Crown And Cushion Hotel reviews

Not impressed and not coming back

I don't normally give feedback but our family reunion stay was a series of unfortunate events which I have to comment on. One of the couples in our party suffered water damage from above bedroom and so had to move at 10.30pm with no apology; food was substandard and veggies were served cold, 10 minutes after main meal arrived; swimming pool was freezing and kids could not use; bathrooms are not shower-friendly; we were told birthday cake was 25 pounds but were later charged 45 for it and it was not tasty. I wrote letter to manager about these concerns but am still waiting for reply 1 month later.

I stayed at the Crown and Cushion on...

May 2008, Miss S B

I stayed at the Crown and Cushion on business about 4 years ago and it was pretty basic. I remembered that the food was quite good, but the room was of a very low standard - toilet didn't flush, no hot water, room not very clean.
According to their website they are under new management, so I hoped that the hotel had improved. It was booked very last minute and we had no other choice of hotel in the local area. As it was a weekend, we had to book two nights. This time we were staying for leisure, as we had an event to go to in the area.
Unfortunately the new management do not seem to have made any improvements and the place is in dire need of a refurb. They charged £105.00 per night for bed and breakfast. The rooms are shabby, although clean (and the toilet flushed this time!). The staff are friendly, but not particularly well trained. The rooms were boiling hot, and it was impossible to turn the heating down. The bed was really uncomfortable, with thin, cheap pillows and a tired old mattress. The heat and uncomfortable bed did not make for a good night's sleep.
We had a meal in the restaurant on the second night. Within one minute of seating us the waiter asked if we wanted drinks, when we hadn't even had a chance to check the wine list. He came back after ten minutes, and we ordered wine and our food. At that point he told me that the dish I wanted was not on the menu that night. He could have told us this before we made our food choices. Our starters were served quickly, and were good but not outstanding. He did not bring our wine. When we asked the other waitress on duty, she checked with him and eventually he came over and told us that the wine we wanted wasn't available. So we chose another bottle, which didn't arrive until our main courses did. The waitress bought it over to check it was the right bottle, but then went into a back room to open it. I would prefer to have the wine uncorked at the table.
The waiter also did not offer us a bread roll until we were half way through the main course. I didn't want one by that point and it would have been courteous to offer it before or with our starters as he did with all the other diners, including people who were seated after us.
Our main courses were again good, but not outstanding. We both ordered rib eye steak, and the waiter did not offer us a steak knife. I hoped this was because the meat was of good enough quality not to need a steak knife, but I think it was more that he simply forgot as he gave steak knives to the couple next to us who had ordered steak. He was perfectly polite and friendly, just a bit inept. It's not as though they were that busy - the restaurant was only a third full.
All of these taken individually are minor gripes, and the experience wasn't awful, it just wasn't that great for the money it cost.
I would not recommend the Crown & Cushion until the new management take a good, hard look at what they could achieve with Chipping Norton's main hotel. It's a real wasted opportunity. They need to train their staff properly, and spend some real money on the whole hotel. Otherwise the prices they charge are not justifiable.

Steer well clear. Simply one of the worst value for money rooms I have ever stayed in:
- Dirty Curtains;
- TV was poor quality and didn’t receive any clear channels, remote didn’t work;
- Reading light fell off wall when adjusted;
- Room was cold, fan heater provided with one leg missing;
- No shower curtain provided;
- Shower wall bracket did not fit shower, so shower would not stay on wall.
Breakfast was the only positive point.
Basically its hostel standard charging £80+ a night.
