Marlborough Hotel reviews

Jun 2011, Disappointed

This was our first visit to the Isle Of Wight and it was seriously marred by staying at a hotel that was far below acceptable. Our room was desperate for a refurbishment. Carpets were dirty and badly fitted. Electric cables were untidily trailed along walls and ceilings... more

Nice for a break
I think this hotel is nice overall, although obviously with the exceptional wet summer it infringed on the enjoyment of the holiday. The hotel is a bit rough around the edges- little bits lose/ chipped here and there, but the friendlyness of the staff and quality of meals makes up for this. I would recommend it but try not to get a rainy week!
Basic But OK
Stayed here on a coach trip (Tinsel &Turkey). The hotel accomadation is on 3 floors. Ground Floor has: Dinning Room. Some Bedrooms. Bar/Lounge/entertainment area 1st and 2nd Floors. Other Bed Rooms. The hotel does not have a lift although there is a chair lift to some of the rooms on the 1st floor. This not the place for anybody that has mobility problems and has difficulties climbing stairs. The bedrooms are basic but clean, with fresh bedding and towels of a reasonable quality. The food is basic,... more
never stay there again
would never stay at this hotel again, the first night we were there water leaked in all onto the bedding, the manager was rude to 1 woman, the shower didnt work properly, there was mould all over the bedroom wall and bathroom and it stunk of damp in the bathroom. felt as if a heard of elephants were walking above us as they had boards on the roof to stop the leaking that were banging together so that kept us awake most of the night and thats not what you really want on your holiday you want peace and quiet. on the stairs there was... more
Management response from LisboaShanklin

whilst we beleive it is important to receive comments regarding guests stay , we also believe we are providing a service to all our clients with the atmost friendly efficient and yet affordable service . this response relates to the above comments which we feel are damaging , we have been in the hotel industry for over 20yrs and clearly this were upnoctious clients who probrably have not traveled before and certainly didn't know what to expect from a 2* rating hotel , due to adverse weather in Aug and Sept and whilst we had works being carried out in our flat roofs , tubs were placed to contain any leaking from the ceiling above . in their house if there was a leak wouldn't they have done the same ? in regards to the food , we serve one of the best in our area and having gained last year a 5* award for for food & hygiene we proud ourselves in the quality and variety of meals we provide . prices paid by coach parties are on average 50% less of our rack rates nevertheless we still provide excelent service and good value for money .

Average rooms, below average management
We stayed for 2 nights in July 04 and were pleasantly surprised by the convenient location of the hotel to the beach. The room wasn't actually too bad; very dated furnishings and bedding, but of a reasonable size and clean. Breakfast was pretty good too. Unfortunately that is where the plus points end I'm afraid. The front of the hotel was in the process of being painted or renovated and there was scaffolding right against our window. Not intending to spend too much time actually in our room (and in typical British fashion), we decided... more
Pleasing Hotel
Stayed at the hotel with a coach party. We were very pleased with the accommodation. Bedrooms were well furnished with tea and coffee making facilities. The hotel was very clean and food was excellent, staff friendly. Would definitely consider staying again. The only slight criticism would be the cold bathroom - a heated towel rail would be an advantage!
wonderful atmosphere
We were there as a coach party of 42 for a turkey and tinsel and I can only say it was great. If there is any critisism some of the rooms were a bit small but the big welcome we had more than made up for that. The food was excellent always piping hot service always quick and the staff were lovely they joined in our celebrations and father christmas was also very good. It was a warm spotlessly clean hotel we would certainly return there and yes I would recommend this hotel to my friends
Helpful friendly staff made this a good place to stay
We were greeted at reception by a friendly helpful guy. Our assigned room faced the rear but he quickly offered us a front facing room opening onto the balcony at the same price (of course, they weren't full). The room was small; in fact cramped. It was difficult to open the bathroom door and impossible to pass between it and the beds when it was open. The drawers were large but didn't run smoothly and needed some coaching. And there was only a shower (although we expected that). The shower head was fixed and suitable for anyone over 6... more
Good value for money
the hotel was perfectly located within easy reach to most attractions , pubs & restaurants and just a few minutes walk from the beach . the hotel was very welcoming and the bedrooms well appointed with extra touches that made us feel relaxed . the wireless internet access was a bonus since we dind't have to pay for and the staff were very polite and friendly .Excellent food and generous breakfast .
Warm and friendly service, excellent breakfast and clean accommodation - superb!
I booked 4 rooms at the Marlborough Hotel in September for a group of 8 of us, visiting the Isle of Wight over a weekend. Booking was a pleasure - I called up to check on availability and the service was extremely friendly and efficient. We got an email to confirm our booking too. It's pleasing to be able to say that the stay was absolutely in line with this initial positive impression. The rooms looks like they have been recently renovated, and whilst basic, are spotlessly clean and very comfortable. The same can be said for the... more
Good
The hotel itself was a bit basic B & B but the owners more than made up for that. The food was first class, they were more than happy to do anything for us. It is near the town and very central for site seeing. We would definatly go back again. Thank you very much for making us so welcome.
