Fab Holiday
from JohnoYork
We have just returned from a 8 day holiday at the Villa Romana Hotel. It is the first time we have booked half board but the prices here are so low that we thought we would give it a try! Upon arrival the reception was absolute bedlam, however, this was down to a local childrens spanish sports group who had just checked in and I'm glad to say went the next day! After the intial shock of our first two rooms being occupied we were upgraded to a quad room and were delighted with it. The hotel staff were excellent and couldn't do enough for you. I think most people only stay a few days so those of us staying longer soon got to know the staff quite well and they seemed to recognise us, which when you think the hotel has around 500 rooms is pretty good. Unfortunately the weather was awful!!! Apparantly the worst for 15 years. However we just made sure we had a great time, we already had a 7 day pass to Portaventura (make sure you buy one on line before you go, much cheaper). I had read some reviews before we went and was apprehensive over the food, but was very pleasantly surprised. Yes they have to cater for lots of nationalities but there was still plenty of choice. Drinks very reasonable with a bottle of nice wine at dinner only £4. I would definately recommend this hotel, we booked through [--] only cost £280 total for 2 adults, 1 child, half board for 8 days!! Rooms were very clean with maid service every day,we will definately be going back but probably only for 3/4 days next time as our waistlines won't take another 8 day trip!
Great Location - Good Hotel

Having stayed at the Villa Romana in June 2005 and being very impressed we returned in July 2006. We found that the quality was not as good and a few things had slipped, below is our breakdown. Food - 10/10 - best hotel for food. Excellent variety and always something for the children to eat. We never had to wait for our food, we always managed to get a table but then we ate earlier as we had children. Rooms - 9/10 - when we first stayed at the hotel our room had been upgraded, we did not realise this when we rebooked our holiday and booked just a standard room (same as before). When we arrived at our room it was tiny as there were 2 Adults a child on the sofa bed and a cot!! So we paid to have our room upgraded to a family suite which was much better and provided more than enough space. Rooms are clean and to a fairly good standard. Pool - 6/10 - this is where we had noticed the biggest decline. The water in the main pool was constantly cloudy and felt greasey. We tended to stay near the baby pool with our children as this was very clean. There is a life guard who is excellent and keeps matters under control. They operate a policy on sunbeds where your towels are removed if no one has been on the sunbed for a couple of hours, they don't like people reserving sunbeds and not using them. In addition a couple of people hurt their feet on broken bits of plastic around the edge of the pool and one person even fell through and the surface around the pool was very slippery. Location - 10/10 - excellant location, is actually closer than some of the Port Adventura accommodation. There is a road train that can take you to the park but we found the 15 minute walk no trouble with our children (1 and 8) and the train was quite expensive. Entertainment - 4/10 - For children under the age of 9 the entertainment is fine. They have a hotel run kids club which is very good, lots of activities every day and a mini disco every night with different activities and the people that run it are very good with the kids. However Adult entertainment is not brilliant and could be a lot better. Overall we would rate this holiday as an 8 out of 10, previous year was a 9 out of 10 but things had gone down hill this year but we would still recommend this hotel.
dont forget your earplugs

We went to this supposed 4 star hotel last year and was SOOO disappointed. Upon arrival we were left to lug all of our cases and two sleeping children (age 7 and 18 months) up to our room in the pitch black dark. When we went into the room the wall lights were vibrating because of the noise from the hotel 'cabaret'. After two nights of having the baby wake we asked to be moved. They moved us to the other end of the hotel and to our horror discovered the hotel next door was just as noisy and went on longer to 4am (hotel entertainment noise until12 followed by 2 hours of chair moving across marble floors) The food is OK but becomes repetitive after a while. Both the adult and childrens pools were not heated and freezing -the kids were blue in 10 mins. One day we were horrfied to watch a mugging take place in the reception area. A young lady ran in knocked an elderly guest down and grabbed her bag. The hotel does have a security guard who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. We also had a camcorder stolen whilst watching the evening show- which resulted in a rather long winded and cumbersome trip to the police station. Salou is a busy resort with lots of shops, the beach is nice great for kids but at the weekends all the spanish old folk arrive on coaches and we couldnt actually get on the beach one day it was so packed, If you are willing to walk up the beach quite a way it is quieter. The hotel is in a good location for Port Aventura (this is why we picked it) and the theme park and water parks are great. This hotel got its 4 star rating by having an indoor pool however the rest just doesnt stack up. We came home tireder than when we went which is OK if you are 21 and with your mates but not with a young family. Be warned!
great experiance

We stayed here in june, in two seperate rooms which they gave us next to eachother as i have two teenage daughters, the rooms themselves were of average size but it was all that we needed, the bathrooms were nice and clean and everthing worked, (air con etc) fresh towels daily and room replenished with toiletries. The meals themselves were of a good quality and variety but in a few cases were left a little long before being changed non the less the matradee addresed the situation. the waiting staff were helpful and polite but on occasion the language barrier left them seeking help from another member of staff who spoke english, again not a real problem The pool area was spotless with a good sized pool and plenty of sun lounge beds for all, although it was the hotel policy that no towels be placed on the beds in the morning, this was taken no notice of and the hotel did not commit to its policy (very annoying). Good entertainment for children on the evenings with there kids club, which was followed by the adult entertainment, nice area outside with tables and chairs to enjoy the shows with waiter service. There is another hotel on one side of this hotel which also has late night entertainment and did run later, but it was not of the rowdey sort, so not really any problem. This hotel is a 10 min walk to the beach area and all local shops and bars ,plus bus service to other areas, i.e cap salou, all in all a good family hotel with very little problems i would have no hessitation reccomending this hotel

Be Advised Hotel Opposite Plays music LOUDLY TILL 4AM on occas.
from familyof5-2006
Booked the hotel via travelagent, fully checked out if suitable for my family consisting of 2 adults, 1infant, 2yr old and 4yr old. Excellent room standard, as seperate bedroom for the children, glass doors not such a safe idea as young children will throw any object they might pick up. Cracking the glass! Food was hot, and had good choice, although this was repetitive we luckly stayed one week. Hotel was very clean and very friendly staff, only 10 min walk to centre of Salou. 20 min walk to local train station to Barcelona which takes 1hr 35mins. Universal park is 10 min drive, becareful its 25min to walk as you cannot walk to it, in a straight line as people might suggest 5-10mins. La pineda beach is great for kids CAPE SOUL area small sandy clean beachs advise car hire Salou beach is ok but packed, not great for the little ones Great for beer drinking adults. Tarragona is a place to vist, the old city and catedral is great. BE ADVISED BE ADVISE The hotels policy is all entertainment finishes at around 11pm ish which is fine for young children. BUT BUT across the road the Hotel carribian has only out side LOUD LIVE MUSIC NIGHTCLUB TILL 4AM. Would advise only having a room over looking the pool area as this is the furthest distance away. Due to no sleep we would not return, even if offered for free by the travelagent. But if your children are over 5 yrs old and can sleep with music playing which most can you will be fine. Yes we did mention it to the hotel, but its not within their control, and the hotel was full, unable to move room as family rooms are limited to one area which we where in!!!!
Great Hotel

My family and I stayed here for 2 weeks in August 2006 and enjoyed every minute of our holiday. The main purpose of choosing Salou as our holiday destination was to visit Port Aventura Theme Park for the benefit of our two boys, aged 16 and 9. The park is fantastic and we got excellent value from our 14 day ticket passes. The Hotel Villa Romana itself was highly recommended by a travel agent friend and I must say we were not disappointed. The hotel is in an excellent location for visiting the theme park, a comfortable 10 to 15 minutes walk. It is a sufficient distance away from the hustle and bustle of Salou town itself yet within reasonable walking distance to both the shops and beach. We quite enjoyed the shopping and beach but did find it all a bit too busy. Our main enjoyment was with the hotel and the great faciilties available there. This was the first occassion we had ever stayed half board whilst abroad and had some concerns about the possible monotony of eating in the same hotel for 14 days. Our concerns were completely unjustified. The food here was wonderful. Service was excellent and staff very friendly and efficient. If we had a slight complaint it probably was with the quality of some of the evening entertainment which on some evenings was a little bland. I would highly recommend this hotel to young families and couples.
Not bad but should have been better!!!

Hi everyone, myself and my partner visited the Villa Romana at the start of September this year and to be frank its potential isn't realised!!! It is in a reasonble position 10mins from the theme park and 10mins from the beach. Both beach and Port Aventura were fantastic!!! The hotel is modern and very clean, the rooms are of an average size but furnished well. In my opinion it is one of the better looking hotels most of the others looked drab, unkept and story block like. The food is nice enough well presented although very repetative if you go for 2weeks. The bar and restaurant staff were superb, always helpful and friendly. The entertainments team did very well considering the amount of people from a lot of different nationalities, they all spoke fluently in a number of different languages. The pool was lovely, big and clean although there was a lack of shade if you wanted to get out of the sun for a while. Unfortunatly the hotel let its self down in my eyes. We had to wait 4hours for our room to be ready upon arrival, we had to queue for 15mins on average for dinner and the reception staff were so slow at everything!!!! Please don't let this put you off generally the hotel was fine but for me it is not what I expect from a 4star rating! Maybe a good 3star. Make sure if you book this hotel don;t pay over the odds we only paid £500pp make sure you don't pay any more it is not worth it!!!
hotel not 4 star
from dino27
Hi just got back from Villa Romana and hope this review helps a few people 1. Rooms ok not 4 star but very clean maid sevice every day our air conditioning didnt work properly ( but hotel said it was ) 2. Food . good enough was of a typical spanish hotel standard and you could always find something to eat. Breakfast was prob the best selection 3. Entertainment was again usual hotel standard our nearly three year old loved the kiddies disco . The evening entertainment for adults seemed ok but I cant really comment as we never stayed a full evening as we left soon after it started to get our kid to sleep 4 Location very good not in centre of resort but 10 mins from resort or Port adventura 5. Port adventura. we went on last day with our young son as the weather was changing and although there were only several rides we could go on I would imagine it would be a great day out for both grown ups or teenagers/ older kids( we booked tickets last min at hotel 35euros each adult, but a couple we meet said to book on internet before holidays and u get a lot cheaper) 6.Weather . we had great weather up until last night when there was a serious thunderstorm which caused serious flooding (cars floating down street) this caused our flight to be delayed then diverted . the rep said this weather is quite common in sept. A couple of other things are 1. Lunch . only thing hotel provides is either sandwich/rolls or pizza no bar snacks which we found didnt suit ourselves. For lunch i would recommend going LINDAS bar/resturant behind the Titanic bar (close to hotel) 2 Eating out. we eat out twice and suggest the Guinness Tavern its a good 30 mins walk from hotel but excellent food hope this might help a few people. I dont think i would go back to this hotel but i would not put anybody else going
Family Hotel
from CaroleN
Overall reasonable. Room had cracked patio glass on arrival covered with parcel tape, but we were moved the next day. Food was average, not always kept as hot as it could be. Lots of Veal & Pork, does become a little tedious after 2 weeks!! Room very smart & excellent cleaners. The hotel is in an excellent location about 10 minutes walk to the town & beach. The pool was excellent and very clean. Lots of Sun;loungers. Entertainment staff very good. Some of the shows were a little 2nd Rate. Lots of small children so if dont like children this is not for you. The hotel has room cards, we had 3 rooms and the cards used to deactivate every few days so we had to have them reactivated, can be a little annoying. I would say this is definately a good all round FAMILY Hotel.
We are a family of four with two girls aged 9 and 5, we had the best time ever at Vil La Romana we couldn't have asked for anything more. The hotel was very clean, room was cleaned every day to a high standard, towels changed every day if you followed the hotel rules in... more
