Royal Oxford Hotel Reviews

Stayed in Royal Oxford Hotel for one night only. The pictures of this hotel make it look as if it is in its own grounds. It is most definitely not, it stands on the corner of a five-way junction which makes it noisy all night long. The rooms only have secondary double... more

Good location
Having arrived in Oxford at night we were glad to find the hotel was within a five minutes walk from the bus station. The hotel is an older building that has been refurbished in parts like the reception. Our room was on the second floor facing the back. We were not affected by traffic noise because the windows remained closed at night. The beds were very comfortable and the bedroom and bathroom were clean. Hotels in Oxford seem to be quite pricey for what you get compared to other UK cities I've stayed in. If I were in Oxford again I definitely would stay in this hotel due to its proximity to the bus station and the scarcity of taxis. However, I would request a room at the back because the hotel is located at a busy intersection but that can't be helped.
Never again
We stayed one night with our 15 years teen in a family room, too much expensive room for what we've got. The room was basic and really really noisy cause the hotel is located at a major road junction and had no air conditioning system. In July, with the windows open at night, sleeping was impossible. Fortunatly, the night receptionist was friendly and leave us spend a part of the night sitting in the lobby which has air conditioned and the breakfast, next morning was perfect. Major point, one person at the reception was arrogant and agressive. This situation almost destroy my pleasure to stay in Oxford, my favourite city in England. So, no, we’ll never be back.
Avoid
The noisiest hotel I have ever stayed at.We got very little sleep. Why ? It's built in the middle of a traffic junction and Oxford is a busy town.It was a hot summer's night and we had to open the windows. We cannot understand why the management have not addressed this fundamental problem by means of an airconditioning system - in any other country with a hotel in this price category you would find this. The windows did have double-glazing but this was obviously useless against the noise with the windows open. The staff at Reception didn't care. Never again.
OK
One block or so from train station. Three or four blocks to central bus depot. 10 minute walk to city central (High and Cornmarket area). The location is very good for visitors. No elevators we could find, so walk to second floor was a bit arduous with our luggage. Lobby small with a couple couches. Attached restaurant okay, but we only had continental breakfast there (included in our room rate, but not in all). All in all, a rather unremarkable but clean and tidy, older place. Staff was friendly and helpful enough. It was a Friday and Saturday night, but quiet. Bedroom and modern bathroom large and nice, comfortable. Seemed overly expensive to me, but all of Oxford seems that way to this poor American. I'd stay again if only in town a day or two; it's just too handy a location. The neighborhood isn't very exciting, but other options seemed even more expensive.
Pleasantly surprised
Our stay at this hotel did not disappoint. The rooms were very clean, the bathroom was spacious and spotless, the service was pleasant and obliging and the location was convenient (easy to drop off bags from the train station). We were within easy walking distance from the centre of town and the new Oxford Castle development is virtually around the corner. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a simple room at a reasonable rate.
smart oasis near train station
Just returned from a 4 night stay at the Royal Oxford Hotel. My twin room was wonderful- comfortable beds (not too firm nor too soft), and terribly convenient to both the rail and bus stations. A short walk to town, very helpful staff, and fresh fruit in the room were bonuses. I had requested a quiet room, having stayed in Oxford several times before and been bothered by the bus noise. I was given an inward-facing room- very quiet and private. There is no lift, so beware if you have heavy bags, but the staff is more than willing to carry for you. Breakfast was not included in the price of my room, but at 11 pounds, you can wander into town and grab a bite for 2. I was offered a 15% discount at Wollensky's restaurant (upscale) which is attached to the hotel. I am actually booking there again for my return in April.
Poor value for money despite great location and being clean
I spend a night at this hotel early november. We needed a hotel very close to the railway station, which was the reason why we chose for this hotel. The location is the hotel's saving grace. The hotel + rooms are clean, but very basic and small. There were some cracks in walls and broken tiles, but nothing shocking. All rooms have (wireless) internet. The website would indicate a higher degree of luxury (not that we required that but maybe other readers do) than the hotel actually had. Basic and decent... but for basic and decent out of the season, they ask very high prices... poor value for money. Mind you, we booked this room through Expedia. Apparantly that price does not include breakfast (while the price on the website does), so add another 10 pounds per breakfast per day...
not too bad
I agree with most of the existing reviews about this hotel. Those who expected very little were not unhappy, but most people think the place is overpriced but conveniently placed. We stayed here for two nights. The room was very clean and although it was a bit uninspired, it was ok and verything worked (hot water, bed was fine, etc). Free wireless internet is a plus. A minus point is paying 10 pounds extra per person per morning for breakfast (we bought our breakfast elsewhere so I can't say what the breakfast is like or if it is worth 10 pounds). A minus point is the noisy traffic outside. We had a room on the second floor, facing an extremely busy intersection, and we were a bit bothered by the noise, especially in the morning. A plus point is of course the location of the hotel, that is the reason they get away with the high price I suppose, it's just beside both the train and bus stations, and a convenient walk into the most central parts of the city. My verdict and tip for future guests: Do your homework and look for special deals on the Internet so you do not pay anything NEAR fullprice for a room (double room 120 pounds fullprice, we paid 90 I think). If you find a price that your budget can cope with, I would recommend that you stay at this hotel.
Good value
We stayed 4 nights at the Royal Oxford Hotel, immediately before the students returned. The location was very good, the room was good size and comfortable. There was a free, extremely stable wireless connection throughout the hotel. There is no air conditioning, which means that you sleep with the windows open. The outside street can be noisy, but it did not significantly interfere with our sleeping. The bathroom was fine, clean, modern with plenty of hot water. A lift (elevator) was not avaialable which was really only a problem when we checked in and checked out and needed to carry our luggage. If we visited Oxford again we would stay at the hotel since the price was excellent and the room was fine.
