly. Would go there again without any concerns.
how rude
we visited this hotel as three rooms of two booked in december. the rooms were confirmed two days before and off we went. We arrived having booked three rooms and couldnt get parking for one car. At the check=in desk they only had two rooms for us, we said we didnt mind, as we got to the rooms we had a room with two doble beds and one with two singles. This ended up with four of us in a room. NO MONEY BACK OR COMPENSATION HOW RUDE. All i can say is take that were great. wouldnt stay here again.
Just the job
We have just returned from a wonderful weekend at this hotel. Pleasant 15 min walk into Newcastle. Nice area. Easy parking. Comfortable room. Lovely and warm. We didn't have breakfast or a meal at the hotel but it was a perfect hotel for a weekend break.
Drafty
Windows are drafty and don't shut properly. Lift is ancient. Ironing board in rooms, Sky Sports in rooms, and in an overall tidy condition. Compared with some hotels on this site, this should be a 5 star. Restaurant staff very accommodating, overhearing me say I had a Black pudding missing from my breakfast and within minutes one appearing at my table. Nice location. Would stay here again but only because there appears to be very little better in the area.
Location Fine, but ...
Was frozen for the first 2 nights of a 5 night stay. (Felt damp) Heat not on and the staff couldn't get it to work. Only one power socket in the room (so extra heater and charging one's phone couldn't be done simultaneously). Took lift with one other person, so small bumping against each other (and no neither party was huge). Wireless internet mentioned on some websites was only accessible in the lobby and not even then. It was picked up, but the signal was too weak to open anything. Hotel was ok if you wanted music and location.... more
Thumbs UP!
We stayed at the Caledonian with a group of friends last September. The staff were friendly and helpful, the parking was safe for the night, the room was clean but basic and the restaurant had fairly good bar food. However seeing as for most a visit to Newcastle is about socialising and getting out and about, I can't fault this hotel, the location is great right in the heart of the trendy part of the city - Jesmond, the strip of hotels and restaurants that this place is on is like being in a foreign country when the sun shines and the city... more
