Utter Rubbish
I stayed in the bridal suite because all hotel rooms were full, paid a crazy price for it, and i must say, i was disgusted. Utter rubbish hotel, very old and squeeky, door locks are almost falling apart, couldnt sleep in the morning because of all the people walking and floors squeeking. Elevator was horrible, staff were rubbish, toilet was rubbish with no water pressure at all, and no shower. They put in a jacuzzi which barely works and is held in one peice by masking tape!! very very disappointed, definitely the worst, dirtiest, disgusting... more
Absolutely fantastic-A Perfect Wedding Day!
We got married at the astor, and everything was perfect. The astor suite was beautiful for the ceremony and the reception, the food was fantastic (both 3 course meal and evening buffet), and the rooms were lovely! The bridal suite is absolutely gorgeous and myself and my bridal party very much enjoyed getting ready there, and staying there! The day ran so smoothly, and that was with thanks to the wonderful team of staff who were there for us all day and did a really great job. They were so helpful and available to help but not at al... more
AVOID AVOID!! worst night of my life.
This hotel was the worst hotel I have ever stayed in, in my life. After reading the website that quotes it as 'luxury' we took a chance and booked it over the phone. When we got there I was shocked at the state of it, it's in depserate need of reburbishment, it has NOT been recently refurbished as it quotes. The first room we were given smelt of stale smoke, had a smashed window, and an ancient avacado bathroom suite with brown tiles, not what you expect for a refurbished room. We quickly complained and were moved to a different... more
Great Service
We had our wedding ceremony and reception at the Astor and stayed there for two nights prior to departing on our honeymoon. I have read with interest the previous reviews of this hotel and I must disagree. The wedding suite that we stayed in was superb and none of our guests had any complaints at all with their rooms (we had a total of 10 rooms). I must make special mention to the staff who were for more friendly and attentive than many we have encountered in British hotels. There was eveidence of refurbishment work going on... more
Just a rip off
This is a hotel that's obviously on its last legs but still trying to squeeze money out of it. The elevator barely made its way up, the lights in the hall were so dim it saved you from having to look at the shabby carpet. Our room was rather small and certainly cold, the bathroom nice and big, but the water pressure too low to take a shower. We stayed just one night, paid a fortune and will never stay there again.
Great service
Didn't stay overnight at the hotel though it is in an excellent location - was very pleased with the meal booked at very short notice for 15 people - lovely food, our chief guest had a 21st birthday and the hotel staff made her day. Free cocktail as well! Would recommend, will certainly consider another booking on a future visit to Plymouth.
Not quite shabby, not quite chic
This was a 'surprisingly nice' hotel - better than its one star suggests. The antique bed was a nice touch - a welcome relief from those buried under piles of suede cushions with no space to put them! In many ways 'showing her age', but not dirty or too tired. The hotel's ambiguous public statements about parking boils down to the fact that they have only three spaces, and take a shine to some of their visitors (I don't know why they liked us!) Food was good: mushroom stroganoff was cooked by someone who knows that not all... more
OK but needs attention
Location The Astor's best point. 30 seconds walk from the Hoe and around 10 mins from the Barbican. Taxi recommended if you are arriving by train with luggage. The hotel Attractive building in quiet Victorian terrace. Unfortunately it has seen better days and suffers from chipped wallpaper, worn carpets etc plus dreadful replacement windows. A refurbishment programme is in progress: fingers crossed this refreshes the decor without losing the period features. Rooms Stayed in a single & saw two other singles. All... more
