Unexceptional
We were accommodated here for 3 nights by the Essex University Summer School because Wivenhoe House (see other reviews) was full. We had a double room in the newer part of the hotel which was generally OK except that the double bed mattress was too soft and the pillows were cheap, non-feather ones. The bathroom was very ordinary with shelving toiletries etc. over the loo rather than over the sink. There was considerable street noise although the secondary double-glazing was reasonably effective in reducing it, except that it also cut out... more
All style no substance and very over priced.
We booked this hotel for a leisure trip and went for the more expensive executive room hoping for a bit of luxury, it was quite expensive at £120 a night so we were expecting something a little special. The hotel is in an excellent location, a nice easy walk to the town centre but not so close that it's noisy. The executive rooms were a bit of a disapointment and extremely overpriced. We saw 2 of the rooms as we were originally given a twin and had booked a double so they moved us. Both rooms were very small, though they were... more
Good Business Hotel, Nice Bar and food
Stayed for one night on business, and after a recent bad experience at the Red Lion in Colchester I was not looking forward to a similar stay here. However upon arrival I was plesently suprised, the hotel is well appointed and comfortable, bedroom was large welcoming with Tea/Coffe Buscuits and bottled water, TV movies, internet and games available etc There were some minor niggles - the TV remote didn't work and the Bathroom was a little tired and the toilet didnt flush too well but it was adequate The hotel is a charming old... more
Charming, Unique, Friendly
The Rose and Crown is definitely a unique place to stay in Colchester. It has a very long history, which only adds to its charm. We stayed in the newer part of the hotel and our room was pleasant. It was at the end of the newer part, so the walk to and from was long and winding and not easy with our luggage. I would suggest requesting a room that is not at the far end. Unfortunately, one night the lock mechanism to our room would not unlock. The hotel staff was very accomodating under the pressure and did their very best to make the... more
Two weddings and little sleep
We spent two nights in that hotel (Friday and Saturday). Since we stayed in the old part of the hotel, there was no air condition and due to the high temperatures we would have liked to sleep with the windows open. But as there were two weddings, guests gathered outside our window for a talk and a smoke. So there was constant noise (partly of highly intoxicated people) and cigarette smoke till the early hours of the morning. You could also hear music and the speeches from the wedding reception. Consequently sleep was not possible.<br... more
OK BUT NEEDED A LITTLE TLC
I stayed here for work one night last week. The receptionist was very friendly and assisted me whilst another guest was fussing about. My room no. 209 had twin beds and was exceedingly warm due to the good weather but when opening the sash windows a lot of noise from the road outside came in. I then went into the bathroom which left a lot to be desired. TIles loose and missing, old soap and shampoo left in the shower, hole in the flooring, crack in the sink, side of bath coming away. I stuck with the room as I was already late for an... more
Nothing to recommend
Having read a tripadvisor review in which mention was made of the noise from a nearby level crossing was noted, I doubted whether to book this hotel or not. I regret to say that I did book a room for one night and spent the next day at a friend's wedding angry and exhausted, having failed to sleep all of the one and only night I spent at the Rose and Crown. My booking clarified that I sought a quiet room. Unfortunately, the first room was located by a busy corridor ( the noise of chatter from outside the room could be heard clearly) and... more
Pleasant but nothing fancy
Booked two nights at the Rose and Crown for a wedding in a local village. The hotel is a popular local wedding venue too. Very nice building (reputably the oldest coaching Inn in England). Nice bar with good beer and good breakfast. Paid £80 a night but opted to upgrade to a superior for an extra £15 a night. Didn't see the regular rooms (or the four posters) but had what I would describe as a standard clean & clinical Motel room - imagine the aircon was what got it the superior label. Very large bathroom with a wet room shower which... more
Warm and friendly.
We really enjoyed our weekend stay at the Best Western Rose and Crown. The building itself is delightfully old and interesting. Our room was very comfortable and quaint with four poster, though it was a shame the four poster we were lucky to have, was not dressed with the usual drapes. The food was very good with a choice of bar meals or Restaurant, we stayed in the bar because we were so cosy infront of a large log fire, wonderful! The drinks were reasonable and the staff all worked extremly hard, giving a quick and friendly service, even... more
Great Fusion restaurant
This hotel sounds very unpromising, but you could be pleasantly surprised for the money. The building is a very old Tudor oak framed building in the centre of town. The only downside is that it is close to a level crossing and there is some rumble from the trains early in the morning. However, some of the rooms are very spacious and mine had a four poster bed. The restaurant is excellent, with a chef who cooks a 'fusion' of Indian and french cuisine which is a delicious combination. Even the ubiquitous Eastern European waiting staff... more
