Great hotel
We stayed at Mahaweli for 2 nights (7th-8th Feb 2007) as part of a tour of Sri Lanka. The hotel was great with a lovely setting just outside the centre of Kandy on the Mahweli River. The grounds were very pretty and the pool a good size. The rooms were well appointed with a hairdryer in the bathroom and 2 UK style plug sockets. Adaptors were availabkle from reception. The bed was huge and very comfortable. The bathroom was a little "tired" but perfectly adequate and clean. Dinner was buffet style with a good choice of... more
Nice Stay
The Mahawali Reach was the first of three hotels we stayed in during a tour of Sri Lanka. The service at this hotel, I felt, was the best out of all the hotels we stayed in. The rooms are a bit tired and could do with a refurb, particulalry the bathrooms. The food was fine, not the best and certainly not the worst! The hotel is very well placed for visiting Kandy with its temples. We went to the Temple of the Tooth during a ceremony and it is well worth seeing this. On our final night our bed was decorated with flowers (the only... more

well what can i say after touring around the country on my own just lovely to have some peace , tranqulity and enjoyment . The staff were very helpful and friendly . would definetly stay there again and recommend anyone who is on their own to stay.what a gorgeous room i had
The heart of Sri lanka
The Mahaweli reach summarizes all what Sri Lanka has to offer: a refurbished colonial mansion amid the bursting faune and flora, exotic food (sri lankan food is even spicier than indian beware the "devilled dishes"), individualised service and a slow pace to enjoy all of it. Kandy is by far the most interesting town in Sri Lanka and if you happen to be in the Perahara period, you get to experience mystical dark nights filled with dancers and parades: people tend to be in a state of transe. The hotel staff get out of their way... more
Just OK
Stayed here for 5 nights. A lot of the rooms face a car parking area, so could be an idea to try and get one with a river view. Rooms are large but not 5 star quality (standard ones). Service on the whole was excellent, although we did have a bad experience on our first night. When my wife received the wrong food back, the waiter laughed at her and told her that he preferred the meal he had brought her!!!! That said, I feel it must have been the head waiters night off as the rest of the time he there and was excellent. Food was... more
Unbeatable service
First impressions on a busy weekend were shaky. The decor seemed tired and the bath badly chipped - in need of an upgrade. Perhaps we were tired after a long journey to Kandy. Breakfast showed the hotel in a better light with superb service from all - particularly 'Mahinda'. From that point on, the wonderful friendly service and relaxing location and simple effective style of the hotel came to the fore - to the point where the issues of concern faded into the background. All of the food was excellent. The hotel staff could... more
Excellant service
What can you say!! Ambience, quality, tranquilty are just a few superlatives that can be used. Stayed for 5 nights with my wife and two young children ( 3years and 21 months). The rooms were excellant and the attentive nature of the waiters and general staff was unbelievable. I came here ten years ago as a student and always yearned to return one day. What a decision. Went to the Earls Regency and found the service to be somewhat lacking. The food from the set menu is exemplery. The presentation/the flavours and the... more
Older hotel (5*) on the river, excellent service, had a great time.
The 5-star hotel was located right on the Mahawelli river. The most excellent thing to notice about this hotel was the service. We had people who worked noticeably hard to make our stay very enjoyable: from the check-in, housekeeping service, restaurant service, bell-boy, gym, etc. Out of the 4 hotels (Taj Airport, Amaya Lake, Mahawelli Reach, and the Garadari) in Sri Lanka, this is the only one where the waiter asked for an evaluation at the end of the meals. The owner/relative of the owner of the hotel seemed to be constantly on the... more
Good location
We stayed at this hotel for one night and loved it. The room was large (I mean really large, thoug it was a standard room). Though the dinner was not as good as we expected, the breakfast was very good. All of the staff were great and helpful. Definitely, id I ever go to Kandy again, I will stay at this Hotel.
Nice Colonial Hotel with decent food
Having used this hotel as a base for exploring Kandy and around, it was a welcoming place to rest after long days. The rooms are a great size and all old wood, colonial style with comfortable beds and clean bathrooms - we were advised that some of the suites are only 20/30 USD extra and may be worth an upgrade when you check in. The food in the hotel was buffet style and was very good - the entertainment however was appauling - local man with keyboard mumbling sounds reminiscent of something your parents used to dance to.<br... more
