I have stayed here many times before, and am always happy to return.
I have just returned from staying at the Ascott, - my 5th time, usually alone but this time with my daughter. As always, we had a very nice room - yes, the size of rooms DOES vary, but you would expect this in a converted (and very well converted!) period house. I have always had plenty of room, the rooms are well appointed and individually designed. If you like the impersonal atmosphere of Travel Inns etc, then this may not be your cup of tea, but the Victorian decor is completely in keeping with the age of the building. We were on... more
Flaky, not convenient to anything
This is a small hotel (<10 rooms) in a historic building in Manchester. It is near the motorway. It is claimed to be near city center but is not- nothing within walking distance. Rooms may vary depending upon which floor you get. I was in third floor room #7 which was apparently a maid's bedroom. It was very small, no desk, hardly room to turn around. Wireless internet did not work. The bathroom was large but a bit odd. I couldn't get the shower to be anything cooler than scalding, though I have used many hotel showers on several... more
Management response from DavidAscott

Under the United Kingdom's current legislation - Immigration (Hotel Records) Order 1972. All non-British and Commonwealth citizens must surrender their passport upon check-in. This is common practice within the UK. In regards to his complaint of differing sizes of rooms. The hotel is a Victorian property and the sizes of rooms varies due to the nature of the building. On all our literature and advetising we state that we are 10 minutes from the city centre by car or train. We are NOT a city centre hotel and have never advetised as such. Wireless internet is FREE and does required an access code which neither guest asked for (this is probably why it didn't work). And finally our reception closes at 1045pm which is stated on all our websites, guests have an access key to the front door and can come and go as they please once checked in. For £38 for a single room, not many people would expect to have 24 hour reception.

Warm and welcoming
I stayed at the Ascott for one night on a business trip to Manchester and loved it. I think it is fantastic value for money and infinfitely better than some of the other, very grotty places I have stayed in nearby. The room wasn't huge but it was very cosy, spotlessly clean and extremely comfortable. I only wanted cereal and toast for breakfast so can't really comment on the food but the service, both when I arrived and in the morning, was extremely friendly, warm and helpful.
Value for money and very helpful
We spent one night at the Ascott and found the room to be clean, well serviced and quiet. The owner was very helpful when we arrived and when we asked about restaurants where we could eat (Thursday night) he even rang to book us a table and gave directions for us to walk to same. He did point out that we had a basic double room and that it was due for refurbishment soon but we did not have a problem with the room. The en-suite bathroom was OK but the ballcock in the cistern stuck so that every time we flushed it we had to remove cover... more
Love the place
We are a family of 3adults from Malta. It is not the first time that we booked a room at Ascott hotel and we were last there in January 2008. The rooms are spotlessly clean, comfortable, and the breakfast varied and good. David, Peter and all the staff at Ascott are extremely helpful and accomodating and we'd find no difficulty whatsoever in going there again.
