We stayed at this hotel for the first time in September when we visited Plymouth for a school reunion. I don't normally write reviews but was so impressed by the service at the Duke of Cornwall that I wanted to. It's a very old, grand building and is undergoing some... more

lovely hotel
The hotel was lovely, the staff were friendly and the food was exquisite. The only bad thing is that it rained constantly but the hotel is hardly to blame for that. hehe There are some nice images on: http://www.thedukeofcornwallhotel.com/
Wonderful Wedding Beautiful Building
My Husband and I were married at the Duke of Cornwall on Saturday 12th July 2008. This beautiful hotel has weddings and functions nearly every weekend it's a shame more of the people using it don't put their reviews on here. Melanie Williams our wedding contact was brilliant, she was always bright, cheerful and very helpful. We saw many different types of rooms in order to want to suggest our guests staying and all rooms we saw were of a very good standard, we were even able to pick our room for our wedding eve. Our Wedding was held in the restaurant which was amazing, a beautiful round room with marble pillars and a dome ceiling with a fantastic chandelier in the center. We had a pianist playing as our guests arrived with a choice of music we chose. The flowers they supplied (all included in the price of the room) were lovely and moved to the Ballroom afterwards. The meal was amazing there was abundant amounts! It was served quickly and efficiently you were aware of staff around but they certainly weren't in the way they were all polite and professional. Apart from a couple of small hitches (what wedding doesn't have those!) it was fantastic and just as we had requested. Our four poster room, was huge and very comfortable we had champagne, and flowers, the bathroom was clean. There was lots of room to hang clothes too. Plenty of our guests stayed in varying different rooms and we did not have a complaint from any of them. This is a beautiful building with a wonderful history and lots of character there is no other building like it in Plymouth, it is also great as a central location so close to the Hoe and the city center. We are more than glad we picked the Duke for our wedding day the photos look amazing.
OK for a short break
The building itself is extremely impressive, but it does need a bit of a refurbishment inside. The room was fine, with a nice view. Unfortunately the bathroom was exceptionally small without even a proper shower attachment over the bath which I thought was a definite negative. I also thought the wi-fi access a bit of a rip-off. The dining room was impressive, and the food great, although at 50 it was a bit off putting to feel like I was the youngest person there. Breakfast was good. Would think about staying here again, but the bathroom did put me off....
Give it a miss
Don't be deceived by the outsides: this is a hotel that has seen much better days. This hotel badly needs refurbishment. It isn't in the same league as a decent hotel such as a Marriott or Hilton, as you might expect, but Holiday Inn Express are so much better (and cheaper). I would even prefer to stay in the Plymouth Travel Lodge! Breakfast was fine and most of the staff were very nice. But while we were prepared to put up with the shabby, past its best decor, our trip was completely spoiled by a light in the bathroom falling off the ceiling and shattering all over the carpet. Luckily after we had gone to bed. But the light was definitely not safety glass. It could have seriously injured anyone who had been in there at the time (as my children had been two hours before). I was told by a member of staff that other rooms had these dangerous lights as well. The attitude of the hotel was to offer a bit of a discount and get us out the door as fast as possible. I asked them to contact us to tell us what they intended to do to right the situation and we're still waiting to hear - four months later. And when I say 'right' I don't mean compensation for us, I mean an action plan to make things safer for future guests. Do you really want to stay in a hotel with this sort of attitude to health and safety? I only hope that they have taken adequate remedial action since our stay. The only people who can think this place is good are those that really don't know much about hotels. This hotel needs a refurbishment, a different attitude and a new management team and then maybe it will be worth staying in. When you consider that you can stay in a vastly better hotel for the same sort of rate that this place charges... spend your pounds more wisely.
Another good stay at the Duke
This was our fifth visit to the Duke of Cornwall. We are attracted by it's central position, within easy walk of all of Plymouth's attractions, and its parking facilities. The rooms are in need of updating, at least ours was, but it was very busy on this weekend with a wedding party booked in. We were unable to have the room of our choice, but we still had a reasonable view. The restuarant is first class. I casnnot reccomend it highly enough, and the team are are so pleasant, even during a busy breakfast period. Will definoitrly return.
Try Somewhere Else
This hotel looks very good from the outside and the lobby area and bar are fine, with a certain amount of olde worlde charm. I have stayed two or three times and have never had a satisfactory room - either too small or with two single beds instead of a double. The decor seems old and faded though this could be a "period" restoration and the bathrooms seem to come in all sorts of strange colours and configurations - shower without bath, bath with only hand-held shower. The lift is tiny and asthmatic and the car park is very small - check in early and leave your car if you do stay here. I have only had the breakfast here which was very nice and a good start to the day. I paid GBP65 per night on a corporate rate and thought that was too expensive and now stay in a Travel Inn instead and save another tenner or so. This hotel is architecturally interesting enough that it could be a really cool place if someone was prepared to put the effort in to renovate it properly.
Smart 3-star hotel in good city location
Good all-round tourist hotel, smart elegance of yesteryear. Restaurant serves good food (1 AA rosette) but is somewhat gloomy in colour. Rooms fine, though try to get one of the higher floors which are quieter. (If thinking of coming to Plymouth as part of a holiday however - DON'T - dreadful place - I only stayed here because of a conference).
