Thistle Hotel London Gatwick

Ignore previous reports Stopped at the hotel for one night in Feb 08. Found that the hotel s halfway through a refurbishment. Room was newly refurbished bedding was new. Parking and transfer to airport was good. Restaurant was shut for refurbishment so we ate in the pub which whist not great was ok

I found the hotel staff very helpful, the hotel was reasonably clean and the pub, restaurante and shuttle were all convenient. The real time flight screen information was also very useful.The hotel provides an excellent choice of magazines for guests. All in all, the convenience provided for travellers were excellent. However, the hotel needs rennovating, the decor is tacky and the spider remnants on the walls were not very reassuring. The yard is badly in need of a face lift and creates an unfairly dodgy image. Coldest day of the year, and the room is very very very hot, with the raidator switched off. Window is broken, curtans are broken, and don't cover the window, room is otherwise OK. Walls are way way way to thin, give me a travelinn any day. Watch out for the car park, 6 quid for 24 hours sounds OK, till you need to go in and out a few times in a day. Sandwich on room service is 6.50, think I am going to 24 hour supermarket over the road.

The good: Great location to airport, 24 hour store opposite that sells practically everything, speedy check-in, very helpful and friendly staff, excellent shuttle service, within walking distance to pubs and town centre. Pub and restaurant on site. The bad: The hotel needs a total renovation and is very rundown throughout. Carpets are taped if not showing worn areas, paint work peeling and flaking in many places, creaky doors. I agree with the post from Corpus Christy Texas (Actually it was written the same date I stayed at the Thistle). I too, booked on Priceline as was a bit afraid after reading the posts that it was "a dump". I was prepared for the worst. Actually, we felt good about the hotel. It was only one night for a layover but the bed was comfortable, the room was clean, the hotel restaurant staff stayed open late for us since we arrived almost 9:00 pm and hadn't eaten. We had stayed at Thistle Hotels before and were dissappointed to learn that it had changed hands after booking. The place was very rundown and needs a lot of TLC. Would not recomend it, only thing going for 10mins from Gatwick.

There has been a change in ownership quite recently. I bid on Priceline in July and got the Thistle London Gatwick. I wasn't too pleased but the price was 104 US$ total , so I cannot be too critical! After spending large sums of Euros for hotels on our 5 week trip, the room looked o.k. for the price. We arrived after dark and left early in the a.m. We were able to make tea/coffee/chocolate in the room before going to airport for flight home. gone downhill since we stayed a year ago when it was the thistle the first room was on the ground floor next to a very noisy generator and the window would not shut i was afraid that someone could enter in the night also the security risks to our luggage 2nd room not noisy,on the second floor but still window shutters broken, cobwebs all at topof curtains complete with resident spiders. bathroom washbasin blocked so had to clean teeth at speed because overflow was blocked too, bath rust marks all in all in need of a thorough clean and repair

Have stayed at this hotel a few years ago but now it is just awful and will not stay there again! When we checked in the receptionist acted as if she was doing us a favour - lots of sighing and messing around with the computer. Had to wait for a young guy to show her how it worked and then they tried to charge our card twice for the room - until I told them it was already paid for through Holiday Extras!! Ok so we stayed here for one night before a long haul flight the next day. We arrived about 3pm. checked in with the rudest receptionist ive seen, booked the car in for the 15days parking and went to the room. The rooms were an ok size, smelt DISGUSTING, bathroom was horrible with exposed pipes, dirty bath etc. did not feel clean But not ones to moan (as we were only there one night) we left our suitcases and went to the bar for drinks and food.
