Deer Park Hotel

We stayed at the Deer Park for 3 nights in January. The rooms were beautiful, the service was excellent, the food was very good and the location is just gorgeous. This is one of the nicest hotels we've stayed at. We were there with our 11 year old son and there were very few families staying at the time and none with children that age. We found the staff to be quite happy to include him in things and the person who staffed the pool area was always happy to throw a ball around with him. We stayed here on our honeymoon as part of a tour round Sri Lanka. Of the four hotels we stayed in, this was one of the best. The loaction in the jungle is one not to be missed. We had a suite with a private sundeck and magnificent view over the lake. Food was acceptable, although buffet style dinners. The tree-top restaurant was closed while we were there, but did promise to be something special. We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights at the beginning of December 2005. The drive from the airport took around 4 hours, which wasn’t a surprise, but it was tiring. On arrival we were given refreshing towels and ice tea. Check in was very swift and we were shown to our room. We were surprised to find that there weren’t safes in the rooms; instead these were lockers at reception. The room was spacious and the use of the “signature” colours of Angsana was very nice. We loved this hotel. We stayed here just s few weeks ago with our 2 sons age 7 & 9 and we stayed for a week. We flew Emirates (excellent) and stopped in Dubai for 5 nights on the way so the temperature in Sri Lanka was great compared to 46 degrees in Dubai!! Our transfer time from Colombo was around 6 hours - which sounded traumatic - but we had a fantastic guide/driver Joe who stopped at every interesting point and explained everfything to us - it was more of a guided tour than a transfer and we loved every minute. The drive to the hotel from Kandy took over 4 hours - it is an interesting trip although as with all road travel in Sri Lanka it is a hair raising experience. The remote location does impact on the quality of the food - we found all the meat dishes tough. The location, overlooking a lake, is spectacular and very quiet. We chose the presidential villa - well worth the extra to have an excellent private pool. Rooms huge with good AC (although it goes off when there is one of the frequent power cuts). What a fantastic hotel. After a long flight from Dubai (beware - if you fly emirates then you land for an hour in Maldives on way to pick up other passengers), and a 4hr drive from Columbo, this place was paradise! It was 5star from start to finish. All the staff were fantastic, especially George the Restaurant manager, the hotel manager Mr Ilkin Ilyaszadze, and Tintin the Tours Manager. We stayed at the Deetr Park for three nights. Our rooms (one for us, an identical one for our children) were beautifully furnished, large and comfortable. the one disappointment was the small bathrooms, with a very small bath. The open-fronted restuarant was comfortable, with excellent service. The evening buffets were a refereshing change form other hotels in which we'd stayed in Sri Lanka, with the empahasis on Sri Lankan food and just a modest number of Western alternatives.
