Ardmore House Hotel reviews

Jan 2009, David West

My colleague and I booked a two night stay in the Ardmore House whilst on a professional development course in St Albans. Upon arriving at 11:30pm we checked in with a stony unhelpful (borderline rude) receptionist. Ardmore House had no record of payment despite an email... more

Pleasant staff, but poor quality hotel
All the features of a poor quality hotel: thin and scratchy towels, poor quality shower, toiletries in a sachet (one sachet of shower gel for two people), small television - I could go on. The staff were pleasant enough and the room was clean but this is an operation that is, as it were, highly sensitive to costs. For this level of quality it is not even that cheap. The restaurant attached was far better, with good quality cuisine and equally good staff - a shame that it was virtually deserted on a Friday night. Overall, I find it hard to... more
Thank you Ardmore
When visiting my dad in St. Albans (my hometown), I had booked a self catring establishment (178 London Road), which let us down and bumped us off. We were not amused after a 10hrs flight. We started phoning around. Unfortunately for us, but fortunately for the hotels, St. Albans is an extremly popular town, whether for tourism, business or just the right distance for access to London proper without the hassle of a big city. It took us about 2 hrs to find any accommodation, which was the Ardmore. The young lady at reception (portugese) was... more
Like sleeping on a train
Perhaps it wasn't the best idea we had, to get away for a night somewhere out of London. My fiancee suggested St. Albans, since he had been there when he was young and thought I would like it. The town was lovely, very easy to get around in and lots of historical stuff to see (Roman ruins, beautiful cathedral and part of an abbey). Also there were some great places to eat and the pub across from the cathedral is the best I've had in a long time!! The hotel was a bit disappointing though. We arrived via train, found the hotel about a 10... more
Cute and friendly, but needs some work
The staff of this hotel are very friendly. I stay sometimes with business. The hotel is a family run business I believe, and they do exceptionally well. Some rooms are quite old and need a re-fit though, and the standard of decor isn't great. Once the tiles on the bathroom floor were all cracked and I had to put towels down to be able to stand in there. The bathrooms are quite small and the extracts aren't great. There is however a smart new extension and breakfast room, which they use for weddings, and the gardens are very... more
Nice, convenient, friendly
My 10 year old son and I stayed here for three nights, using St. Albans as a "jumping-off" point for London (then the trains were out of service the days we were there, but that is hardly the hotel's fault!!) Anyway, the staff was quite gracious, and the breakfast included in the rate very good with lots of options. We ate one night in the restaurant for dinner, and it was fine. The room, while a little small, was fine, and the bathroom exceptionally nice (I don't usually comment on the bathrooms!) I recommend.
lovely grounds
I stayed at this hotel last month the staff was very polite and helpful my room was not huge but the right size. I found out that the hotel is mostly none smoking what was great. The breakfast, the cooked breakfast was fantastic but the buffet table a bit basic but still ok.
Wedding Reception
What a fabulous hotel to have a wedding reception in, the venue is just perfect, the food was plentiful. Having a room at our use was so helpful and the room was very large and very nicely decorated. The grounds are gorgeous and the facility to have a barbeque is ideal Woukd definatley have our wedding reception here again!!!
Good Value
Fairly attractive hotel, welcome not great but polite. Our room (no. 7) was tiny and the double bed very small. Room smelt of smoke. However. it was very clean and good ensuite shower-room. Breakfast was good and well served. Beware rooms near train line if a light sleeper. Good value for money and no problems.
useful london base
I use Ardfmore a lot when I have to be in London next day on business. It's a five minute walk from a very fast train connection right into the city of London and beyond to the South Coast at Brighton. It also has a big car park that saves you paying for the station multi-level. The rooms are middle range and middle price for Britain, and its location / price package is really quite fair if you are visiting London. No aircon though. You don't need to eat in; St Albans has a few great Greek Restaurants as well as Italian and... more
Pretty grounds, uncomfortable bed
Just stayed here for a friend's wedding. The grounds and wedding facilities are beautiful, but the room itself was in need of updating and the bathroom was tiny. Worst of all, the bed felt like you were sleeping on a large pile of safety pins -- the springs were poking through.
