Reasonably priced, very comfortable room. Staff were excellent and very friendly. Would highly recommend to anyone wanting to get away from it all and wanting a relaxed atmosphere.

Excellent hotel. Rooms funky and stylish, with lovely balcony where you can watch the sea. Staff very friendly and accomodating. Food is good and ate sat on the terrace right by the sea. Only problem is no dedicated parking but lots of parking on the road outside so not that serious.

Nice getaway
We ended up at the Sandgate by chance, but weren't disappointed. The rooms are on the small side, but well appointed. Would definitely recommend paying the little extra for a sea-view room though. If you're staying over a weekend and want to eat at the hotel's restaurant (its quite a walk to the next restaurant) then I would also recommend booking ahead. On the Saturday night we stayed the restaurant was fully booked. We did manage to get seated in the end and although the service was quite slow and a few things were no longer available on the menu, the food was worth the wait. Otherwise a friendly and helpful staff that seemed more than happy to go out of their way to ensure you had a good stay.
Smashing Location, Great Service
We stayed here with some friends for my wife's birthday in September 2006. The location is great - overlooking the English Channel, the rooms are recently redecorated and are kitted out with good stuff. We ate in the hotel and the food was nice, the service was excellent. We were lucky the weather was great and we were able to sit outside until the early hours. We would go again.
Loved the Food
We stayed at the Sangate Hotel 11th/12th August. The hotel is newly refurbished and under new ownership. The room was great with a balcony and fantastic view. The staff are young and really did their upmost to help with any matter. The Manager Ben Morgan was brilliant, his meticulous attention was second to none. I hope his bosses value his input in this hotel. We ate in the hotel on both evenings the food was first class we even had a chat with the Chef I asked if he could come home with us, but of course he is very busy cooking the fantastic menu at the Sandgate. A special waitress Maxine stood out although all the girls attitudes shone through. Well done everyone thank you for a special weekend. You will see us again. Dave & Sally Osmond
They tyry hard and deserve to succeed
we stayed for one night in July 2006. The first thing to say is that this is primarily a restaurant and bar and not hotel. The bar is very busy and noisy in the evening as is the terrace outside. The young management team are enthusiastic and want to be helpful but it is rather chaotic at present, i gather it has just re-opened under new ownership. We arrived at lunchtime, ordered a light lunch and sat enjoying the view of the beach opposite all afternoon. At 6.30 we were told we would have to move as they were laying up for dinner. we then said we would like to book for dinner, to be told the restaurant was full. In fairness they did find us a table at 9pm but we were surrounded by young jostling drinkers and service at this point became occasional. The rooms are pleasant but be aware the beds are small. In the morning breakfast was good but be aware while continental breakfast ius included in the price, the full english is £9.95. which they omit to mention. Overall, if they concentrate they have a chance of creating a nice auberge style hotel, but in the meantime proceed with caution.
Management response from SandgateHotel 08 Aug 2006

The Sandgate hotel has recently been taken over, revamped and re-launched in June this year. Any new business is not without its teething problems, but I don’t want to use this as any form of excuse. I'm really saddened that at that time we were unable to offer the experience I would have hoped for, but most of the issues have already been resolved with the weekend opening of a 2nd bar on the premises with a separate entrance, leaving diners in peace to enjoy there food. Staff training is an ongoing thing, with comments like this taken onboard and amendments made should all make for better service. Thank you for taking the time out to write your comments, I value every guests opinion and hope that in the future you may wish to retry the Sandgate with the view to review. Yours Sincerely, Ben Morgan

Great food and atmosphere
We live almost next door to the Sandgate Hotel and often eat there, and have always found it to be excellent value for money and very good quality. In the summer they were doing a special deal of steak and frites or moules frites for as little as £5.30 if you turned up at 5.30pm - I am very particular about steak, but it was tender and cooked exactly how I'd asked. Although obviously I can't comment on the rooms, I don't think they're particularly expensive, especially for a hotel right on the seafront. I have to disagree that it's a smoky place - the restaurant is completely non-smoking and the bar usually has the big double doors open in the summer. You can also sit on the terrace and enjoy the fabulous sunsets - not much smoke out there!
dogdy food
Just discovered your site. So my review relates to July 2004. We stayed overnight, prior to travelling to France, ate in the restaurant as it had been recommended in guides, and there was only one other couple eating as well. We always taste part of each others food and did so on this occasion. In the middle of the night we were both very ill and had doubts about our long drive to Burgundy. Told staff at hotel, who were somewhat unconcerned. I wrote to advise on our return but did not receive a reply.
Fantastic!
We stayed at the Sandgate Hotel for a romantic weekend. The Hotel staff were lovely! So friendly, couldn't do enough for us. The food was exquisite and my partner who is a chef said so too! The decor, the people, for food and drink and of course the beautiful view...we just couldn't fault it.
terrible
The smokiness hits you with a blast as you walk in the door. And it is everywhere downstairs and even makes the stair and hallways unbearable. Two chain smokers finally ran us out of the bar. We had the whole hotel for the wedding party, so the smokers must have been locals. I realize that Europe is very tolerant of smoking and it's everywhere, but this was well beyond normal. The food was bad. They try to fancy up everything. You wouldn't believe what they did to SCRAMBLED EGGS! The continental breakfast was basically toast, coffee or tea, whole apple, or boxed cereal. Very sub-par. The service was terrible. As I said, we had the whole hotel for the wedding party and we were asked to remove the toddler (who was being quiet and pleasant) from the restaurant -- and not nicely. Everytime we asked for something, there was a snooty attitude. Before we arrived they messed up our reservations and the groom's family didn't have a place to stay! After strong words from the bride, they finally reluctantly worked it out. It's a small hotel that would do well to realize it and use the personal service advantage rather than trying to be exclusive and haughty.
pleased as punch
I found this hotel to be a home from home. The staff were smartly present and happy to help. The quality of the food and style of the rooms pleased me greatly. I will definately be staying here again.
Disappointed
My brother got married and we took all 15 rooms in the hotel the night of the marriage, and half the night before. You can imagine the revenue that they received in rooms costs, bar bills and meals from our party. On the morning of the wedding, I was disappointed when the shower head totally fell off, in fact it was clearly not attached and would appear that the cleaner would just be putting it back in place daily and not reporting the fact it was as much use as a garden hose pipe ( less). I did not have time to complain or advise the hotel as I had a wedding to attend! I emailed them a week afterwards to inform them and advise of my disappointment, and received not even a response never mind an apology. This hotel purports to care about comfort and says that their rooms are superbly appointed. I would disagree with this having received no response whatsoever from them. The drinks are highly priced in the bar, and the food as well. Have a think before booking in here, I wouldn't want anyone else to be let down as I have been.
