Avoid this place unless you are desperate
I stayed in room 21, which is directly above the front door, which slams shut unless the person entering/exiting is kind enough to catch it. They made me pay up front, before I had seen the room, and there is a lengthy list in the room of charges they will place on your credit card should anything in the room disappear or be damaged, which should tell you something about the clientèle they usual have. There are pubs everywhere on this street - pack earplugs if you want to sleep. Breakfast is stingy - toast, fruit and yogurt, but they get... more
Yuck!
The noise here was incredible, not only from the club, but also from the street. I had to book-in and collect my key from the bar in the club where I couldn't hear them and they couldn't hear me! The room wasn't anything to write home about and it needed to be because when you're awake all night you need to feel comfortable and have something nice to look at. I missed breakfast because I couldn't bear to stay a minute longer than I had to and went off to a very nice cafe where people could a) hear me b)give me the time of day
fantastic location and very friendly staff
just got back from staying 3 nights in oxford at the victoria house hotel, the room was clean and modern with private facilities. the hotel is in a fantastic location opposite theatres, cinemas, and bella italia, and there is a fantastic chinese resteraunt down some steps just next door but one. didnt here any noise at all from the night club, but i was at the back of the hotel, so i wasnt disturbed at all only downside was a continental breakfast only dispite the site offering 3 different types of breakfasts would definitely... more
Too Hot and Noisy!
Stayed here for 1 night in June. Room was clean and tidy - a little dated but served its purpose. However, it was a very hot day and the heat in the room was unbearable! Due to the busy street below it was impossible to open the window as the noise carried on throughout the night. There is a cafe bar on the ground floor of the building and despite being on the third floor I was able to sing along to the songs they were playing as I tried to sleep! Breakfast is in a lebanese cafe next door - only croissants, toast and juice but not too... more
good location, friedly stuff, small but very clean rooms
The rooms are very small but very clean, they serve only continental breakfast. Perfect location, very close to colleges and museums. If you want to stay in the city centre, in a clean place, this is the perfect location.
Totally overprized, very noisy, not clean, no proper breakfast
I booked a single room in this hotel in January 2005 for my holliday in july via hrs. It should cost 70 Pounds. 6 Weeks before (!), they had found out, that they didn't have a free single room any more and that I could only get a double room for 79 Pounds. So obviously you can't trust them too much. I took the room nevertheless, but it was by far not worth the money. The room was okay but very noisy because in a very busy street and above a disco. You had music untill late in the morning and I could only sleep with earmuffles. In the shower... more
Use this as a last resort
We did not even stay in the hotel- turned & walked out as soon as we saw the room. It was a very hot day & the rooms were tiny & stuffy- right over the restaurant belonging to the hotel & above the "cocktail bar" which stayed open until 2am. The street was very noisy & it would have been impossible to sleep with the windows open & there was no air con. Be warned also that reception closes from 8pm-8am so if you arrive after that you have to call a number to check in & there is nobody there should anything go wrong or be a problem.<br... more
Noisy and basic
I stayed in the Victoria House Hotel in July, it was a mistake! It would have been better to have stayed further out from the centre of Oxford. George Street is a hopelessly noisy location - especially on a hot night when the street is full late into the night and the choice is no air or more noise with an open window. The room was basic and functional, not what one would expect for the price. Breakfast - basic and delivered on a tray to your room in the morning, the room is hardly big enough to cope with a trayand not what I expected... more
