Dunraven Arms Hotel

My wife and I have stayed in the Dunraven Arms five or six times in recent years. The rooms in the new section are very well appointed and the old section is charming. The staff members have always been friendly and the restaurant food excellent. I have just booked for August this year.

My husband and I took a golf vacation in Ireland and stayed at the Dunraven Arms for three nights. It was a wonderful experience. Our room was enormous and faced the beautiful flower gardens. We enjoyed a deliciious Irish breakfast and set out to golf at Ballybunion. We were surprised that it only took 90 minutes to get there. After a "challenging" day of golf we retruned to the Dunraven and were welcomed by the very attentive staff. We stayed at the Dunraven Arms for a family wedding taking place nearby. Our party consisted of myself and my husband, and my mother & aunt. Our rooms were both good sized, nicely decorated, and very comfortable. Bathrooms very spacious & clean. Most of the staff was Eastern European, with some of the housekeeping & room service staff having limited English skills, which led to a few minor bits of confusion, but all handled graciously & quickly sorted out. This hotel was once possibly an interesting place but it now has real problems. The additional 'new' rooms are so badly done with paint splatters, crooked fixtures, with cracks and gaps and 2 tiles fell off in the bathroom. Standard of finish is bad amateur. The pool was booked out for swimming lessons for twenty or so local children, and was also used by locals as a health club. We had just come from a fab night in SAS Radisson Galway, so there was a lot to live up to. We had to book a junior suite, so we were looking forward to something a little special. Reception failed to warn us that they had a hunt ball on and hotel was extremely busy. Room was large but basic. Bathroom was really nothing special. No tea/coffee making facility in room. My parents, wife and I were completing a whirlwind tour of southern Ireland and found this hotel well situated for one of our stops. I am not sure that we enjoyed the same experience as others have written, perhaps because the hotel had a wedding reception that evening and I believe they were a little overrun with the number of guests and related activity. The Dunraven is one of the oldest hotels in Ireland from what I understand and at one time it seemed to have been a road stop... you can imagine where folks rode up on their horse(s)... more
