This was our first long haul holiday and it was my job to pick the country and resort.
I went for Mauritius and Le Preskil Beach Resort and what a result. The country was all I had hoped for and the hotel was paradise it's self.
We had a cottage and it had all modcons we wanted, sat TV, kettle, even had slippers for you to wear when you came in from the white coral sandy beach.
Now the food was not to our liking, a bit spicy and not much choice for the British taste
but don't let that put you off this is our opinion.
A local bus ride to the town is 10rupees well worth it. There is a market on a Monday so pick up all you gifts there and don't forget to haggle.
A local supermarket is just down the road if you need it. Internet access and a chemist are available there.
There is more to tell about Mauritius and the resort but go and find out yourself, it will be well worth it.

Firstly, apologies if this appears to be an incoherent ramble. It appears that on a preview of this review, carriage returns are not recognised !! Anyway, onto the review........
It is difficult to describe the warm glow you get when you know you have made a good decision. It makes you smile both inwardly and on the outside. It makes you tingle, and, if I am honest, a little smug. Allow me to elaborate.....
I was given one task, and one task only for our recent wedding. Book the honeymoon. Make it good, or it will be the shortest wedding in history. Obviously, I was tempted with a "Sun Super Saver" holiday to Clacton for a little while, but eventually narrowed it down to Mauritius. I spent a good while reading various websites, looking at different resorts, and speaking to a few travel agents. Different resorts were mentioned by different agencies, each pushing their own particular favourites.
One specific agency stuck in my mind. That agency was toescapeto. The reason that they had made such an impression was that they listened. They asked me what I wanted from a holiday, then sat back and LISTENED! After many lengthy phone calls, and a lot of late nights tweaking and tuning of requirements for me, it was time for a leap of faith. I booked Le Preskil Beach Resort, South East Mauritius, and counted the days.
A comedian once did a 10 minute stand up routine about the perils of booking package holidays.....sitting on the coach praying that the hotel you are arriving at is not yours, and pointing and sniggering at the people that get off at the local equivalent of Fawlty Towers. I felt exactly the same trepidation when I arrived in Mauritius. The journey from the airport to the resort is 15 minutes by taxi, and whilst it may be indicative of the native living of the island, it wasn't exactly the peace and tranquillity I had hoped for. I needn't have worried.
Suddenly, we were making a turn off the road and confronted by a security barrier manned by guards donning crisp white uniforms and enormous smiles. Waiting beyond these gates was the sort of welcome I felt should have been reserved for royalty. After taking our bags, we were led along a picturesque pathway laden with flowers and exotic birds, to be greeted with cold towels and a refreshing drink at the creole style reception area. Once the paperwork was complete, we were shown to our room.
The room we had chosen was a Superior Cottage. This basically comprised of a house shaped building that was home to 3 self contained rooms, each of a more than comfortable size for 2 people. The room itself was clean and very well presented, with tiled floors, a queen sized bed, TV, mini-bar, air conditioning, and a chaise lounge type seat at the bottom of the bed. The bathroom was home to a large round bath big enough for two to share (it was my HONEYMOON, remember ;) ), and all the fittings were to a high standard. The foot of the bed faced a wall made completely from glass, containing two patio doors that led onto the patio area and beach.
The view from these doors was, quite simply, breathtaking. The ocean lay possibly 8-10 metres away at most, and was stunningly turquoise, lapping gently onto the beach. Between the cottage and the ocean lay a blindingly white coral beach. As we were at the furthest end of the resort, there were a couple of palm trees dotted on the beach, and 6 reclining chairs for our use. It was at this moment I made the conscious decision to quit my job, become a scuba instructor and move here for good.
On further investigation, we found that the ocean was, in fact, a natural lagoon caused by the coral reef on the horizon. This meant that you could walk a great distance out into the water without it ever getting too deep. There were pockets that were deeper than others, which were excellent for snorkelling, but in general it was not deep at all.
If it was water sport action you were after, there was plenty of scope for this in the main part of the resort. Le Preskil offered many different types of activities such as canoeing, pedaloes, water skiing, wind surfing, glass bottomed boats, and snorkelling, which were all free of charge. The only water based activities that were chargeable were Scuba Diving (with a registered diving company), catamaran trips, or deep sea fishing expeditions. The main resort offered other activities such as volleyball, tennis, table tennis, a health club, a gym, 2 swimming pools and a children’s club.
We sampled the scuba diving on Boxing Day, and with my wife having an inherent fear of scuba diving after a particularly nasty experience in Turkey, we were naturally apprehensive. The instructors were patient, friendly and understanding right from the start. They took us into one of the pools so that we could acclimatise to the equipment before we went out to "Blue Bay", about 10 minutes by speedboat.
Blue Bay. It is how it sounds. Imagine you have run a bath in a giant tub that is 20 feet deep. Thats how it felt. Warm, and perfectly clear. And 20 foot deep, obviously. We spend about 45 minutes down, swimming around with an instructor pointing out things of interest, and guiding us through the route. It was here that I saw my first turtle, gently meandering through the water. That alone made the money (approx. £18) worthwhile.
Whilst on the subject of money, although we were all-inclusive, I could see that it could be expensive to stay there. As a brief example, we ordered a bottle of house red wine with our meal. It was covered as part of the all-inclusive, but the bill was marked out with £12 for the wine, which would probably cost around £2 at the local supermarket. And it was nasty !
The only restriction on the all-inclusive package was that lunch had to be taken in a specific restaurant from a specific menu. In reality, this was not a problem at all as the food was FANTASTIC !
Breakfast : Fruits,
Fruit Juices,
Tea,
Coffee,
10 different cereals,
Eggs,
Bacon,
Sausage,
Beans,
Potato,
Toast,
Pancakes with multiple choices on toppings.
Lunch : Various foods, including
Steak & Chips,
Pizza,
Toasted Sandwiches.
Dinner : Themed buffet nights, such as
Creole,
Asian,
Indian,
Caribbean.
Truthfully, the food was some of the best I have ever tasted with a massive, MASSIVE choice. Always delicately flavoured, it was never overpowering or spicy and the sweets were on a grand scale (3 ft high toffee and custard profiterole tower, for instance).
The weather was very warm, but never too hot. It rained once in the day during the whole time we were there, about 5 minutes on Christmas Day. Most people did not even bother to remove themselves from the comfortable beach loungers !! The beach itself was a coral beach which gave it a couple of immediate benefits. Firstly, it did not suffer from the "feet of fire" syndrome, where your feet burst into flames after walking on the sand for a couple of seconds. Secondly, the sand did not get blown everywhere by the breeze when you were applying your sun cream.
I understand that beach sellers are a problem in most resorts around the world now. However, there are 24hr security patrols on the resort to counter this. Not once did I feel that that were imposing on my relaxation, and it did in fact make me feel more comfortable in leaving the cottage patio doors unlocked if we were on the beach.
The resort staff were incredibly friendly, with nothing being too much trouble for them. Even after nearly 2 weeks, the girl who welcomed us into the resort on our arrival still greeted us with a huge smile and knew our names. Small touches like that go a long way to making a holiday feel special.
Although I have rambled for over 1000 words, I still feel like I am bursting to tell you more about this gem. The trouble is, in black and white, it doesn't portray the way it made us feel when we were there. Hopefully, I can sum it up in this one final sentence.
Apparently, a gentle breeze permanently blows in the South East region of Mauritius. I just hope that every time I feel a summer breeze, it carries me back to Le Preskil.
