We went to the Newington for a valentine's treat, spent £87 for one double room for one night. The room was musty smelling and in serious need of renovation, the sink was in the bedroom, then just a shower cubicle, no bath and the toilet next to the shower!!!! We were not very impressed for saying it was a romantic getaway!!! The hotel had no atmosphere nor many guests and was most uninviting, the only plus side was it was only a 10-15 minute walk into the centre so we spent most of our time out of the hotel. I did hear other guests moaning about their rooms so I dont think ours was a one off!!! Someone described it as a 60's hotel!! At least the sheets were clean but didnt dare look at the mattress!!! Tea making facilities were an ancient dusty kettle and a custard cream biscuit!!!
When we got through the night we only had breakfast to endure and that was an experience alone!! When we went into the restaurant it was full of dirty tables and pots from previous guests, we were seated at a table with the toast that belonged to the people before us!!! The waiters and waitresses constantly dropped plates on the floor and it was a right shamble!! Whilst we giggled when the woman on the next table had raw boiled eggs served, our poached ones on our breakfast weren't exactly cooked!!!! Stick to toast and tea if you have breakfast and cereal is fine as long as you get hold of some milk!!!
York is a lovely place and we found some lovely places to eat and drink, but choose your hotel wisely as it is part of the whole experience! One guest said to the receptionist upon leaving "see you next year"!!! he must have been paid to say that we will definitely go to the travelodge next time at least you know what you are getting!!!
And if you do york you must do the dungeons they were brilliant very funny couple of hours for the adults personally I wouldnt take the kids!!
