Fantastic Resort, good hotel but rude staff and poor food.
Salou is a great resort for all types of people. We are a young 18 year couple who went on our first holiday abroad and it was a fantastic experience. It is a very lively city, with hundreds of bar and resturant's to choose from but without being a roudy 18-30's club venue. The hotel is situated extremely well, with the beach only 500m away and shops and bars even nearer. The hotel itself is very clean, rooms were very nice all including balconys and great air conditioning. The pool area was amazing, pool bar was nice maybe slightly over priced but good range of drinks. The down side to the holiday was the food, within the hotel was practicly unedable, food seemed very undercooked and most definatly don't purcahse food from the pool side bar, the pizza we had was awful. Also staff were disgustingly rude within the hotel, barley speaking much english and making us feel as though we shouldn't be within their country. We had one particular incident with a member of staff within the resturant which resorted in my girlfriend in tears and from then on we ate out every night as we didn't want to go there again. Overall we had a fantastic time, although the food wasn't great and the staff weren't friendly it was still possible to have a great time due to the fantastic location, great pools and the cleanliness, we would deffinetly return to the resort, If possible i would reccommend going self catering or B+B and wouldnt bother paying the extra for Half Board. I would defintley recommend the place- it was a holiday we'l never forget.
A Good Value Hotel
It was with trepidation that we booked into the Hotel Jaime 1 in Salou having read previous reports. Our first impressions were of a huge, slightly dated hotel in a quiet street just off the heart of Salou. There are three buildings, one large and two smaller, one of which seems to be for English guests. Since we were travelling independently, our room was in the Dali block amongst mainly Spanish guests. The check-in was quick and friendly and our third floor room fairly basic but large and clean overlooking the pool. We had read before that the food was terrible but nevertheless we tried dinner and were pleasantly surprised. Yes, the food was Spanish oriented (it is mainly a Spanish hotel!) but it was perfectly edible and there was enough choice for everyone to have something to eat. As it was, we ate a very good mixed salad followed by a Spanish dish and then a selection of desserts with a very good bottle of wine (4 Euro extra for the wine). The staff in the hotel are very friendly and helpful. We were particularly impressed with the hotel animation team of 4 who did their best to entertain everyone during the day and the evening. The children were particularly well looked after by a young British girl, Danielle, who had a "pied piper" effect on the children with them following her everywhere! The children seemed to love all of the activities and even some British kids who had been signed up for the British kids club, abandoned it and joined the hotel group (which incidentally was provided free by the hotel and was an extra cost with the British tour companies). All in all we had a very nice time and got very good value for money. Yes, the hotel is a little bit tired but this is more than made up for by the willingness and kindness of the staff to ensure you have a nice holiday. Would we stay there again? Yes, I think we would!
Fantastic
After reading negative reports about this hotel we wandered what we were going to when we booked and paid for this holiday. Well we thought, if we don't like it, we are only in the hotel for a week. When we arrivedat the Jaime, as we were geting out of the taxi we asked a lady who was going home what it was like, her comment was IT'S C---, oh no, what have we let ourselves in for. Marcus 15, and Jade 10, said come on we are here now. what a shock we got. After being shown to our room it was WOW from all 4 of us. Everywhere was clean, everyone was polite, the 3 pools were well looked after and the food was edible. the kids wanted to stay another MONTH, and we (hubby and me)agreed. Well done Jaime, and if anyone asks, we would RECOMMEND YOU. THANKYOU TO ALL THE STAFF AT HOTEL JAIME From Michael Mavis(pink hair) Marcus and Jade Taylor
Excellent Value for money
I stayed at the Jaime Primero for 1 week with my partner and 2 children aged 2 and 6. We all thought that the hotel was good value for money. The rooms were of a good size along with the balcony. The reception staff and maids were all very friendly. The British tend to be located in block 3 which is the quietest of the 3 blocks (a bonus with small children!). The hotel had their own entertainment team (an English young lady and a Spanish guy). The children loved the nightly mini-disco and the afternoon kids play sessions. Each day there were also adult activities such as aerobics and volleyball. The adult evening entertainment was lack-lustre and consisted of quizzes, bingo etc and the prices in the hotel bar were extortinate compared to local bars. The facilities in the hotel were of a very good standard with a heated indoor pool (for a small fee) and gym, 2 outdoor play areas and 2 large swimming pools. There was also an outdoor jacuzzi which was heated (to a very high temperature each morning for a couple of hours). The only real complaint about the hotel was the food. It was not of poor quality but was invariably cold and very samey. This applied to both the breakfast and the evening meal. This was a shame as I felt that it would not have taken much to improve the standard of the food. There were several nationalities staying at the hotel mainly Brits, Spanish and French. As we were there in low season the hotel was not overcrowded but this is a very large hotel (700 odd rooms) and I can imagine it could get extremely busy in the height of the season. The hotel's location is ideal as it is a short drive from Reus airport, a few minutes stroll from Salou beach and the town's bars and restaurants, yet set in a quiet road. Overall a very good value for money holiday. We diid not pay a huge amount for this holiday and after reading the reviews of other visitors was very pleasantly surprised! Recommended for families, probably not for groups of young friends or couples without kids who are looking for decent evening entertainment.
Hotel Jaime 1
12 of us from a college in Hertfordshire recently visited the Hotel Jaime 1. We all read the reviews from this website and were worried about what we were going to find when we arrived. Although on entry to the hotel the staff were not too helpful the rooms we stayed in were clean and comfy but very basic. The general hotel was nice, the pool was very cold but was still nice for the time of year. We decided to go half board, having breakfast and an evening meal, this was before we read some of the reviews about the hotel! The food proved to be very basic and boring and ok if you liked chips and bread!! Im not usually a fussy eater but i had a hard time trying to find some food in this hotel to eat! Luckily we only went for three days and mangaed to eat out as often as we could! Overall the hotel itself was very nice but the food was not up to my standard!
Never Again
The hotel rooms were nice and clean. However the food was terrible, we had dead / cooked flies in our food every night. We joined a long queue to speak to the rep who told us that it had went down hill a year ago and that it had greatly improved. I therefore challenged the rep to dine in the restuarant that evening and she agreed afterwards that the food was not up to standard. I took photographs in order to help me complain when back in UK. Airtours kept fobing me off with "sorry" letters, it was only when I threatend to go to the media that they give me a part refund. I also agree with others that they had no time for the english, however in there favour they did move our party ( 2 rooms) into main hotel as my mother is a wheelchair user. We ate out alomost everynight as the thought of going in the restuarant with the bugs was very off putting.
Would never reccomend this hotel, not even to my worst enemy
We arrived at the California Gardens Hotel on Oct 3rd, I realise it was near end of season but this Hotel was the worst I have ever experienced, and ruined my break. The staff were very rude, they had no time for the British or Irish, and if you have children then forget about it, the rooms are very small and pokey, tiles coming away in the bathroom, the locks both on the bathroom door and balconey door were broken, we were put in a room that got no light at any time during the day. Most of the clients at the hotel were seniors even though the tour company advertised it as a family orientated hotel and even offered free child places. We were half board but we may as well have gone for self catering as the food was inedible, all food especially the breakfasts were cold and under cooked. The drink in the bar was at least 50c dearer than the other places in the area and the pool bar was closed, the evening entertainment was to be desired, the bar stopped serving at 12am and you were expected. The childrens play area consisted of a rusty swing, rusty see saw, rusty roundabout and broken trampoline. The mini Golf was flooded and couldn't be used.
Rude staff, undercooked food.
I went in October when the hotel was obviously running down as it was due to close for the season in a couple of weeks. The breakfast food was undercooked and cold. British travellers were put in the furthest block and we had a flight of stairs with no lift/ramp for buggies to get out to it. Entertainment was geared to the older Spanish visitors and hotel workers were very rude, unhelpful and inconsiderate – if you have small children be prepared to be stared at a lot by the workers, Spanish and German guests. If you are a non-smoker, don’t go there. All the rooms and buildings stink. The bar is very over priced. The restaurant is chaotic and there is a free-for all with fighting and barging over the food and table availability.
Had a great time
I visited the hotel from 26th September for a week with my 9yr old daughter and my boyfriend. We had read all previous reviews so we were very open minded about what to expect. We have very little to complain about, our room was spacious and clean, towels changed frequently. In fact most of the hotel was very clean (the toilets in reception sometimes left us hurrying to our room!) Food...Yes it was a little repeatative but we never went hungry, (beware of the bread rolls they could break your teeth they were very hard). On a whole the staff were friendly, but like another reviewer we found them to prefer any other nationalities apart from the British We all had a great time sitting around the pool nearly every day, except when we visited Port Adventura and the neighbouring water park. Considering what was paid for the holiday we believe it to have been excellent value for money.
We thought it was OK
Paid £145 for a week HB thro go2spain for a family of four. Room OK, clean and of reasonable size. Food a bit repetitive but plenty of choice maybe not aimed at British tastes but always pasta, chips, veg, fresh cooked meat or fish..bolognese every night is bolognese night Plenty of desserts but again mostly continental style. Fresh fruit at dinner but strangely not for breakfast. Hot beverage machines unreliable but plentiful so just have to hunt one down thats still got what u need. Drinks like all hotels expensive in the restaurant nad bar. Good pools ( lifeguard always around) and jacuzzis- indoor pool is 2.8 euros for an hour if it piddles down-Staff and most of guests are Spanish so dont plan your life around the hotel unless u r a chubby 4'6" 80 year old biddy who incidentally hunt in packs in the buffet!! Its metres from the shops, restaurants and bars, 5 minutes from the excellent child friendly beach ( lots of climbing apparatus and play areas) and about 6 euros in a taxi from Universal. Staff were mostly friendly, but not too keen to speak English although they undertsand pretty welll For what we paid we were well pleased. weather was unsettled to say the least but when the sun was out it was gr8 round the pools. So in conclusion, clean well maintained good location reasonable food quality and being a buffet u can eat as much as u like.
