Beautiful views!
We stayed here for one night in December '06. Like some of the other travelers said, the hotel was very quiet and the weather was very bad on arrival. The drive up to the hotel is very bad as the roads are very steep and in very bad condition. Most of the tour guides will stop in the local village and call the hotel to come and pick you up as they have 4x4 because normal cars get damaged going up the hill with luggage and people in the back. The rooms were very basic and I’d agree are dated but the hotel was converted from an old tea... more
A wonderfully unique experience
What a wonderful setting for a hotel. Amongst the tea plantations and away from the bustle of Nuwara Eliya. The views from the hotel are outstanding and the climate is similar to UK summer due to the altitude. Yes, you can hear what's going on in the room above you (ask to stay on the top floor) but this all adds to the character of the place! We thought that the room was well furnished complete with tea making facilities. It was lovely to sit by the window and gaze at the tea plantations. The hotel retains many original... more
Great stop for a tour
We stayed here in Feb 2007. This hotel is ideal for a one night stay if you're on a tour of Sri Lanka. We arranged a private tour of the island and our driver dropped us at a train station near Kandy. We had reserved seats in the first class observation carriage at the back of the train which took us on a 4 hour, extremely interesting train journey through the mountains and tea plantations seeing all sorts of life on the way. We departed the train at Nana Oya and our driver was waiting for us with our bags as it only took him 2.5 hours by... more
The views?
Don't let the title put you off, the hotel is very nice, different but nice. Rooms were good, can't say great as you go for the views, we go two days thick mist and heavy rain. Can't blame the hotel for that. Restaurant was fine as was food, best breakfast on tour. Bar was very quite as hotel was almost empty but staff were friendly and the quickest service on the tour. If the views in the brochure is true the location would be fabulous, no reason to doubt it. If you get sun I can't see anything to fault (no pun intended).
The tea treat
Nuwara Eliya, the "little england" of Sri lanka. The neverending road to this hotel has been under construction for several years now: narrow turns, bumps, broken gravel.....but this should not deter you from climbing the tea filled hills to access one of the most surreal landscape in the country : your journey could start on the exotic shores of the indian ocean and end on a chilly terrasse sipping the finest ceylan amidst the thick fog. The hotel is actually located a little further up the hill from Nuwara Eliya and sits on a gentle... more
The Place to Stay in Nuwara Eliya
Definitely the place to stay when visiting the Nuwara Eliya Region. Kandapola (where the Tea Factory is situated) is a neighbouring suburb, ie not in the main town but high in the hills and among the tea plantations and rolling hills. This is where you want to be. Nuwara Eliya was good in it's time when the British first settled. The rooms are average and cold however this is the only negative thing I can say about the place. The Billiard room/bar area could do with heating or an open fire to make it mroe inviting for guests to hang out... more
Dated and disappointing
I went to this hotel with high expectations, but was rather disappointed. The setting and gardens are lovely, views beautiful and restaurants are reasonable but the bedrooms are very poor. The decor is more '80s than '00s. Think lime green upolstery fabric & chunky wooden furniture. No soundproofing so when the people above up woke at 5.00am, so did we. And I can tell you that the people in the room next to us made an early morning cup of tea - we could hear the cups clutter. It's likely that this problem is a result of the difficulty... more
Remarkable Hospitality! Tea Factory Style!!!
We just returned from a 15 tour of Maldives & Sri Lanka (May 2006) which included a 3 day stay at the Tea Factory. After having stayed for 3 days at Hotel Kandalama, Dambulla (superlative!) and Hotel Earl’s Regency (disappointing!) the Tea Factory was a pleasant experience. In fact, all these 3 hotels are part of the Aitken Spence Group of Hotels. Set in the picturesque hills of Nuwara Eliah around 6500 feet above sea level and surrounded by tea estates for miles together, it was a super experience. And compared to the furnace like... more
The Tea Factory
By far the best hotel we stayed at on our 14 day trip. Sadly we only booked for one night-has we known how wonderful it would be we would definitely have stayed longer, Nuwara Eliya itself is lovely and the view from the hotel is simply amazing. Felt like you are sitting in the clouds. Rooms are gorgeous and very old colonial feel about the place. Truly silent on that mountain so you feel you are so peaceful. Great food and service and the hotel itself was just oozing charm. Would recommend this hotel over and over. Was so sad to leave!
expensive for the independent tourist
We stayed at the Tea Factory Hotel for 3 nights as independent tourists cost was $190.00 for a double room per night. It came highly recommended, we were expecting something very luxurious at least 5 star for that price in Sri Lanka. It was very original and a truly beautiful setting amongst the tea estates fabulous views, good food etc. Not a 5 star though, the spa wasn't open, no pool available, lots of noise early in the morning and front desk could not arrange a driver and car for the next leg of our trip. Verdict: rip off price Aitken... more
