Excellent value hotel. Booked sea view/balcony room and luckily got room 24! Superb! Room generally could have been a little cleaner, but important areas eg bathroom ok. Food adequate, varied, sufficient and hot, if a bit rushed at times. Swimming pool great. Staff... more

After many years of long distance holidays, I decided to travel to Jersey - less than an hour flying time away. I booked the flights and hotel independently and to be honest found this was the cheapest way. The Fort D'Avergne hotel on the outskirts of St Helier is... more

Don't expect luxury here...
We stayed here for one night. We were looking for a cheap room for the night and this hotel was fine for this purpose. The staff were helpful. We needed to park our car and the woman at reception told us honestly, that our car would not be safe parked on the street on a Friday night and gave us a paycard for the nearest car park, which was quite a trek with 2 large suitcases. There were a few teenagers drinking in a nearby bus shelter, but we didn't see anything untoward. The decor of the hotel was dated, but it had a welcoming feel. The room was basic, but very clean. The location was lovely, right next to the sea, but car parking is obviously a problem here. All in all, the hotel was fine for a night, but personally I would not like to spend a week's holiday here. It seemed to suit the mainly older clientele though.
Management response from Morvan 03 Feb 2009

We occupy one of the very best locations in St Helier, directly on the sea and sandy beach, and are pleased that you found the hotel to be very clean and that you felt that our sea front location was lovely. Please see notes that follow if you have concerns in respect of parking. We aim to provide excellent value and to be a friendly clean hotel that is professionally run. The hotel has seen considerable investment over the years; including superb indoor swimming pool facilities right overlooking the bay. We are well maintained as we form part of a family owned and run group of hotels that has an excellent reputation on the Island for quality and value for money. In 2009 we will have been owned and run by the same family for 30 years. Past information and perception on car parking has, we feel sure, considerably reduced our score on tripadvisor. We want to meet this criticism head-on for 2009 and must report that there are public car parks (including a multi storey) within walking distance, 5-10 mins, in the vicinity (Paycards must be used from 8am – 6pm Monday to Saturday). A car hire operator with a large depot is directly opposite the hotel. The car hire firm will be pleased to provide overnight parking but only if you hire a vehicle from them; so an easier car hire solution is available in respect of any parking issues. I hope that this clearer information will now provide greater comfort to guests choosing us in 2009. Contrary to the comments of this valued guest, the streets are safe in Jersey as we have very low crime rates on the Island. The advice given by us at reception was in respect of parking wardens and on-street parking and not in respect of personal safety or vehicle safety. Guests arriving by car usually drop-off their luggage at the hotel before using the public car parks in the vicinity. By way of note, our sister hotel, the Samares Coast, is on the same coast one mile to the east and does have a dedicated on site car park. Car parking apart, we believe that our reviews on tripadvisor are generally good. The hotel has seen further investment this winter to modernise its ‘look’ and I hope the above information will correct misconceptions in respect of the Fort d’Auvergne, caused by lack of correct information on car parking in the area. In respect of our own catering, we produce a freshly prepared menu each day. Our chef uses fresh local produce where possible, particularly vegetables, and we utilise many fair trade products at the hotel. We have a children’s evening dinner menu and an unsupervised playroom for young children. Our bar ‘La Promenade’ overlooks the sea and beach and has a flat screen TV available to guests. We do not hold non-resident functions. We are a clean well run medium size 65 bedroom hotel in a great sea front location close to the town and the port and are directly on the bus network. I trust that the above will be useful and we look forward to welcoming old and new guests in 2009. Thank you.

Fort d'Auvergne
Stayed for 5 nights in 3 different rooms. The first night in room 51 a ground floor room facing the road. Unfortunately the safety catch on the windows were not working so we did not have the windows open all night. The room smelt fusty and damp. As the hotel was full we spent the next night with a seaview but could not stay as it was booked for the rest of the stay. Room 49 was our final place-facing inwards and relatively quiet. We were half board. We paid £6.50 a night for evening meal and at that rate it was good value but certainly not haute cuisine. Food was often kept warm for too long and had dried out-particularly the fish. Cheese and biscuits was good! We realise it is a problem when catering for many on a shoestring. The reception staff were very friendly and most of the restaurant staff were quietly efficient - one or two spent too much time folding napkins etc instead of keeping the cups refilled-our own pot of coffee at breakfast would have been so much better. The pool was lovely-it seemed to be hardly used which is a shame.
Management response from ManagerJersey 03 Apr 2008

Thank you for your comments about our friendly reception service and our efficient restaurant team. These are appreciated. Our evening table d’hote menu is freshly prepared each day using fresh vegetables and locally sourced products where possible. Our teas and coffee are all Fairtrade. We do regard that our catering provides good quality and value. I am pleased that we were able to move you to one of our more popular sea view bedrooms for some of your stay at the hotel. Our indoor pool complex is kept solely for the use of resident guests and we do not run an external leisure club. This often receives positive comment from our return guests. Wonderful surprise
Prior to visiting this hotel, I read the reviews on this site and really didn't know what to expect. Firstly, I cannot understand why people faulted this hotel. I fully understand about the car park, but they should have checked first. My friend and I found that the hotel had a marvellous location facing the sea. The decor was very clean and pleasant. The staff was fabulous, the food was excellent. Good location for bus travel (outside hotel). I have travelled widely, and I would definitely choose this hotel again on my next visit to Jersey. Comfortable and right on the sea
I booked a long weekend at the Fort D'Auvergne, which I decided to book - despite it being only 2 star and getting average reviews -because of its seaside location. This location is certainly the making of the hotel and as far as I can see it's the only big hotel in St Helier in such a good position. The Pomme D'Or which comes out v highly in Trip Advisor overlooks the port, the bus station and a busy dual carriageway (not at all attractive), but this one overlooks the beach, the lido and the moonscape of rocks when the tide is out. The hotel is only 2 star and makes no pretension to being any better. Which is a shame in a way because with a little more attention to detail it could be a much better hotel. The room was spacious and the bed comforable but the facilities were basic (small TV, poor shower for example) and the red and gold swirly carpet which goes all through the public areas and into the bedrooms does not match anything. I used and enjoyed the small swimming pool but I would expect "luxury pool complex" to include a spa or something else in addition to the pool which it does not. However the staff were really friendly and helpful , especially in the restaurant. The breakfast was a very tasty English one with good sausages and bacon, but seemed to have gone out of its way to make sure it didn't provide anything which people might take with them for lunch so we had to make do with sliced bread and no rolls or croissants. However this restaurant has a great view of the sea. I went half board and the dinners were better than I had expected so long as they did not try too hard to be fashionable. Everything was fresh or home made. I think this hotel serves its clientele. Out of 100 odd diners I was one of only two people who ordered wine - were these all OAPs with no spare budget after paying for the hotel? It does what it does at the standard you would expect for the rating and price. It also has the best location in St Helier (but it does make a long walk into the town). If you want luxury you won't get it here - but it's homely and comfortable and friendly.
Nothing special
We made the mistake of booking this hotel for our honeymoon, and we stayed Sunday to Sunday. On arrival to the hotel, we had to take our luggage out of the car, take it into the hotel, and then go and park the car elsewhere. Whilst we were aware there was no parking, it's a pain, and something worthy of note. I can't remember our room number, but we did at least have a sea view, which made up for other poor aspects of the place. The room was a bit tatty - old fashioned sheets on bed, poor quality TV (too small, too high, poor quality picture), no bedside table (just had a wall light and a small cubby hole either side of the bed). The bathroom was a little dingey, and although cleaned well, just didn't seem that fresh. The shower had pretty poor water pressure. It looked like the tiles had been painted over. We informed the hotel staff that we were on honeymoon, and they were kind enough to leave a bottle of champagne on ice in the room for us, however they didn't offer us a room upgrade (they may not have had one - it was mid July). We did have an infestation of ants during the week in the corner of the room. Unfortunately all they did is stick down some ant powder and leave it at that. Whilst it solved the problem, it was pretty nasty, and they didn't offer us another room. It strikes me that the place is in need of some renovation and modernisation. The lift is a little shakey, and the floors are creakey in places, with far too many odd steps here and there whilst walking round corridors. We didn't sample the evening menu, there was only a limited menu and nothing appealed, so we ate out every night. I would second the recommendation for Nelson's Eye, just down the road. However, head right out of the hotel, cross over, and turn left up the next street, and you'll find the Roseville Bistro tucked away, which is absolutely excellent. Good prices, nice atmosphere, and service that was second to none. My wife dropped her knife and it was immediately replaced without even having to ask! We had the breakfast once at the hotel - it wasn't anything special, just standard english that wasn't particularly outstanding. The portugese restaurant over the road also had excellent quality food - worthy of a visit! The small pool and its associated facilities (changing rooms/shower) were excellent - we made good use of this. The bar was a good price, and the staff very friendly, but the entertainment wasn't quite to our taste. The hotel seems to attract a fair proportion of visitors who are older (50+), so not a great place for the young couple like ourselves. All in all, we wouldn't go back. I'd like to have seen what the better rooms were like, but I wouldn't pay to find out. The views are the only thing about this hotel that really makes it worth staying at.
Can't wait to go back
Just returned from a five day break at the Fort D'Auvergne. The hotel was ideally situated, right on the beach and approximately 15 minutes walk from the town and the new waterfront complex. The hotel was spotlessly clean. Staff were friendly, curteous and helpful at all times. The food was excellent, both at breakfast and evening meal. Other facilities included a lovely indoor pool and a pleasant sun terrace that overlooks the sea. Definately one to recommend to family and friends. Will certainly be paying a return visit.
A few glitches, but okay in the end
We stayed for three nights during the half-term holidays. I nooked using the hotel's own online service, which allowed me to book a room for a family of three with a sea view and a balcony. Next day I got a couple of frantic phone messages from the hotel management because they didn't actually have a balcony room available. So I settled for a (cheaper) sea-view room without a balcony. Next day they phoned again to say that a balcony room would be available on our second and third nights - would we like to move rooms? So no marks for the online booking system, but good customer service by the staff. It was raining as we arrived on the ferry, and as we cycled round to the hotel (it's a few minutes' ride from the ferry port), and it continued to rain all night. Our first room (room 1), only just qualified for a sea view and was cramped and fairly dark, with an en-suite shower room. It was also very hot so we turned the heating off and opened the windows. At which point water started splashing through one window from a leak in the guttering directly above. To avoid soaking our daughter in her bed we had to close the window, then lie awake half the night listening to heavy splashes as a roof's worth of water was lashed against the window. If we hadn't been moving to a different room the next day anyway, I would have demanded one. Room 24 was infinitely better - a proper bathroom (with its own window, hallelujah) , plenty of space and a generous balcony overlooking the rocks and the promenade below. The clouds finally dispersed and we enjoyed some spectacular sunset views from the balcony. I suspect no. 24 is the best room in the hotel - definitely one to ask for. Breakfast was the usual hotel fare - nothing wrong with it. We didn't try the dinners. There was "live" (allegedly) "entertainment" (allegedly) on two nights - one or two singers with backing tracks and a collection of golden oldies. The hotel bar was acceptable (when the singing stopped) with prices that seemed quite reasonable by English standards. The staff were generally polite and helpful. Clientele was a mixture of elderly couples and families with young children. It's about 15 minutes' walk into the centre of St Helier, and if you study the free map closely you can walk it entirely on quiet back streets. There are several restaurants very near the hotel - we tried Nelson's Eye Bistro which wasn't bad. On the last night we bought food in town and picnicked on the balcony. There is indeed no car parking - but hey, this is Jersey, it's so small it makes the Isle of Wight look like a continent. We left the car in Poole and brought our bikes. The hotel has bike racks in the terrace at the back, but they could really do with providng proper secure (and rain-proof!) bike storage. So all in all, if we'd just been there for one night I would have leaft with a very negative impression. Luckily, Room 24 with its views made up for a lot. The hotel is still quite expensive for what it is though - I'm not sure we'd go there again unless the price was right.
No car park!
We stayed at this hotel for a weekend, while we were in Jersey for a family wedding. We arrived in a hired car and were shocked to find that there was no car park at the hotel. Staff suggested a car park a few streets away but it was nearly always full (we only managed to park in it once over the weekend). Consequently we spent a lot of time driving around looking for a parking place (parking in Jersey is notoriously difficult) and walking back to the hotel. There was no mention on their website about a lack of parking facilities and I had taken it for granted that there would be (the hotel looked to be substantial enough to have a car park). I would never have booked it if I had known. Other than that, it was what you would expect from a 2 star hotel (don't expect tioletries in the bathroom - my daughters' room didn't even have soap). Staff were friendly. Breakfast is buffet style and perfectly acceptable but nothing special. Ask for a table with a sea view when arriving at the dining room - it makes up for a lot!
Alittle bit of everything!
My husband and twin 8 year olds went to Fort D'Auvergne on the 15 th July 2006. It was one of the best holidays that we have been on, and the hotel helped a lot! Initially when we went the temperature was through the roof. We checked into the bedroom only to find that the tv was not working and one of the windows would not stay open. when I went to speak to someone at reception I was told they would put in book and it would get fixed later in week!! However after stating I would like to see Manager the tv was sorted and we got a very good fan to use for the duration of our stay. The hotel is listed as 2 star which is a fair description of the bedrooms, however we were on a bed and breakfast basis and the service received in dining room was second to none, definately 4 star in there!! Quality of food was excellant. The manager of the breakfast area had quick pleasant reliable service staff who were so welcoming and efficient that it was an absolute joy to go in. The small swimming pool was spotless, and free towels were provided to use this. Our kids used every night on return from our travels. The small bar area was relaxing looking out to separate outdoor swiimming area and beach. We sat there with children each evening. We did not have evening meal but it was obviously very busy and other guests were heard to remark on the high service in the dining hall. One evening we returned as dinner was ending and the kids were looking for something to eat;the restaurant manager got the kids something to eat even though it was later. We did ask for bar snacks but this was not available, eating places nearby were quite pricey,so perhaps when we return we would have evening meal. There is a bus outside hotel which takes you to bus terminus to get to attractions and sights. We walked into town each morning which took 12 minutes.Opposite hotel is car hire which we used twice to hop around island highlight was La Mare Vineyards which was impressive but having the car made travelling around in the searing heat more tolerable! Lots of information leaflets available in hotel. One slight drawback for kids was there was a lot of 'more senior people' in the hotel, but this was more an observation than a concern. Hotel provided an excellant singer on one of the nights, which although geared towards a slightly older audience music wise our kids still loved! All in all we would return to Fort D'Auvergne although would try for sea-view room{not available due to high demand} also would prefer not to have bunk-beds{only 1 room has family room that also has 2 singles as well as double] This aside Jersey is fab and this hotel is a relaxing value for money place. Worth a mention Aqua Splash near cinema, and Ransoms garden centre boasting a first class restaurant that is open late on Friday evenings.Jersey Zoo was very pricey and looked in need of lick of paint and tidy up. Jersey war tunnels was a welcome relief in the searing heat and very informative, however after going round tunnels for some hours and then going to cafe area we requested bowl of chips for kids and was advised that this would not be possible unless we took with chicken nuggets!! I advised that it was strange after paying a family ticket to come there that limiting and refusing requests went against the ethos of the tunnels? Especially as all other places of interest had child options, that could be as simple as chips due to diminished eating habits in extreme heat.Small gripe but why should you pay £4.95 for food no-one will eat? Jersey - Fort D'Auvergne- we will be back!
Not so classy Jersey
Just returned from a weekend in St Helier's, Jersey. Was a bit disappointed with the place itself. Not as classy and sophisticated as I thought it would be. However the Fort D'auvergne hotel was a good place to stay if you wanted to try the island out for itself. It's listed as 2 star but I felt it was superior to that. The bedroom was basic but very clean and tidy. The rest of the hotel was comfortable, very clean, service was good. Breakfast served was good, I didn;t try the dinner but the menu looked to be excellent with good choices. There was a small pool which was very clean again and bright, although changing facilities were cramped if more than 4 people were in at the same time. Only 15 mins walk from the hotel to St Heliers, there were also a couple of good restaurants nearby and also hotels where you could use the bar and restaurants.
