Portland Hotel

If you are looking for a place to crash, don't care much about decor or amenities, and are willing to pay 80 pounds a night for something pretty basic, this is the place for you. On the positive side, the staff were pleasant and helpful, and the breakfast was fine. Another plus is that the hotel is right across the street from beautiful Pavillion Park . I admit it's a while since I stayed at this hotel, but having read the relatively poor reviews posted here I thought I should add something, as the picture given does not really conform to my experience. True, the decor when we were there was dated, but not absurdly so. I found the room clean and my shower certainly worked, as did the heating (it was November). In total, there were eleven in our party, in a total of 6 rooms. Without exception, the rooms were drab and gloomy. In their favour, I will say the sheets were clean but the bedspreads, which were popular in the 50's, were dirty and stained. One couple were placed in a room where the proprietor admitted he knew there was a problem with the shower, resulting in 3 visits from him whilst the lady was in the shower, to rectify the situation and a near scalding in the meantime. This place doesn't know the meaning of customer service. Luckily we only stayed for Mothers day lunch, never again. I've seen better decor in a working mans club.The carpets were filthy and the food was poor and small in quantity, it could have been mistaken for a cheap microwaved meal. We booked a double room for two nights. The guy on reception was fairly pleasant, although the hotel didnt smell too nice and the place is well overdue redecoration and new furniture. Hotel car parking is limited and we had to park on the street. When we saw our room we were both speechless. The room was drab, the carpet filthy, and the only piece of furniture was a filthy cheap old dresser with faded peeling laminate.
