We went to the Newington for a valentine's treat, spent £87 for one double room for one night. The room was musty smelling and in serious need of renovation, the sink was in the bedroom, then just a shower cubicle, no bath and the toilet next to the shower!!!! We were not... more

Not as bad as some reviews, but....
First impressions were very promising - the reception staff were very welcoming and friendly, and they even let us check-in early, which was a bonus. We had a pleasant surprise with the size of our room, which had a double and two single beds (even though there was only 3 of us) .Very clean ,if a little dated (which actually suited the character of the hotel, and York). The bar area was ok, although it lacked some atmosphere (no music, TV, or anything going on - you could hear a pin drop!). Pool was small but clean, daughter loved it - although no changing facilities, hence running upstairs with just a towel round our particulars! We didnt try the sauna though, as it looked a little shabby downstairs. Breakfast was ok, although they ran out of knives and spoons by the time we ate! Location was a plus, only a 15 minute walk away from York centre, and no cost for parking. Overall, a reasonable hotel for our 1 night stay, if a bit expensive, but it seems York is a little pricey anyway.
Excellent
I totally disagree with all bad reviews about this hotel. It was beatiful. We had a triple room. It was immaculate. Service was excellent. Breakfast was good. Thanks for a brill stay.
A truly unpleasant experience
This is no hotel - it's a large B&B and a very poor, shabby one at that. I booked a double room for 85 pounds, which is quite expensive. The room was filthy. The toilet had excrement in it, everything was covered in a thick layer of dust and the carpet was grubby and stained. The sink was in the actual bedroom itself, integrated into the dressing table, complete with toothpaste stains and other 'matter' on the carpet surrounding it. The list of negatives goes on. The bed was only just about fit for purpose. My wife and I spent the whole night huddled in the middle because the bed was like sleeping in a trench. The main dressing table mirror looked like it was last cleaned in 1948, which is probably when the furniture was purchased judging by the flea-bitten state of it. Landlords furnish student bedsits with better stuff. The whole room looked like something out of 'How we used to live'. I complained and they were good enough to knock some money off the bill, but I wont be going back. I should have booked somewhere else. Actually, alarm bells rang when I phoned to book and the response to my question of "would it be possible to book a room please?" was a sarcastic "well, this is a hotel after all, so I should think that could be possible, yes." I nearly just put the phone down on him right there. Next time I will trust my first impression. Take my advice, avoid this place like the plague.
I Hate this hotel
I will never ever stay in this hotel again, fortunately i was only staying for 1 night but any longer and i would have asked for my deposit back and slept in a bus shelter. First off they gave me a smoking room when i asked for a non smoking and the room was stinking of smoke, but there were no other rooms available! The "bathroom" (or wardrobe - as it was that small!!!) was disgusting there were cobwebs and spiders in it, the bottom of the shower cubicle had a huge crack in it and it wasn't clean - it was meant to be blue (!) but it had yellow stains all over it - dread to think what they were!!! There were cobwebs between the bed and the wardrobe. The cup for the tea/coffee was dirty. Then about 6am i got woken up because i rolled over in my bed and got burnt by the radiator that was right next to the bed and on at about 150 degrees! I am in the process of making a complaint to the manager who wasn't there when i checked out and tried to make a complaint. This cost me £60 and if anyone is thinking about staying there - spend £10-£15 more and go and stay some place else. Breakfast was included in this prices but I can't even compliment that - it was just average.
very poor
My partner and I booked a four poster room for a romantic night away. For the money (£100+) it was very poor, small room, small bed , dirty bathroom, no hot water, no hair dryer, no iron, no mini bar. The jacuzzi was a joke. We were glad we didn't eat in the restaurant which is in the basement and very poorly presented. Stay somewhere else!
More to like than dislike
Just back from a short stay at the Newington. I read the previous reviews after booking so was a bit apprehensive prior to the trip. I needn't have worried; we paid about £70 a night for bed/breakfast/dinner - this is good value in York. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The location was good, although be prepared for a 15-20 min walk to the city centre (taxi fare £4-£5). The hotel seemed to attract a wide range of visitors but generally quiet couples and foreign tourists. On the negative side, yes the rooms do need updating (esp. the bathrooms) but generally they are clean and spacious. The food was very good (better than most). Yes, the food is served by young girls who aren't silver service trained (don't expect them to pour your wine and ask you to taste it !). You can stay in a more modern hotel (or B&B) but it might just be worse and you will pay double the price. Overall, a perfectly decent, quiet, good value hotel/B&B. I'll use it again
Not for a romantic weekend
Looking for weekend away for our 15 wedding anniversary I came across the Newington on the internet and it sounded very nice and something a bit special with a four poster and a Jacuzzi. When entering the room I was bitterly disappointed on the overall interior off the room. The four-poster was a three quarter divan bed with a wooden frame put round it made from 2x2 wood. The bathroom was like walking back into the 80s grey coloured suite with grey tiles and matching grey grout. Yes there was a Jacuzzi in there but not what I was looking for after spending £115 per night. The sealer around the bath was all coming off and generally the bathroom looked dirty. The plus side was the staff were very friendly, the breakfast was also very nice. My advice to anyone wanting to go to York is book the cheapest room in the Newington and spend the days in York because the location of the hotel is good
Happy to recommend
Having read the various reviews on this hotel we were not sure what to expect but were very pleased with what we found. OK, the bedroom wasn't the biggest, but it was clean and contained everything we needed. We ate in the restaurant on the first night and had no complaints with regard to the food. All the staff in the hotel were very friendly and helpful. We would certainly use this hotel again.
Nice Hotel decent price for York
Stayed here for two nights over the bank holiday weekend. Staff friendly and sorted out the requirements for us easily enough. Average price for this type of hotel in York, double room was lovely (room 100 or 102 - can't remember which!) Swimming pool and sauna an unexpected bonus. Dining room let hotel down as in basement - perfectly adequete but would have been nicer to have views of racecourse or mount vale road. Breakfast generous, didn't eat in resturant for evneing meal. However do note that booking is advisable for evening meal - served until 9pm but we arrived back late at 2 minutes to 9 and chef had left as no-one booked for after 8pm.
