Overpriced for very shabby hotel
The hotel needs closing down and refurbishing immediately. It is disgraceful that they can charge a 3-4* rate on a 2* hotel. At least 4 of the rooms have curtains about to fall from the poles and cannot work out how the shredded lining is still managing to stay with the curtains. There are only 5 armchairs in the bar area to accommodate 31 rooms and they are either full of dust or the arms have foam oozing out of them (perhaps the resident cat ought to be kept out of bounds). We booked 4 rooms and were expecting to eat in the restuarant... more
May have seen better days, but ...
We stayed 4 nights for a conference in a double, booked well in advance. The first room offered was in the basement, damp and smelly. The second was equally small and stuffy smelling, but on the 2nd floor. Carpet has seen no cleaning for ages. Blanket was ancient, had stains and a hole (from cigarette in a 'no smoking room'). We asked for a new one, which never came. Found a cleaned one in the cupboard, which also had a huge stain and a hole. Shower curtain was moldy. Breakfast on day 1 was not forthcoming for 30 mins (hotel fully... more
Nice staff, shame about the hotel!
Following a recent weekend overnight stay in April 06 at The Rodney, I wish now I had read the previous reviews before staying. As a former resident of Bristol, I had wrongly assumed that any hotel in Clifton would be to a decent standard, no matter how many stars it had. The hotel did have character but a room stinking of damp, signs of water ingress to the walls, poor & aging decoration & black mould to the bath are not my idea of pleasent characteristics! Unless I wanted to visit my old student accomodation of course! There is also a... more
Average Hotel in need of updating
Stayed for one night in February, in a room on the first floor. Service was good with a very pleasant and helpful group of staff members. Room was acceptable although a little on the warm side despite the radiators being off. Only real downside was that, in both the room (including bathroom) and common parts, the feel of the hotel was shabby and in need of serious updating. The location of the hotel affects the price, but for the money I would hope for an interior that matches the service.
Never again!!!!!!
I agree with the majority on this one. I stayed at the Rodney hotel on 18th January '06 and my word - it is not an experience I care to revist anytime ever! It was old, smelt disgusting on the stair wells, a mixutre of old smoke and damp. I too was in one of the attic rooms which was a little precarious to get to with a slightly windind carpeted staircase which I thought I was going to trip on. My TV had terrible reception, it was cold as the radiator needed bleeding, Thankfully I was given a fan heater for my troubles. The batchroom... more
Excellent value for money, very pleasant stay
Old property with a lot of character and features, my room was very spacious and restaurant and Breakfast food was excellent. Staff is very polite and efficient. I would recommend this hotel to my friends.
Memorable for all the wrong reasons
Our room - right up in the attic (crampons needed) - was small, very hot and stuffy (the window was tiny) and had carpet in the bathroom. There were also a lot of dubious stains on the bedspread and chair. We asked for a fan. When one was produced it was filthy. We changed rooms but the room was the same but with a bigger window. Had we had more time and not had several friends staying in the hotel we would have left. Breakfast wasn't too bad and the late night barman/receptionist helpful. I regret not staying n the Swallow.
One night is too much
We stayed in the Rodney Hotel in August 2005, and we agree 100% with the previous review that the overall experience was such that we would not return to this hotel. It does have that 'old' feel to it and we dont mind 'Old' as in historic but yes, the decor was old, cracked and peeling to such a degree that I did wonder if I would wake up one morning with part of the ceiling on our bed! The double room we had was very small and storage space was minimal. The shower was over the bath and the bath creaked as one stood and showered in... more
One night is enough
We stayed in the Rodney Hotel in November 2004, and although there are some efforts to keep the guests happy (fresh fruit and various teas in the guest rooms), the overall experience was such that we would not return to this hotel. It is a Georgian terrace which has an 'old' feel to it every aspect ('old' smell, old decor, bleached out colours, creaky floors). The stairs and windows showed some of the grandeur that this building must have had in the 18th century. The room we had was very small, although not unusually small for a 2**... more
